Decided it was time to finally start a build thread for this.
We got the bike for $500 from a family friend back in 2013. It was pretty much stock with new plastic.
I decided to go with an updated front end. Got 07 YZ250F clamps and had a local shop press the old stem into the new clamps. Then bought a set of 05 YZ forks from eBay for $200. They ended up being in great shape! Seals were leaking so I took them to my good friend Brian over at N2Dirt along with the shock. Other than the leaking seals everything else was great and front and rear are set up for my weight.
I ended up getting a 2005 YZ250 2 years ago. Some of you have seen the build thread for it, it was my baby!! Well, I took the forks off of this bike and put them on the 05 because they were already set up, and they were damn good!! Brian did an awesome job! Unfortunately, I sold that 05 about a year ago and never swapped the forks back. So now I need to have these forks done up by Brian.
I also had some trouble with the stock carb on this bike! That stupid thing wouldn’t run right no matter what I did to the jetting. Ended up finding a carb from a 99 YZ250 on eBay and through it on. It immediately ran better! Also put a new FMF fatty on. Tried finding a raw pipe, but could not find one anywhere. If you know of one in good shape, please let me know!
Anyways, ended up going with the 06-09 front fender and number plate. Ended up switching the front number plate to the one I took off of my 2005. I personally like the look a bit better. I was also able to take the stock front wheel from my 2005 and put it on the 98 so everything just fit a little better. I still have a ways to go and a bunch of plans for this bike and progress will be slow as I work my regular job, live the family life and work on other bikes for friends.

The wheel currently on the bike is from the 05 I had. Wheel bearings were gone! Thankfully, before I had the 05 wheel, I put new wheel bearings in the original front wheel from this bike. Well, I checked part numbers and they were the same!! So, last night I popped the new bearings out of the original wheels and slapped them in the 05 wheel!
I know it's a baby update, but it's progress lol. I also just ordered a white rear fender this weekend!!! Finally decided on a Bradshaw tribute type of build. Can't wait to get with the boys over at Factory Effex and get the graphics designed and printed.
The one thing I want for this bike more than anything, is a raw pipe. I can't find one at all. I've asked PC and FMF if they could make one and just not nickel plate it, but both answered with the, "well we never made them for X bike that way, so no."
I bought a 98 Yz 250 new,been with a Yamaha ever since...
You really can’t go wrong with Yamaha, especially their 2 strokes

Yours looks awesome! I've seen a handful of guys that were able to find raw pipes for their 96-98's, but they were super hard to find from what they said. Probably cost a good chunk too. I've thought about possibly taking a 99+ pipe and cutting the part that mates with the cylinder off and welding it to the piece from a 98 pipe, but I don't know if it would be worth it. I still have the stock pipe and might send it to PipeRepair in Oregon to have them fix the dents and do the raw finish on it. Need to talk to a few local places about taking the nickle plating off of the FMF as well.
It really is amazing that FMF and PC aren't able to take a freshly finished pipe and just not have it plated for the guys that want one.
The plan is to go through it but it will be a slow process. Need to finish a 77 RM 125 and go through last years race bike the 81 YZ 465.
