Pulp was discussing this, thoughts on this? Personally think it would be a good way to keep things a little more interesting towards the end of the season for the 450's. I don't think it would be necessary for the lites.

Bad idea in my opinion , and there is no lites class.

I kinda like the idea. SX is stale... same old intro, same old track, same old format

It punishes guys like Dungey... The way things are right now 17 thrird place finishes will get you the title...

Having a racer clinch the SX series with 4 races to go really shits on Felds' bottom line, so I can see why they would be considering it.

It would be interesting for the 250 class. 6 West rounds and 6 East rounds, top 18 in points qualify towards the chase which is a 5 round shootout for the championship. The rest of the field get to qualify and the top 4 spots fill in the rest of the gates and are spoilers for people who were injured and/or doing selected rounds.

Anybody ever win the supercross or outdoor title without winning a main or overall?

Is this a sport or dancing with the stars? Why not just get rid of points all together and get a panel of celebrity judges to score them on style .

Well it didn't work for Nascar so by all means let's try it in SX.

I am re-posting my comment from another thread on how to make SX racing infinitely better....

It's not complicated at all. No need for a "chase" format.

****

I think we can all agree that the current SX format has gotten a bit stale. They have made some tweaks that have improved it. Specifically bringing back the semis so we get more racing. That has been a good addition.

We need to rethink the traditional format and do something different. We need more action. More meaningful racing. We need to see more passes. More privateers starting up front and more stars battling through the pack.

All you need to do is these two things.....

1. Invert the start order for main events. Last qualifier gets first gate pick and so on.

I know what you are saying, this will make people sandbag in the qualifiers. See item number two. Item two is important for item one to work.

2. Give out some championship points in the qualifiers as well as for mains. This will eliminate sandbagging completely. Make the points meaningful and you will see epic qualifiers. Everyone knows how important points are and this will insure no one sandbags. Star riders will race to win the qualifiers just as they do now.

If these two things were implemented then the racing would drastically improve. There is nothing better then seeing a star rider come through the pack. We want to see passes and racing, not follow the leader. The start has become too important with the current format.

Inverting the main event start order would make it so privateers start up front more and the star riders might start in the back a bit more. The cream will always rises to the top. We just might be able to see more passes. Everyone always hopes one of the stars gets a bad start so we can see them come through the pack. Why? Because we want to see them skillfully and relentlessly race to the front.

**** /end

I would also like to add that having a few more privateers start up front increases exposure for more sponsors. We need more riders to get exposure and thus more potential sponsors would get some meaningful exposure.

The fast riders will move their way through the pack (cream rises to the top). The fans will get more exiting racing.

If this format was implemented for one year you would wonder how we ever did it differently. It would be awesome. Period.

Change the format so the main event has the top 10 250 guys and the top 10 450 guys. Put the fastest 20 guys at the event on the line at the same time. Get rid of the east/west divisions. Everyone goes 17 rounds.

So some want to get rid of lappers, while others want them to go first, ok. Instead of 'full gates' just make it percentage of fastest rider to get in, that way no 'slow pokes'. Also, getting lapped means get off the track, you're going too slow. Ride anything with 2 wheels too.

I'm against it, the racing has always been good no matter who was Champion and when they clinched.

and what about the Sport and all the records how do they reset all that ?

Same as the NFL records when they went from 12 to 14 to 16 games. Nobody cared.

Can't tell if you're serious or not? JS7, Dung, Barcia, DM18, TC41, Seeley, Pieck, CR22, Roczen, Tomac. Thats 10 guys who are capable of winning IMHO. Thats almost 45% of the gate for the main. I doubt half of the field has a shot of winning in napcar.

|

8/11/2015 6:30 PM

What if they just increased the points for the last 5 rounds? That would be cool.

|

8/11/2015 6:37 PM

Stupid idea , why handicap the guys that have their shit together ?

|

8/11/2015 6:43 PM

This topic was nearly burned to the ground during the dreary days of sx last year. I'm for the change and I think it would change things in ways that people don't expect.

I think it would apply pressure to everyone at the end of the season. Most guys burn out like a bottle rocket by round 4.

In other sports you always see guys rise to the occasion in the playoffs that were quiet all year. Someone like Canard is built for that stuff.

I'm not for the chase format at all. I think the think the thing to do is to have a championship within a championship. Meaning, have a $250,000 prize for the rider who scores the most points in the last four races of the SX season. I would do this only for the 450 class.

Im just throwing that dollar amount out there but it would have to be enough money to motivate the top payed riders.

More realistically it would be $250. Two hundred fifty dollars. blink

The start which is about 3 seconds is easily 90% of importance of a 15 minute main event. This is pathetic. I grew up racing like this and I was an exceptional starter so it always benefited me. Now having been retired for a number of years and just a pure fan I can tell you that as a fan this totally sucks. I have attended several SX races in person and I can say I left early for many of them because the main events just went stale after 5 minutes. I would rather beat the traffic...

We need racing... we need passing. Some how you have to make the first 75 feet of the race less important.

The least disruptive and most fair way to do this is what I posted above. We don't need a chase. We don't need to combine 250 with 450. We need better racing and better racing comes from guys coming through the pack.

Give championship points in qualifiers and invert the gate picks for mains.

It's almost too easy.....

Dungey won 10 mains this year.
Why do you guys think he's not motivated?

Yea I hear you. Even if they gave away a truck like Toyota did for the rider with the most holeshots in select races during the 2013 season. They could instead give away a truck for the riders who score the most points in the last 4 races. I do believe it would have to be more than a truck for the top guys to want to go all out for the last 4 races.

I never said he isn't motivated... I said anyone can win the title in supercross with 17 third place finishes in almost
every year...

I figure a Veteran like Dungey May get $100,000 bonus for every win... Hell yeah, Dungey is motivated... Who wouldn't be...
