Dude, I remember Josh White(the rookie) and Eddie Fiola(sp)the vet, that were tops in the freestyle world at the time. I had a blue GT with white mag wheels, fork stands and rear frame stands(not pegs), all the standart GT equipment. I had their posters on my wall and the GT freestyle tour was only an 8 ft quarter pipe, holy shit, how did they hit that thing?
Here is an old one I found on the web of Monte hitting the Bike Gallery portable quarter pipe
that they would tote to shows. I'm thinking this had to be Circa 85-86.

Look guy's all Dan is guilty of is not knowing exactly how to break in to the "Industrie"

Okay so he lied but fuck who wouldn't people on here jump on like a pack of dogs on a 3 legged cat.

I wish I had a dollar for every News Paper article that was different then what the person thought it would be and whats the big deal he isn't changing it to any tabloid shit.

Only advise I have for Dan is don't turn this into a Job because it's the best way to learn to hate it.

I may have missed something, but I don't hear any of the riders complaining about Dan's writing. If they aren't complaining, then Dan isn't writing anything they don't want out there. I bet their good with him cleaning up all the um, uh, ohs, dude & changing up some of the sentence too.

Easy to talk shit behind a screen I guess? The guy makes one mistake and you can't let him live it down.......which makes you an even bigger douche'.

Either way Dan.....great read man! And thanks! And thanks GuyB for posting up that picture of Monte and Josh. I had many races against Monte in the 250 Int and 30A classes. He's a class act for sure , and so is his boy!
You know whats funny....is back when Monte was racing MX ,I never knew that was the same Monte Hill that was into freestyle.
Til one day Jack Lowery filled me in....
Jack was also a pretty good freestyle guy,he also raced 125jr against Jim & myself back in the day.
I don't know if you remember Jack or not,he always rode a Kawi and ran the #33,had long hair....real nice guy.
He lived right on Lacamas Lake and was the one who had the half pipe next to the water.

This Monte Hill? Snuck a couple shots when I was at their place shootin Justin. Monte thought he was bein' sneaky and busted his bike out because he thought I was busy and wouldn't shoot him. He had just started ridin' a little when I took these, and broke his humerous a few days later riding mx.

It started raining at the same time Monte saw me with the camera, ending the session. Monte and Justin are covering the quarter up.

Cycle Country is the over/under. The step down that made the landing for the Gap was the "Buddy Jump". Man I miss that section! It's now just a straight as the whoops are gone.

that sucks for all the buddy fans. I dislocated my left knee off that fucker on a WR-400.

Didn't Leach have a jump named after him after that there also? Something about hitting the tower??

Stil wish the track was the same as it used to be. It used to be one of the best tracks in the NW. Since they took out that section though, it is far to tamed down. But I remember back in the day when there was only a select few people hitting the gap to the buddy jump. By far one of the biggest jumps I've seen. Cliff don't you have pictures of Josh or Matt Wilson hitting it?

Well , Washougal had Leech's lump. But at Albany , "I think" they named that big single ( finish line jump ) right after the landing on the buddy jump , something after my friend Jason Parks. He stuck his bike all the way through the announcers tower wall. And a few years later.....damn near did it again. BTW.....the buddy jump was a pretty cool jump.....perfect "Lofter". That big cycle country jump was really fun to if you did it clean. But man.....it sucked over jumping that thing a hair. Was a pretty small landing to aim for , and completely BLIND........just cross your fingers nobody was down on the other side.

Ok, cool. First raced Dover in 74, raced Mulkey, Washougal, Mt View, and mainly PIR from 81 thru 86. Rode Albany a couple times when it first opened early 80's but it seemed a little too supercrossy at the time..

That is cool...
That Mulkey park track was cool....I never got a chance to ride it on a big bike (was on minis back then).
Remember the big Shakeys Pizza ski jump, that thing was cool.

Yeah, Albany wasn't natural at all compared to MT. VIEW. Smile
I always liked Mt. View & Washougal just as long as it wasn't muddy.
Making it up the hills on a 50 or an 80 was a task on that clay in the mud. Smile

Do you remember Brett Woodring (he was from Estacada ,he was fast )?
Here is an old photo I found of him & I back in the 50 expert class, circa 1981 maybe at PIR...
I also got some old ones of Eric Hall & myself I have to dig up (I'm sure you remember Eric).

That's Brett in the Honda jersey & me in the Yamaha jersey.

Mulkey was really fun, really liked that ski jump, it was fun the other way also, before it closed we went out for a practice day and rode the track backwards until some people complained and we had to switch back, good times..

I don't remember the name of Brett Woodring, definitely remember Erich Hall, that dude could fly. I hear he is involved with Washougal now.

There was a place I grew up riding at and a lot of people rode there, we called it Wilson hill, others Powell Butte, or Meadowland dairy in southeast Portland, that place was big and we had several cool tracks up there. After Erich got a pro ride and I can't remember who it was with in 85 I think, he was up there on his CR125, I rode a CR125 also, and he asked if I wanted to switch bikes for a few laps because he wanted to ride a stock one, of course I said yes and got to ride his set up bike, I still remember how plush his suspension was, and smooth and wide the power was compared to my stock bike.

Still ride at Mt View, it is my favorite track around here, plus the owners Jenny and Keith are tremendous people.

If you have any other pics from back then would love to see them..
4/16/2011 3:53pm
I would also love to see the pics. I am just about the same age as you guys, and those 60cc bikes were my dream bikes. My first bike ended up being a '79 RM60, but I only rode it twice because I crashed the hell out of it the first time I rode it (in '82).

Here's an oldy of Eric & me back when Eric rode for LOP.
I think he won Ponca this same year.

Here are couple of randoms....
One from PIR on the back side after the little down hill.
And the other is of Woodlands start, pre MT ST Helens Eurption I believe.
Also 1979 Seattle SX (I think) , Doug wheeling the entire track.
I've got a box of photos at my folks house somewhere lol,I will have dig through them sometime and see if I have any cool stuff in there. Smile

I always wanted an italjet back in the day...but my Dad would never go for it.
Instead we just ended up buying a couple YZ50's and getting them bored out to 60's...
Then when the YZ60's came out we got one of those.

Here is my old RM 50 brand new (1979 I think)...

After a long day of practice in the mud...

Yeah I do somewhere, on some DVD I archived away. We were at a private practice or school or something when Josh was still amateur, back in like '04, I think, and he was hucking the gap all the way to the landing on his yz250f, gettin' a gnarly whip done in between. It was one of the craziest things I've seen. Almost as good as him transferring off the indoor track at Salem onto the hay bales that were lining it and riding wheelies. Wall-riding the tunnel from the Cycle Country over/under was probably a good third. I'll see if I can dig up those shots.

Regarding the track, I agree, we all agree it needs more air. I mean, it used to be Albany Supercross. Just gotta' get that point across to the owner. Those of you who know Bob, know how that can be!

We have a step-down on the far edge of the track, by the end of the start that is called Leech's Lump as well. Apparently the Leeches weren't content to leave the only one at 'Shougy. Smile I think three people hit that tower. That's one of the reasons the Buddy is no longer there. When did Parks do it? Was his the bike that was sticking halfway out?
