2003 Suzuki Rm85 Questions

Hi VitalMX,

I am new to the 2-stroke world and am not very familiar with owning nor riding 2-strokes. I recently bought a 2003 Rm85 and it has a Gold Series FMF exhaust with carbon fiber reeds and excel wheels. It runs very strong and kicks over first try every time, even in the cold. I know the basics behind riding a 2-stroke such as keeping it in a high rpm and not letting it "bog" down and also that there is no engine breaking!! I was really curious as to what was the best mixture to run with and also and particular premix that anyone would recommend for that model/year bike? I would also like to know if there are any key points i should know about owning/riding this rm85? I would like to take care of it and keep it running strong for a long time to come!

Motul 800 2t oil
Its pricey but a high quality oil also buy a manual if you don't have one

Hi Trav138,

Thanks for the reply. I was curious, i noticed my coolant was decreasing when i would ride the bike. I checked the oil and sure enough the oil was all milk! I was wondering if you have had this issue and/or what part do i need to replace to stop the coolant from leaking into my crankcase? My guess would be its the oil seal in my water pump? that or the impeller? Im not sure, like i said before i have never owned a 2-stroke nor worked on them. Any help would be much appreciated!

Water pump impeller and seal/seals are leaking. It's probably a good idea to just replace the while pump. Definitely run the Motul 800 at 32:1. If you can get some race gas it wouldn't hurt to run a 50/50 mix with pump premium or just some good ol 100LL from the local airport. Have fun and rip that RM up!

I would replace the water pump oil seal. Happened on a KX 250 of mine once.

I ran the Boyesen Hi flo impeller in my sons RM85 (bike never got hot, the impellor is metal as opposed to the stock plastic one, and it flows way more coolant), Amsoil Dominator at 40:1 on Chevron 94, and Wiseco Pro-lite pistons and the bike was rock solid for 4 years. I'd do the top end every 30-35hrs and it would still look like new. Crank was bullet proof.
The Dominator premix is known for being really good for limited wear on internals. The only issue I had was the seal went on the impeller after 3 years and had to be replaced. Went to do an oil change and the oil was milky as hell. Back to normal after the seal was replaced.

It's always weird to see people who have never ridden a two stroke. Sad the way this sport went, in my opinion. Good part is most of the 2t newbies will end up loving them.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I have all the seals and gaskets on order and already have the motor ready to be flushed to remove all the "milk" from the gearbox. I had a few questions about this process.
1: What is the best way to clean out the remaining "milky" oil/coolant that is still coating my gearbox internals?
2: What Gear/Transmission oil is best suited for my 2003 Suzuki Rm85?
3: What Coolant should i run in my radiator? I know it calls for undiluted coolant that i have to mix myself 50/50

I will be running motul 800 2t premix with a 32:1 ratio, i have been running with 93 octane from the regular pump and i also have been running a hotter plug a Br9es instead of the Br10es. Also still running the stock impellor, will probably upgrade to a hi flo boyesen impellor soon enough.

Any suggestions as to my running set up and or any other details about running these bikes i would love to hear!

Keep an eye on the frame under the tank, around the steering stem between the radiators, they are notorious for cracking and if not caught can break in half.

Maxima Coolanol is a great coolant, so it Motocool. I always run GMC Autotrack II in the transmissions and have had nothing but good results. As for the remaining milkyness. Put the correct amount of a super cheap oil in it and ride it around for a bit, then change it again. That should do the trick. I think it's 550ml if I remember right. But it's been 2 years. Good luck.

Awesome! Thanks Malachi177, plugs on the way! Isnt Maxima Coolanol and motocool both pre diluted coolants? I will have to try that GMC Autotrack II.

Is the GMC Autotrack fluid you are talking about the ACDelco Transfer Case Fluid? Thats what you used on your RM85?

I've tried virtually everything in the transmissions of my 2 strokes. Engine oil of various weights, Amsoil MTF, different varieties of ATF, PTO fluid, Maxima Gear oil, etc, etc. The best stuff I've found is Red Line Superlight Shockproof gear oil. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=42&pcid=8 At $17 a quart it's not cheap and makes a mess when you split the cases, but the transmissions shift great and it protects the gears really well. Is it for everyone-no. For most folks some super cheap ATF type F works awesome and you can't beat the price.

As for coolants- unless you're having cooling issues just use the cheapest aluminum safe anti-freeze (just about anything from the auto parts store) mixed with distilled water at a 50% ratio. Change it when you do a top-end rebuild and don't worry about it.

Unless you're really just trail riding I would suggest the stock heat range plug. Pick up a new one for cheap and swap it when doing a new piston too.

I had great success with Maxima Super M or K2 on my son's RM85's. Used 100ll for fuel and mixed it @ 32:1.

Keep in mind that throwing money at the bike with aftermarket stuff won't usually make you faster, just poorer. Keep the bike in good shape by maintaining it well (this includes servicing the suspension) and replacing stuff when it's time and you'll be in much better shape than throwing fist fulls of dollars in aftermarket stuff into a decade plus old bike that you're likely just out having a good time on (you're not headed to Loretta's on it).

Yes, that's the stuff. It's blue in colour Smile The stuff works amazing. As for Coolanol and the Motocool. Yes they're just poured directly in. Good luck! I miss my son being on his RM85, loved watching that class. The bike was insanely reliable, and fast.
