Most people I talk to that don't know anything about MX associate it with freestyle and daredevil crap.
They certainly do exist in MX. There are a lot of punk flat biller wanna be gangters in this sport and it's embarrassing to those of us normal people in the sport. It's a counterculture sport and it attracts a certain crowd, that's just the way it is. I'm not saying everyone is like that obviously, but those mentioned things are a big part of the sport.
My girlfriend loves to give me a hard time about it...
"Wait... do you guys go out in between the trucks or after them?"
"Don't all the same people go to these things?"
MX/SX is a niche sport I like that, I don't try to fit in.
Pit Row
There is no Misperception of this sport because no one knows it exist outside of the MX community.
Most people just say "that's crazy." It's seen as kind of freakshow. The athletic aspect does not even register to the average person. It doesn't even cross their mind that it's physically strenuous. You can blame all the promotion based on crash footage and highlighting the daredevil aspect.
Any couch potato can run the 5 lap dashes run these days.
Five laps can seem very, very long. If that's easy for you, you should be running triathlons.
WTH?
I think that most people think we get on a bike, do wheelies down the street, then go on the dirt and jump big jumps, then ride through the mud and trees for awhile.
Most people have no concept of what motocross is and I don't give a crap.
45 min. amateur races? Or pro?
I'd say you have to compare pro back then to pro now, and amateur likewise. Were the Vet amateur classes running 45 min. back then?
Training just does not seem to be as an important part of the mix as it was in the 70's and 80's.
Actually could a modern day 4 stroke last 2 x 45 minutes?
When I see him I still say "why don't you just floor it?"
