Started as a clunker rescued from the side of the road at a mini storage clean out for $10.00. Robbed parts for almost ten years before the youngest son decided it would be a good "builder". We cut the top frame tube, removed 9 mm and welded and gusseted it all back together just like the Al Baker article in Motocross Action magazine showed to do it back in 1979. Allows to run a more common 21 inch front wheel instead of the stock 23 incher with the Claw Action Bridgestone. I had a scrap set of salvage yard Works performance shocks I rebuilt and painted and he decided the best thing we could do for a ten dollar bike was to use the super collectible, 4 grand on Ebay, Fox Factory Forx that were over in the corner of the garage. A 1978/79 CR250 front fender provides a little sharper look, and the 1980 CR125 side panels and seat give it a better stance overall. Motor is fresh and soon most everything else will be too.

Any comments on the appearance compared to a stock 79 model???

I had the 1980 model, which they'd put back to a 21 inch front wheel. I liked that bike. Nice project!

Thats tight Newman. I still have a special place in my heart for the old non-FIM sideplates though.

Agreed on the side plates.

I've got two pretty complete parts bikes (I'm sure you're covered-but if not, let me know and I'll send you anything you might be short).

I could use an extra cylinder and head. Prefer no bent or broken fins and could use the intake and exhaust manifolds with it. I can send it to Millenium Tech. and have it replated if necessary. I bought an extra cylinder off Ebay and the f-wad didn't state that it had been sleeved. Also could use a stock chain guide for the rear. The one I have is an 80 model and it's offset and won't work on the 79 model. Let me know how much. I can PayPal or send money.

No shit!! Note to self.....old fat slow dad needs to fatten up mainjet before letting young fearless kids ride his stuff. I ride my junk race after race, put them on and within two laps the piston is toast! Guessing old age really is catching up.

Considering my checking account currently looks like a high school kids, I'm going with ...no. Especially when you start with a 79 CR125! That was the one year oddball morphoditeof the century.

Spent a lot of seat time on that's predecessor. Underrated bike. Great motor and controls. Ok suspension and handling. Good rider. At least that's my story and i'm stickin to it. Tongue

Actually, i just noticed the rest of your post and was thrown by the 80 side panels. I rode the same bike. The 21 actually made it turn. Sweet. I want to ride it.

We should have a segment every week called newmann's garage. It's awesome reading about the restoration of old bikes.

Thanks!

Great looking bike. I think I'm going to cut my frame ala Al Baker and MXA. My friend has a copy of MXA with the article. Time to get my hacksaw out.
Greta stuff!

Needs a Thor swinarm.
Actually, I really want to get Karl Landrus to build me one of these Mugen arms and toss on a set of Ohlin's or Race Tech shocks. Going to get it lined out first before we toss that much at it.

Ok, I've got a good cylinder w/intake and exhaust manifolds, both of the heads have a couple broken fins, though. I have the chain guide (missing the roller) and cannot find an airbox cover (I can keep looking for that). PM me w/your email address and I can get this stuff on its way.

What was the theory behind the 23 inch front wheel? It obviously was not a success but was it supposed to help handling/cornering or suspension performance?

It was kinda supposed to be like a larger diameter car wheel/tire-longer tire patch w/less sidewall gives more traction and rolls over bumps easier. They definitely went past the point of diminishing returns, though,
