1985 strikes back at LL quali

A friend of mine traveled up to Spring Creek this past weekend to try and qualify in the +25 at the Loretta Lynn's regional. While there he was parked next to a 15 year old kid who did something I felt was pretty damn noteworthy. This wasn't a stunt.. the kid doesn't have much money and this is what he was able to pull together.

He took this thing..



And did this with it.. yes that's the HIGHLY competitive 250B mod class.. yes.. that 1985 CR250 won a moto against 42 other dudes. My friend said he was scrubbing and riding the shit out of this thing all weekend. Unfortunately his 1st moto finish was mid-pack so the results weren't enough to get him qualified in the 250B. But he did easily make it in the 2-stroke B/C with a 2nd overall. So if he feels like making the trip to race just 1 class (he could also possibly make it in the B as an alternate) then you'll see this bike tearing up Loretta Lynn's.

That shows pure talent . Most of the top riders in B class live at a training facility and ride almost every day and have the best equiptment money can buy.
Good for this kid.for showing them that when your that good you can ride anything.

8th overall? He has a really good shot at getting in as an alternate not to mention a few guys ahead of him from outside their local regional area. If those guys qualify in their local regional too, then he automatically moves up and that would get him in.

That's cool and all, but technically, is that bike legal for LL's?
It has to meet homologation rules and on older bikes, I believe that includes something like a 5-year exclusion rule, where a bike is no longer homologated after 5-years, basically because you can't get them any longer and they're not readily available...there isn't 500 units in showrooms for sale.

Again, I think it's bad ass what the kid did, but I do not think the guy can legally race that bike

I believe that's only in the pro rulebook. The regular AMA amateur rulebook itself has this on machine eligibility. Especially in the 2-stroke class, most of the bikes are beyond their homoligation date.

2. 115cc and up Limited Class

a. To be approved for AMA-sanctioned competition,
motorcycles (engines and frames) must be available
through retail distributors.

The MX Sports amateur supplimental rules only mention this:

B. MACHINE ELIGIBILITY AND CLASSIFICATION

1. Riders may ride a limited motorcycle in a non-limited class.
2. 2014 model machines are NOT eligible in any class.

The general AMA rules are a bit vague on that point, which isn't a big surprise.

I think it might be an issue if he were racing the stock class, but probably not a class that allows modifications.

Would hate to be the kids he beat when they got back to the pits on their uber trick 2013 model bikes. Woohoo But daddy....LOL

Love seeing stuff like this. Fast kid, old equipment, determination, real motocross. Two thumbs up!

He's a modern day Billy Fosnock! I saw a post about it on Facebook and a buddy of mine who manages a big dealership offered him a new bike. I bet he'll have something nicer when its time for the national.

This is the most "moto" thing I have seen posted anywhere in a long time.

I am more excited to think about this kid racing at LL's than I have been about watching any factory min rider make their pro debut.

GuyB, How about you sticky this one.

Put it on the old school board as well.

Somebody please set up a paypal account so we can help this kid get to Loretta"s.

I must say not the same bike but I rode a '87 CR 250 that a guy had decked out and I think I went as fast or faster on that bike then I can on my current issue 450. Conventional forks are PLUSH!

Okay, great story, but riddle me this: Wouldn't it be just as effective to campaign a later-model 2-stroke? What does a mint 85' CR250 go for these days, vintage guys? I know you can get an early 2000's YZ for around $2000 and I know that parts have got to be MUCH easier to find than for a 1985 CR250. Again, great story, impressive feat, but I can't help but wonder what the real motivation is for riding a 28-year-old bike. Damn, and I'm usually not the buzz-kill.
