1/11/2021 8:35am I have also been busy on some fabrication: I made my own bike stand out of 16 gauge sheet metal. I had some metallic blue paint leftover from another project that closely matches the F4 tank, and duplicated the kawasaki logo off the tank and cut it out on each side of the stand.

1/11/2021 8:43am Time for an update! The junkman- thanks for chiming in, there is a lot of really good info on your site! I have watched pretty much all your barn fresh restoration videos. Plenty of really good information on rebuilding Hatta Forks too. Here is a link for anyone interested: https://www.thejunkmanadv.com/barn-fresh-episode-7.html Very neat, well-done bikes and research! Speedman- you are providing...

1/7/2021 10:02pm Speedman, so much good information here, seriously! Thank you. I'm glad I haven't dove too far down one avenue yet. I'm going to take a little time to digest all this!

1/4/2021 11:31am Got the spacer for my triple tree machined and the rear axle spacers calculated and machined to have my sprocket line up with the jackshaft sprocket.
I also had to drill and tap two of the holes in the bottom of the triple tree to mount the front fender.

1/3/2021 11:36pm This is incredible information to have! My next big step is figuring out all this geometry, so this information is really timely. Thank you. I am thinking I need to modify the angle of the rear shock. I had fabbed up some billet shock relocation brackets on my f4 enduro a couple months ago, to achieve a more "laid down"...

1/3/2021 6:21pm I meant to suggest a formula attributed to the late Gil Vaillancourt, who founded Works Performance and built many, many shocks for vintage bikes of different eras. He said that anti-squat characteristics were best if you line up the countershaft center, swingarm pivot, and rear axle in a straight line as your reference: 40% of rear wheel travel should be above this line, 60% below. When the countershaft position is already dictated by existing engine mounts, you will mainly use shock length to dial this in for AHRMA-legal wheel travel; then the Hatta fork should give you a lot of...

12/30/2020 1:56pm Found a back wheel! It's off a 1970 kawasaki F5 Bighorn 350. Got the wheel (in good condition), backing plate and brake cable (needs repair) for $90 locally.

12/29/2020 7:31pm Rick Siemen had a piece on used bikes to seek or avoid, since some earlier bikes were still competitive and reliable enough to be a potential bargain way of getting into racing if you found an example that wasn't worn out. Bikes like sidepipe CZs or early square barrel Maico 400s. He mentions the 238 Greenstreak as a strong engine and says the American Eagle version is a real sleeper if you could find one, surprising power and handling. Not many other Big Four Japanese bikes made the grade, maybe the Suzuki 185, and the DT-1 because how to improve...

12/29/2020 5:00pm Super Lube Oil injection system "speed kit" delete: A common way to decrease weight and simplify equipment is to delete an oil injection system. This is controversial, but I believe it depends on the bike. I had a 100cc Kawasaki Centurion where the oil line fed the oil right into the crankcase above a main bearing. Deleting this would have...

12/29/2020 3:16pm It is very interesting you mention the American Eagle 238. Not very much can be found online about that bike that was supposedly the "crown jewel" of the short-lived American Eagle Brand. according to an article found at (http://graeterartgallerybuildingspeed.blogspot.com/2012/07/1969-america…) here is some info on that bike which is a very close relative to the Kawasaki Green Streak: "Having made his...

12/29/2020 3:06pm Nice start to the build. I have an F9 Bighorn road racer and have also played around with some of the F81M stuff so have an interested in these older Kwaka's. Following along.

12/29/2020 3:06pm Fabulous work, and it's great to watch a genuine bike BUILD from the frame up. I am curious about the 238, as I am pretty sure the first MX bike I ever saw was an American Eagle 238, and it seems like a very underrated engine for the time frame. Not curious enough to get one, mind you, but like to see someone building & racing a good one--

12/29/2020 3:21pm Billet Carb Boot: I was having trouble with dirt getting past the original rubber carb boot on the motor. It was also cracked, which didn't help any either, especially with my plans for this motor. I couldn't find a reproduction boot, and wasnt interested in dusting my expensive top end parts, so I decided to make my own trick carb...

12/29/2020 4:36pm Engine modifications: I am planning to use the engine off my other F4 enduro for this bike. I had previously had the cylinder re-sleeved and put a new slotted connecting rod and top end in it. I never replaced any bearings, and needed to fix the kickstarter spring, so I tore it all down again. I decided against cutting the...

12/29/2020 4:32pm Exhaust: I've been keeping an eye out on eBay for exhaust. Genuine F21m exhaust pipes go for $250-$300 in poor condition. From time to time people sell reproduction pipes, the last one I saw was $450. This doesn't fit with my low budget plans, but neither does the heavy stock F4 exhaust or its lack of performance. I came across...

12/29/2020 4:29pm more on HATTA forks! There is a lot of opinions on these forks being either good or bad. It is said that Mr. Hatta designed landing gear for bombers during World War II and was quoted as saying, "It's easy to make a suspension for a bomber. It only has to stroke once. A motor cycle is confusing. It has...

12/29/2020 12:05am Frame lightening 2.0! There are some rules in the AHRMA handbook outlining kickstand issues. The F4 has a heavily built kickstand that sticks out the side under the bike and also prevents the bike from sitting on a conventional dirt bike stand properly. As a result, it wasn't a real hard decision to cut it off entirely. I figure down...
