There's no shortage of trails in WV, over 1000 miles in the Hatfield McCoy system.
+Burning Rock (hosted a national enduro this year)
+Dozens of Current and Former GNCC properties
atleast 2 popular harescramble series (NECXC and MSHS)
Man, Josep Garcia sure does run those bars basically in his lap. Such a unique riding style too. Just sitting on the tank and power sliding the rear end.
Allegheny National has over 2000 miles of forest roads, logging and mining paths within it's borders.
I’m heading to Hatfield this Thursday for a few days. The only problem with that area is there’s literally nothing around. I don’t know where everyone would stay, as there aren’t many hotels. There are some great Air bnb’s around there, but not nearly enough to accommodate that many people. There’s Ivy branch trail system isn’t too far from Charleston WV, but that’s mainly ridden by UTV’s, jeeps, and quads. To get to the good dirt bike trails you have to head a couple hours south to the Rockhouse, Devils Anse, and Buffalo mountain trails. It’s a whole different world down along the WV/Kentucky border. Miles upon miles of slum and nothingness.
I think if they were to host it in America it would have to be out West...and it would be a desert ISDE. Think high desert SoCal/Lucerne Valley...with those flat desert valley's with 500 miles of lathe and ribbon marking the tests....and using the single track/fire roads as transfer sections. Weather would cooperate this time of year too...right off I-15 for easy access, plenty of parking, close to LA (airports and major ports for shipping bikes) and all the US based manufacturer headquarters, It would be awesome!
But the fun hating, environmentalists would probably put a stop to it with endless law suits...
It’s still very nice on most of the east coast this time of the year. PA and the northern states can be hit or miss, but a lot of the time it’s still in the 50’s and 60’s. Mid-Southern WV, NC, VA, SC, GA, TN, KY, etc. Most of the eastern states are still in the mid 60’s to mid 70’s through October. It’s 80 degrees in Pittsburgh area today, and low to mid 70’s for the next couple days. Next week dips down into the mid to upper 60’s, which is fantastic riding weather. Obviously you can get bad weather anywhere any time of the year, but overall we still have solid weather on the east coast in most of October.
Infrastructure for lodging and parking is the biggest deal after trail access.
The Snowshoe WV resort has over 1,400 condominium and lodge rooms distributed across the mountaintop village, slopeside properties, and base areas.
Pahrump, Nevada Northwest of Las Vegas has the capacity to host an ISDE from the Pahrump Nugget Casino.
Ask Jimmy Lewis if roads and trails are feasible from Pahrump. Plenty of room for special tests.
There's a new riding area right outside of Charleston WV called Appalachian outlaw trails. Mostly just single track and harder stuff at the moment, but they are in the process of building sxs/atv/and jeep trails. There is also a huge, sick riding spot very close to the same area but not sure of legalities of that land. Throw in some rail trail/gravel roads for connectors and they could map out one hell of a course there with all the amenities close by.
I think it's important to keep in mind that this type of riding isn't too popular in the US yet. The US Sprint Enduro series is growing a bit and really fun to go do. I'm glad to see them expanding to different states this past year. I think the year or two before it was mostly MD, Carolina's and maybe Georgia. Most of the NEPG/ANEC, regional enduro series are pretty tight and quite a bit of a different format to this. It's so fun to watch Joseph, Verona, perrson, pichon etc. They are just animals on the bike and have a bit different technique. Josep's vision and alternate lines are always incredible to watch. The dust looks intolerable this year though. Grant Davis had a monster day 2 today; and our US women's team is incredible.
Anyone read that some of trophy guys were waiting a little tooo long at the starting line for the dust to calm down?
Pit Row
A good listen is Jesse Ziegler and Quinn 'Wallace' * Cody from Cycle News.
They are doing a daily show doing a run down on the ISDE, and they do a good job - just as they do with the Dakar.
Quinn's done both the Dakar, and the Six Days, himself.
Plus, he looks just like Wallace, from Wallace and Gromit! Especially when he smiles / grins or grimaces!
They discuss that on the Cycle News 'cast.
There's always a fair bit of shuffling / gamesmanship with Special Test starts, but it was suggested it was more than that - officials realizing the dangers of being so unsighted that they widened the start gaps, and that s t r e t c h e d out things, introducing a bit more chaos than is 'usual'.
Cripes, those Specials, and the trails, must be getting so, So carved up / bottomless with near on 500 riders, going through them 4 or more times!
It is what it is - always has been.
Hard effing work!
To watched these people just hammering , at mind boggling speed, is just So Bloody Awesome!
I would guess there’s probably 0% chance it would be in California. The bikes need to be street legal, no way CA is going to let 500+ race bikes ride on an inch of pavement without full smog systems, DOT tires, proof of insurance, motorcycle endorsements on licenses, ect. Let alone the environmentalists trying to sue to keep it from happening when they figure out the damage 500+ bikes do to a special test after riding it 2 days in a row 2 times a day.
Would be a lot cooler if they got it to happen though
From Radio Paddock :
At around 10 minutes, you see / hear a Swede talking to, I assume, an Official, saying something like "increase the gaps - you see this one and that one, you see absolutely " ( nothing?). The official, in among that, says "tomorrow it will be better". So, they may increase start gaps, but that, of course will further lengthen the day.
This, from me, is Not Complaining , it's what you have in dry conditions - it's just Sympathy for riders, as I've dealt with such Dust all my riding life, and been in Enduros / Events where you can't see a bloody thing. It scares the crap out of me, the things I've done in such conditions.
Air Filters - can you imagine how many that are being gone through each day, by near on 500 riders? ! !. If there's 'people' assigned to filter cleaning for teams, they must be living a Complete Bloody Nightmare this week. 🥵
Yet, you see how bloody Pinned these riders are - amazing stuff!
Day 3 SP1 canceled because of the dust. Situation is very bad. Mickael Pichon asked his son to be very careful because it's too dangerous.
Watching Day 3 morning show right now - Meo and Igor (with his Mullet, he looks like a bloody Aussie Bogan !) walking around, getting to the US Women's tent.
They have are having a great set of interactions with the US Woman. They were great, especially Ratchel
A bloke just said to them that " they are a Lot calmer with you guys around " I half expected them to tell them off.
Now the French.
And now - The Bloody Kiwis - NooooaaaaH ! One of them is doing the clutch - 10 minutes to do so in the morning - nowadays I'd take a couple of days to do such a thing - well, tyres too ....... 🙄
No relief for the weary.
Garcia's valve train should be put in the louvre 😂
this is so sick
