Was there any significant attempt or production of diesel based engines for motorcycles?

Doesn’t make sense for a motorcycle, especially one that has to be light and compact. The big advantage of diesel engines is efficiency, which isn’t a priority in motocross. To get a diesel to have power and be compact, you‘d need a turbo, which would make it very complex and heavy.

I figured but wasn't sure, so thought I would ask. Would be a neat idea, but definitely not practical.

Fair enough! There’s a Wikipedia article on diesel motorcycle and there’s a diesel dirt bike for the military. I don’t know what‘s the benefit there, but maybe they wanted it to be able to use the same fuel as all the other equipment.

Isn’t a old school Ford diesel and a 2 stroke engine kinda similar?

4T diesel. You normally need a compressor to run a 2T diesel.

I just checked. It‘s called Hayes Diversified Technologies M1030M1. It’s a modified KLR650 and some can run on multiple fuels, which is a big advantage in the field.

No sir! I appreciate the apology but its not needed, I was watching this video and It made me wonder if someone had ever tried to make a dirt bike with it. Imagine a motocross bike rolling coal :D

Older Detroits were 2 strokes. They sound a bit different. With the old 6V71 you had to slam the door on your hand so you’d be mad when you got in them. They were like a 125. Had to be WFO to go anywhere.

In a similar vane, I think a few of the biggg transport ships are technically two stroke diesels.

There could be a two stroke diesel bringing your two stroke YZ over from Japan 🤣

The really big ships have turbocharged twostroke diesel engines. Their rpms are so low that they can drive the propeller directly which make them super efficient.

I used to work on large two stroke opposed piston diesels. 5,000cfm blowers. They were generators on US Navy ships. Fairbanks Morse 38D 8 1/8.

Kawasaki make a diesel bike, for military applications. How about a novelty race at A1 for these? See the pro's jumping these would be a treat!
