Is supercross going global

Edited Date/Time 10/10/2026 1:09pm

Since WSX went south but some of guys are pivoting to AusX and SMX next partnering with AusX. Are we watching a move where supercross could go global. I think if they could build AusX up and have the top Aussie and Kiwi come to America and sell the video pass in Australia (if they don’t already). I think if this is a strategy it is going to take time but I think it’s easier than moving from country to country like WSX. I also think this could be repeatable in Europe and eventually South America. I think the goal would always be for the best foreigners to come race in America (So they can sell the video pass) but in the summer or fall they could go back home and represent in their home countries.

If its gonna go global the europeans are gonna have to get on board so theres enough riders for 2 series. How it was with wsx and sx both competing for the same pool of riders it wasnt gonna work. Mxgp can just do their own thing and do t have to try to squeeze in the off season or grab US riders, because they have their own separate pool of riders. The USA and europe are the 2 biggest dirt bike markets so europe will have to have their own sx in order to compete. Right now mxgp is losing all their riders to ama so they need to do something. They could start an sx series in just europe which would still be an international series and then over time they could expand it to farther and farther away places. Thats really the only shot for global sx, ama will never be a fully international series and it would be stupid for them to try.

Feld has said repeatedly that they want SMX to do international races.

Look at what they have done with Monster Jam, putting on shows all over the world. I would not be surprised if Feld developed series in other countries or forced SMX to travel overseas.

Expand the current SX series to Mexico City and Toronto and "go global" from there...OZ, Tokyo, London, Paris...etc, etc., etc.

And you might consider having it start like it does now, In January, and take a break during the GP season...and maybe pull our U.S. Nationals back into April...and then resume the SX series after the 2 outdoor seasons and MXoN are in the books.

As for adding dates? OK, fine; but, no more than 20 races and you ought to make a coupl'a those "double headers"...because, you're gonna be back to "making the year too long".

Over-all changes to the existing calendars:

MXGP goes from late April thru September w/ a total of 17 races (oh, and...make the new SX series an FIM sanctioned series to get the FIM and the European racing community onboard). Also, bring MXON back into September.

AMA Nationals late April thru September w/ a total of 12 races.

Supercross Jan - early April (12 rounds in N.A. & S.A. ...Sao Paolo?)  & October - November (8 rounds including places like Tokyo & OZ where you pull of some double headers).

SMX? Probably goes away and the TV package can slide over to the fall SX races.

Oh, and....YES! That's a lot of racing. 38 weekends For the Euro's doing it all and MXON & 33 weekends for U.S. racers doing it all plus MXON.

14 weekends off For Euros (More if you get the "dbl header" thing dialed)

19 weekends off for U.S. riders  (More if you get the "dbl header" thing dialed)

Don't know what this does for current events like Bercy...but, hell...Eric's race is LOVED by EVERYONE...so...make it part of the SX series! Same goes for OZ...get Adam on the phone...the hard part to all of this has already been done.

For a simple example...it could go like this.

Anaheim - Jan

San Diego - Jan

Glendale - Jan

Houston - Jan

Tampa - Feb

Detroit - Feb

Indy - Feb

Dallas - Feb

Daytona - March

Seattle - March

NY/NJ -March

Foxborough - March/Apr

MXGP/Nationals break

Tokyo - October

Melbourne - October

Sydney - October

Aukland - October

Sao Paolo - Oct/Nov

Paris - Nov

London - Nov

Berlin - Nov

Again, you can make a couple of these events "double headers" and that compresses the calendar and the logistics. I'd go with Tokyo, Sao Paolo or Paris...maybe one of the Aussie rounds...do it twice or 3 times...and you've REALLY helped on the logistics side for the teams...and even the promoters. You also given the racers 2-3 weekends back. Hell, when things calm down, you could go to the ME.

Signed,

Just a fan.

That is exactly what I was thinking. In Europe they would keep the rounds that are already successful like Paris and Geneva then add to places that would be popular like Spain. You could invite Prado and really blow it up. Then in smx next have their next gen stars and when their ready have them race lites in the us and come back to race in Europe every year.

I don’t see that happening due to how difficult wsx has had it but if they could build several different series and have contenders in each one come to the US it would help boost their video pass and it would be more like MXON where people come from all over their perspective series to see the superstars.

I like the idea of a ‘split season’, but the finale should probably be Anaheim II. With the current Angels ownership/management in place, there’s no real chance of them playing into October/November anyway!!!

They want to but its honestly about as smart as the nfl playing games in london. The nfl is doing it to try to expand to other markets, but it makes the actual product on the field worse and jacks up the players schedules. European football would be better if they had their own league vs the nfl trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Smx only being in the US actually has big advantages for running a series. The US is the size of a continent and has many different cities to choose from in different climates from tropical, to desert, to mediterranean climate, to temperate, to mile high, to mountainous…etc. There are dozens of baseball, football, and even soccer stadiums all around the country that are perfect for sx. All these tracks can be driven to with semi trucks which keeps shipping costs down, every track can be accessed without a passport, one currency, the max time zone difference between east coast and west coast is only 3 hours meaning no super late races or random hours of the day due to crazy time differences, the max flight youre gonna have is 6 hours when going coast to coast everything else is much less. The Americas are on the other side of the world from europe, asia, africa and getting to those places takes a long time. Instead of 6 hours being the maximum flight time, leaving the US 6 hours is the minimum flight time to get from boston to london. Imagine cali or florida to london, or cali to eastern europe…

Having everything within one country makes everything so much simpler, cheaper, and easier, feld throwing that away just to try to live up to the fake “world championship” name makes no sense. The US series is great, its a national series and thats ok. Let the FIM handle international supercross racing or start a separate series thats international, dont mess up the ama series. The only “international” races smx should ever consider would be within north America in canada or mexico. Anything beyond that needs to be a separate world supercross series. A separate series would need separate riders anyways so it only makes sense for it to be a europe centered series like mxgp.

All that, yet it’s a struggle to send a team to MXdN every year. Something’s not right.

They picked one of the cheapest stadiums in Columbus to race at. They’re not expanding to overseas. I’d rather see them in the newer NFL stadiums here

Exactly. The teams will never come up off all the extra millions that it will take to travel all over the world and Feld will NEVER pay any more than they absolutely have to.

Feld doesn't even bring in enough dirt to make an innovative, raceable track in the existing stadiums because, you know, Feld.

They don"t need to pick the best AusX Rider to América to sell the  SMX video pass in Australia, the best """"""SMX"""""" Rider of all time is Australian (might hurt some feelings to y'all)

Feld/MX Sports current business model cannot support internacional Racing/Growth, since:

-Teams are free to chose how to get to the races, dedicated truckers go across the country to get to the races, whereas in F1/MotoGP use trucks to get to the races in Europe, but for overseas races they have partner Up with Airlines (DHL for F1 and Qatar Airways for MotoGP) in order to transport the entire paddock in planes across the world, all AMA SMX Teams would need to partner Up and get an Airliner to move all the SMX Paddock around the world.

-The entire SMX series runs 31 weekends on 9 months, pretty much every single week from January to September, not much room to go back and forth to Europe/Asia/Oceanía, only would be possible on weeks before or after a "week off"

-"Real Football" leagues in Europe run through September to may, there aren't any football stadium to rent for a SX race in Europe (As the clubs wouldn't allow throwing Dirt into the stadium)

-AMA SX Teams are paid by the american branch of the OEMs, in order to promote the brands within the U.S, not elsewhere.

-Visas: How Many non-US Riders had problems going to Toronto/Vancouver rounds of SX? Didn't Dean Wilson missed one SX race due to this? And if the rumors of a certain U.S Rider that accepted the MXoN Seat after Hymas got injured but had to back out because he didn't have a passport...

As much as Feld tries It, SMX Will not have races outside the U.S in the short/medium term future...

This is what I was thinking about as well, the logistics alone makes going international for more than a round or two a non-starter. It would kill off privateer programs unless Feld came out of pocket to fund the freight, which I don't see happening.

There would have to be a major financial incentive for the teams in order for this to work.  The way the series is set up right now, Feld is simply the promoter, the AMA sanctions the racing, and the teams and riders are basically independent.  Feld would need to restructure in a way similar to other international racing organizations, and they might not want to do that, that would mean sharing some of the wealth.

Supercross in one of the Japanese baseball stadiums should be an easy layup for Feld. 100% guaranteed sell out, close proximity to the majority of OEM headquarters, and not to mention one of the sport’s top racers is Japanese. Should be a no brainer if you they want to do some races outside of the US.

the teams which pay the big money are funded out of USA marketing budgets,  Feld might try again, but the same issue will still apply,

Yeah. Let’s just make everyone go broke in 5 years with the expensive ass travel/hotel/shipping bikes etc. you seen airline and gas prices. This would kill off a lot of media and smaller teams

I like TeamGreen’s idea, especially the “doubleheaders” part. Two nights of points paying races means more money for the promoter and (a little) less travel for the teams. Just have to make sure it’s in an area with a lot of fans.

Be sick if mxgp had their own SX. Then instead of a gimmick SMX, we could have a 3-6 rounds global championship where the top 5-10 from each get to race

i think the best theyre going to do as for 'expanding' is growing the smx next banner. they have Ausx on board and next would be to establishi it in europe. but i doubt that will happen becasue of the FIM and Feld's long (negative) history.

holding an actual global series is great in theory but its very cost prohibitive and doesnt fit with the current SMX schedule and model. it would need to contract is length and reduce travel costs.

the way i see it the existing international single exhibition races like Paris-Bercy are the best way to go global. hold a few one of races in key markets. big riders end up traveling with less support (cheaper) and dont have to show up to each event

It’s a shame that WSX hasn’t had the success it could’ve/ should’ve.

Supercross is too good of a sport and too good of a tv package to just be an American domestic series, I know it has eyes on it from around the world but supercross deserves to be global.

I believe there is scope for every country to have their own domestic sx series and there to be a World Series like in motocross,

I realise currently majority of top talent is us based but as the sport grew globally the talent pool and the countries of origin of the riders would grow with it.

This might sound far out, India now have their own sx series and I’d be confident in 5-10 years we’d see an Indian rider who’d be capable of qualifying for an ama main, in line with their domestic serious gaining success and traction.

Thats how it starts, india has a domestic series now and in 10 years youll start seeing the kids who went to some of the races to watch start to turn pro. China had a sx series not sure if it still does. Europe needs to have its own 5 round championship to start getting young europeans riding sx.

The problem right now is all of the top sx riders on planet earth can only fill up a 22 man gate in the US domestic series. Theres not enough sx riders in the world to support both ama and a world championship right now. Wsx had to use ama riders to fill up the gate. Theres enough pro mx riders to race a full outdoor series in the US and Europe at the same time and have both series be world class. That just doesnt exist for sx yet.

Mxgp is losing all their talent to smx so in my opinion it would be smart for them to have a long term plan to mirror the US series with both mx and sx. To get there they need to invest in the next up coming talent now so theyre ready when its time to try again and foster a domestic series to gain experience.
