In my opinion, the 1989-1990 seasons was one biggest endings of an era - Broc Glover, George Holland, Ricky Johnson, Johnny O'Mara, M Dymond, and Ron Lechien were gone. Going into the 1989 season these riders were racing for wins - some dominating.


Are we witnessing this again? Could Reed, RV and Stew be gone 2015?

Some or all of those 3 might still be around next year but we are definitely starting to see a change of the guard.

It's always been a young mans sport, and there is a lot of fast young riders out there right now.

I believe we are watching the slow progression of the changing of the guard as it were. I don't think either Stew or Reed will retire this/next year (RV who knows) but it's easy to see that in just a few years, RD will be the elder statesmen of the series and guys like Tomac, Barcia, Canard, Roczen, Cianciarulo, Webb, Martin, and a whole cast of others will be scrapping it out for motos and championships. That being said, I think Dungey has the most staying power of the "older" riders who are winning (as in not Tomac or Roczen) right now. His smooth, effortless style combined with his excellent fitness will allow him to continue to be fast for a while and will preserve his body, maybe even into his 30s if he's lucky.

It's kind of sad watching guys who I've grown up idolizing (Stewart, Reed to some extent, RC, etc.) begin to age out of this sport and move on; I feel like part of what made me love motocross is about to vanish. I do think, however, that the level of competition is at an all-time high right now. I can't think of another time when there were this many guys who were currently winning or have the potential to win (in the case of the younger guys who will be moving up soon). I mean I'm not really that old, but to me it seems that the riding has been taken to another level in the last 10 years, and that a lot of guys have stepped up to the plate when it comes to speed. So in a way I guess I'm kinda excited in a way for what the racing will look like in the near future.

I'm hoping for this. At least podium regularly. Tomac, Dungey and Roczen will be difficult to beat regularly.

Agreed...unfortunately.

I hope Chad has seen this all too clearly this year outdoors. No disgrace in him doing SX only.

I'm not sure Chad have shown his full potential this summer. He did break his back and had major surgery less than 6 months ago. I won't believe his not capable of winning anymore the day he says it himself.

I'll simply say, I'm Ok with the Dungey, Roczen, Tomac, Canard show. It's made for some really REALLY good racing so far. Add a little Brayton, Millsaps, Barcia for good measure and we have racing only an idiot would complain about I think. I appreciate the contributions of the vets but I'm ok with where it's going and I'm ok with it happening right now.

Hire a rider and manage the team. In my opinion he has nothing to prove at this point in his career. In the early years I wasn't a fan at all of Reed. Thought he was a cry baby, heavy on the excuses. In the last couple years tho he's really made a believer out of me. I respect him more now than most out there. In a lot of ways you have to. Dude is legit, like him or not. I feel that he's proved what he's made of. Now he should be totally ok with slipping into a management only or management/test rider roll.

This. The changing of the guard happened in 2010. Reed and Stewart will probably never win a major title again. Now the twi Ryan's (or at least one at this point) have to worry about Eli, Roczen, and then Eli and Roczen will have to worry about Adam C. in a couple of years.
