The 05 and earlier kaw/suzuki joint effort was problematic and I wouldn't go near one of those. The 2006 was a great bike and he should be able to find those around really cheap. I just sold a 2007 with 20 hours on it for $3000 with $400 worth of spare parts.

He's actually going to trade for one. What were the major problems?

Thats all just rumors. I never had any issues with my 04. It all about maintenance. Keep the clearance in spec and you will never have a problem. The 06 and newer kawi 250f's seem to be bigger grenades.

Long time lurker here. The 04's seemed to have the problems. I have an 05 myself and know a few people who have them.
No problems that aren't caused by the riders that I have heard of or seen. They are a very good, reliable bike.

I had a 05 for 1 season & never had a problem with it. Sold it to a friend who used it 2 more seasons(rode once a week) & didn't had a single problem. He had the valves adjusted once...never even did a piston. I'd say it's a solid bike.

I had mine for 2 years and never a single problem. Threw a new piston, rings and valves in at about 60 hours. The 05' is a solid bike as it got the beefed up tranny, better radiator cap, and the rest of the 04' kinks worked out. If the price is right and the bike is in good enough shape it could be a solid buy.

i had the 04 rmz and it was junk. it revs to about 9000 and then flattens out. i had to hit everything a gear higher on it than on my old 01 yz125, and it had a 6 speed tranny. plus it would overheat so badly i would have to add coolant after every single session on the track, it would boil it down to the fins. the 05 got larger radiators, an easier to use seperate water pump/ oil filter cover, and i believe a 1.6 rad cap as opposed to the 04's 1.1 cap.

I had an '05 and it ran okay, but had zero top end. Damn thing turned like a dream though.

You just had to ride it like a four stroke and not a two stroke, ie short shifting to stay in the torque band.

You sound like the rest of the people who blow up 250f's.

Like most bikes, if its in good shape and has been taken care of, go for it. Its a good bike that doesnt have half the problems everyone says it has. I have an 04 and have not had a single problem with it going on 4 years of ownership.

I sometimes wonder about the guys that go WFO when in the air over jumps, then wonder why they drop valves and break valve springs.

Not rumor. I had an 04 that was well maintained. Went through everything from valves to the electrical system. F that bike. :x

The '04 KXF/RMZ 250 was one of the worst bikes in the modern era. Slow, wonky handling, and horrifically unreliable. The '05s took care of some of the reliability issues, but not all. The fact that you don't see many around anymore is a very telling fact.

Stay far away from the 04 and 05!!! Spend a few extra bucks and get an 06.. handle better and the motor is more reliable. I've had all 3 and the 06 is the best.. Instead of upgrading to an 08 I just rebuilt my motor on the 06 and the shop said it was very clean inside.. replaced piston but everything else was fine.. I've adjusted the valves once on the 06
