IF you aren't getting it from a name brand builder then some things to look for is how is the headstay built? You want 2 bolts on the chassis side. Look a the location of the new Y piece. The good ones use the original upward bends on the bottom frame rails to not reduce strength.
You can get gen 4 CRF250 rollers for $800-$1000, its hard not to put one together if you are into 2 strokes even a little bit.
My next built will be with a 1985 CR500 engine, said to be the most abrupt power delivery, in a Gen 5 chassis unless I can find a clean 85.
The Shop
I've seen 500s in steel ktm, RM,YZ, and KX 250 two- stroke frames.
I did an RM chassis because Service Honda's prices were out of my price range. Thankfully I was warned about the MPS bullcrap and stayed away.
I have not seen it mentioned on here, but I think Service Honda went out of business.
The guy needs to stop pulling this crap on people.
I've had a CR500AF before that I bought ready done from a guy who I think had OCD because that was a home built bike but the amount of time and care he'd put into the build was unbelievable, totally mint.
I want to build a 250AF some day but I honestly think the only way to go about the frame mods is by doing the research yourself on how it should be done and either you welding it or someone you know who is very good welding it for you while you're there. There are too many horror stories about AFs breaking to risk sending it to someone you don't know.
That said I think the first gen rmz/kxf 250 frames would be good to use for a 500 as those bikes are dirt cheap these days and handle fairly well.
I built my own. It turned out okay. I think fabbing the pipe was harder than the frame.
