Agreed. It's good to call a spade a spade. We are all mostly adults and should be able to handle criticism, and be accountable if we happen to overstep or take something too far. Shit happens.

The individual in particular I'm assuming you're referring to would've been weeded out by a community driven mechanism, I have pretty high confidence in this.

That said, I still personally enjoyed some of his posts from a while back, as they did make me reflect a bit at times. I did see the degradation over time though. I remind myself everyone is human and everyone is going through their own shit in their actual world. That doesn't mean being a racist prick is cool. Good on you for calling it out.

I stand by my original statement.

Up and down votes being used as a social rating, and banishment is, the stupidest damn thing I've ever heard of.

I've seen it used on a popular cycling forum. Those with "a full tank of green" were the ones posting nothing more than drivel.

We're supposed to be frikkin adults here, not a bunch of school children looking for the love they're not getting from mommy and stepdad.

I agree that we are supposed to be adults here. However, the fact that ML had to start this thread and remove the option to discuss politics suggests many of us aren't capable of having adult discussions about such things.

Not into it? Don't click a thread or engage. Should be pretty simple.

The fact that ML needs to moderate, deal with daily complaints from adults about things strangers say to each other online (adults), is telling.

This would weed out the type of person you just mentioned, taking some of the load off folks like ML needing to send adults to time out for being dicks online.

It would attempt to make people think for a second before posting.

My suggestion isn't about looking for love or hate "like school children who are looking for love they aren't getting from mommy and stepdad". Instead, make the existing feature actually useful. Let the herd of "adults" govern themselves a bit more.

If that's the stupidest damn thing you've ever heard of, then congratulations - sounds like you've had it pretty good!

Could have just said you don't agree or that it's a bad idea, and let us know why you think that. I appreciate the response though, it did make me chuckle a bit!

EDIT - If your post was sarcasm then well played sir!

Less threads started, which were just put out there to argue.

But more posts in the threads that are primarily fun or genuinely interesting for all without the screaming into the void rhetoric.

It's a good change, IMO.

I've been really busy the past few days (got married Monday), so I haven't popped in to take a peek at what's new in this area. There are a bit of things I need to look through, but decently mellow for the most part. Even a topic or two where some near-political commentary was brought up but not super direct, just pointing a finger at one side with the usual explicits. Just some decent, thought-out responses skirting it.

One topic is a bit of a shit show, the Utah Data Center one...

ML… just so you know, the married stuff that is keeping you so busy right now will change.
You’ll be even busier, but with things that aren’t as much fun.

Congrats!!

Word. Were you in the red or green over there yourself?

I can definitely understand why you in particular would not feel comfortable with such a feature being  implemented here.

It is more a measure of the quality of the content you generate, as measured by the community. Perhaps you could call it a social credit score. Does it add value, is it respectful, or more digital pollution, etc. It would certainly reduce the number of shitty threads where adults argue like school children.

I guess your original post on my stupidest damn suggestion you've ever heard of was not written sarcastically. In that case, I do appreciate the irony.

Point taken though. Definitely not the first, or last, stupidest damn suggestion I have made in my life. I will leave it at that.

Back then, I built downhill mt bike trails.

Politicking the land mgmt co. for exclusive land set aside for us in a place originally meant for ATV's, Jeeps, and Motorcycles. Showing there was a need for a dedicated DH area, and that it would sell land use permit$. (And it did)

That was the main reason I was on that cycling board.

Trail conditions, maintenance, new builds, closures etc... was what most of my posts were about.

How about let the thread originator exile posters from the thread if they are just there to agitate. If you get the boot, you can start your own thread about the topic. However, if you've just been being an ass, nobody will engage. Pretty soon, you'll self moderate.

Or... just proper board moderation.

Which is a huge, time consuming pain in the ass.

(For a time I modded a DH section of a board. Never again.)

Interesting idea. I think an issue with this is the original poster can police the discussion, and filter out posts that don't necessarily align with their view, and label it as agitating, which sanitizes healthy discussion from multiple perspectives. Perhaps that is what some people want though.

@Joey Bridges Sounds to me like your tank should've been full green on that other forum. Thank you for your service my man! I was in Bentonville a couple months back and rode the trails there. Millions of WalMart F-U dollars spent on bringing in professional trail builders, and they did a great job. Meanwhile here in Orange County, CA, we have world class trails - all largely built 'illegally' by local riders volunteering their time and effort. It creates a lot of value for the community. I personally love building and maintaining trails.

I don't think Walmart was worried about having to jump through any hoops to get things built. It's a major pain working with the county here, and often they end up sanitizing (and destabilizing) good legacy trails.

I will stop there so I don't end up getting political with this topic - probably already did. Whoops.

Well, if you exile everyone with opposing opinion, nobody would participate. Threads are only interesting if you have different opinions and different input. We all know who the agitators are, and yet they are still allowed to post and cause chaos. Legitimate difference of opinion is fun and healthy. But the reality is, as you get older, the things you see changing are largely big enough issues that it brings politics into the discussion. Someone 25 years old, his world revolves around riding his bike, time with girlfriend, and getting his monthly bills paid. Someone 50 years old wonders why he's been paying registration fees for the last 30 years and they are closing the riding areas the fees were supposed to keep open.

Very well said @ToolMaker. I agree with everything you mentioned, and can see where your suggestion does have potential I didn't see initially. People would eventually stop putting wood on a fire that isn't worth sitting around...

What I love about this forum is that it brings people from all walks of life, from all over the globe, over a shared passion for moto. Non-moto has actually been one of the few online places I chimed in on deeper issues we all face today for that very reason (Actually the only place).

It's unfortunate we couldn't play nicely and the powers that be here felt it necessary to remove the ability to discuss politics, especially given the state of things today. But at the same time I get it. ML and co. are busy people with lives of their own, and political discussion in non-moto is not a primary revenue driver for VitalMX, and the juice was not worth the squeeze.

Public land staying public. The new vehicle standards.  The Bend Oregon shooting. Cost of living. Climate change. Property  taxes. Car insurance . Home owners insurance. The national debt!

We can't talk about this stuff because Michael can't handle getting 40 notifications a day from NARCS?

Michael you are caving to a minority that is intimidating you TO CENSOR.

You are limiting free speech!

Was your first Nissan orange?

Is orange jello your favorite?

I'm with you though. It's unfortunate, but this is the world we live in today, and "why we can't have nice things".

I definitely crave depth in conversation more and more, especially in a world where attention spans and cognitive capacity are shrinking rapidly (and this is coming from a dude with "off the charts" ADHD). I deal with enough nice folks daily who want to constantly have surface level discussions about shit I don't care much about, no offense to them. I am grateful to have folks in the real world to engage in deeper and more meaningful conversations too, but there is a time and a place.

It was nice reading people's perspectives on things here, and being able to type out my own thoughts/opinions on topics like you mentioned above. Oh well.

More importantly, if the store didn't have orange jello in stock, what would you get instead?

I’m laughing at the implications made earlier in the thread. Those implying this was done to “silence them” during a period of time where they felt some sort of need to vindicate…well…they’ve gotta be screaming at their computer screens by now 🤣

The world is a funny place.

The world is a funny place indeed. Non-moto used to be a much more interesting place to talk shop, too.

Us adults couldn't have civil discussion about interesting topics very relevant to the world today. So here we are, talking about dessert. I am a milkshake dude myself. Riveting stuff I tell ya.
