For me it is whomever is pushing the envelope of speed.
Some of the big hitters for me, McGrath, Tortelli, RC, JS7, Herlings, Beast mode!!, and Jett just makes it look like he is surfing going faster than anyone out there. True fan of them all. There have been a lot of bursts of speed by a lot more on this list like Dungey's ride at Southwick when he missed the start. That was awesome!! When they get into a situation like this and push themselves to go beyond their limits I do not care who it is, I need to see it!!!
I was a Dowd and Henry fan since they are locals. I was born in the late 70's and didn't follow the Pro side of the sport until Bradshaw started doing well. I was a fan of his . I started to watch races a little more and was going to Southwick every year from right around a year before RC started racing . Then as I started to follow it closer , racing myself locally and bringing friends to Nationals I saw RC and JS do some amazing things . RC, Stewart, Windham and Alessi were my early favorites.
Now that I've been following it for so long, I enjoy watching all of the riders. I was really into MTB's when John Tomac was the guy. So I followed Eli for his entire time racing and I've been a fan of his clean, but aggressive style. Barcia was a localish rider and was at a lot of local Southwick races early on so I was somewhat of a fan of his too since I watched him progress. Jimmy D , I watched him go from a little guy on a 65 jumping stuff that half the 450 B class was not jumping to being a top local guy and getting top 5s in SX. We used to hang out with Jimmy at local races for a while here and there. So I'll always be a fan of his.
There are so many amazing riders that I enjoy watching for different reasons. I would say Jett is my Favorite if I had to pick one. His style and also the comeback from the injury. But I'm also fans of Hunter, Roczen, the Coenen brothers, Deegan at times, Mostly the riders that will use their speed to win and not resort to knocking others down to stay in front of the other riders. Sexton can also be one of the guys I am happy to see get a win.
I think that all of the social media that is out there that shows us more of each racers personalities has really helped grow the sport as a spectator sport. You get to see so much that you never used to see.
I was a big fan Forkner, JMart, and ET. Been a rough go!
Hymas and Kitchen are PNW locals, and the haven't done anything I thought was douchey, so they've become my new favorites.
Jett. In 50yrs of watching MX I’ve never seen someone be so aggressive yet so patient at the same time and when he’s 100%, it looks like he’s riding an entirely different track than the rest of the field. Bonus points for being able to embarrass Deegan on one leg.
I was a big time Forkner fan.. the story of what could have been.. glad he got out ok though, he had some scary ones
Davalos.
On track: Jett, i like to be amazed when I watch the riders on track. And being the fastest rider in the world while looking like you are on a seight lap amazes me.
Off track I am a massive Hunter fan. Heck I also like Webb off the track now days.
Christophe Pourcel, because his approach to the sport was so radically different from anyone elses.
I was a Reed fan because he was simultaneously an underdog and a proven winner. Hunter is kind of filling that role for me now.
Maybe choosing Reed as my guy had something to do with my brother being a huge RC fan. Maybe😉
When I first starting following in the early 2000s, Carmichael was my guy since he had the setup dialed and won nearly everything around that time. As he went out, JS7 became my guy (mid to late 2000s) for his incredible speed and riding style even though I liked him in the 125 era (of course)...
In recent years, I like the Lawrence brothers (especially Hunter) the most along with Sexton. I hope Sexton gets it together this upcoming season and dial that Kawasaki in as he seems like a cool dude. I also like Shimoda in the 250s along with Hammaker as others here stated!
In different eras, for me it was RV2, ET3 and Bubba. With a cruel glint in my eye I watched RV2 swap out RD5 2 meters from the checkers at 2011 Steel City. The adrenaline surged for me any time at all ET3 entered Beast Mode, as when this happened the man was UNBEATABLE. Bubba was before my time, but he too was UNBEATABLE when his mojo was running.
I liked J-Mart, a bit of a goof-ball, I wished he was afforded the chance to race the premier class, the man was FAST.
Not just a champion, a GREAT champion! I took this photo of him coming around just before the checkers at RedBud his 450 Champion 2016.
Apart from Rick Johnstone when I was a kid, I've subconsciously always cheered for the underdog; Windham, Reed, Roczen, and Hunter, at different times.
Pit Row
Stewart then Dung then Eli now kinda no one. As an Aussie I do like watching Jett ride but I have noticed I enjoy the sport better without have a “guy” I can just enjoy the racing and get less broken hearted when a racer gets injured. It’s a tough sport to watch your “guy” get rag dolled. It’s more of a matter of survival than anything. So if I just follow everyone then there is less disappointment!
Billy bolt. And through his channel, Tommy searle.
I was a big Chad reed fan because he was the underdog and I always wished it would be the race that he could flat out run with James or Ricky. The reality is that they were almost always faster.
I never liked Ricky that much because I was a McGrath guy. I still really appreciate the greatness that James Stewart brought from a riding and innovation perspective. He didn't win as much as he should have but there are kids who will never understand how incredible he was and what he did for the sport
I became a huge Pourcel fan because I saw him race outdoors in person in the pc days and it was an incredible experience. I always wished his career turned out differently
I mostly rooted for Eli in his era but I found it to be a frustrating experience. He won a lot but he should have won so much more
Herlings has been my favorite overall in the last 15 years because I just think he's probably the most badass guy who has maybe ever done it
