A few random thoughts:

  • We may never see Ken run the 94 again.
  • These assigned numbers may never get put on a plate: 1W, 3, 14, 11, 33, 58, 97, 99
  • Coenen bros score respectable inaugural national numbers (64/79) running just 3 or 4 motos.
  • Interesting that apparently Prado is the first rider to select #61 as an official permanent career number in AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross history.

Is Chisholm really really retired now?

Davies is going to look really good with number 5. Interesting that Ryder D is taking 10 instead of 22 which was previously reported.

Am I missing something?  Why would he not run #5 in SX and MX?

Davies shouldn’t get a career number yet either imo.
But Ryder D getting one is a stronger example of why the current system sux. A top ten career number, that you can carry into the premier class, without even winning a race in the 250 class is just plain wrong.

Davies won a national title, what else should he do to qualify?

I don’t feel that 250 results should qualify you for a top ten career number in the premier class.
But that’s just me.

As an example of the riders being pushed down from their actual finishing position in the new SMX series by earned and favorite numbers and combining both classes

Benny Bloss finished in 22nd place overall in the final standings of the 2026 SuperMotocross (SMX) World Championship 450 class.

For 2027 Benny has been assigned # 54.

Just my own subjective opinion, but I find it kinda lame when someone like Ryder D chooses #10 instead of the #23 he had as an amateur. It's like instead of having any kind of individuality they just pick the lowest number they can. I always liked Roczen running #94 through his career even when he could have run a single digit.

I believe he would love to run 199 if he could .

Earned numbers should be used from the previous years ranking. That way we could tell where a partcular rider finished the previous season.

Sponsors invest in metrics, progression, and visibility. if a rider could switch to their actual earned number, it would tell a clean, linear story of their career progression (e.g., moving from #42 to #12 to #5). It would prove to potential backers that they are climbing the proverbial ladder and give riders a clear quantifiable metric of their growth in the sport.

Preserving Racing Tradition:
From the historic AMA Grand National Championship to local club racing, the tradition of the #1 plate and earned numbers is deeply rooted in motorcycle culture. Actual earned numbers would establish a clear, respected hierarchy on the starting line.

How many riders actually progress year to year?

The permanent number system is way more suited to marketing and branding opportunities, not to mention ease of identifying riders on the track.

Numbers as branding is a questionable concept in racing. I have no idea what number Lewis Hamilton runs. But, I can pick him out of a photo, know who his sponsors are, etc.—-which is the essence of branding. Numbers cross over various sports—-and name and image are what sells. McGrath sells stuff—not the number “2”. Same for Villlo. Carla, Robert, DeCoster—none of them needed a number for branding.

I’m just here to complain about how the AMA rule that forces the Championship winner, but no one else, to wear their finishing number from the prior season. I wouldn’t even know what career number Carmichael was with the amount of winning he did. Good thing this rule was put into effect after his retirement.
I’d prefer KR and everyone else choose.

I don’t think 250 SX points should count towards anything, but winning a 250 national title should get you a songle digit or permanent number imo. Lammy got the 6 from it, Langston got the 8 from it, Tedesco got the 9 from it as well as AC, brownie got the 3 from it. Out of those guys only Langston would win a 450 title, but I don’t have a problem with those guys single digit number. 250 SX point going towards your number is lame imo tho.

Lucas Coenen finished 35th overall in the 450 SMX class, while his twin brother Sacha Coenen finished 33rd overall in the 250 SMX class for the 2026 SuperMotocross (SMX) 'World Championship'.

The Coenen brothers have committed to a full SMX schedule with Red Bull KTM for 2027, where they will contest the entire AMA Supercross, Pro Motocross, and SMX postseason series full-time.

They were assigned numbers 64 and 79 in 2027 after racing just several rounds in '26. If the new SMX series had a valid numbering system they should be #35 for Lucas in the 450 class and #33 for Sasha in the 250 class.

So you would prefer to finish 22nd overall and be assigned #54 ?

This AMA numbering system makes no sense.

They came up with this new SMX 'World Championship' for the 250 and 450 classes, tracked the points for both classes and only assigned a #1 plate for the new series.

A better system would be to get rid of earned numbers and favorite numbers.

Assign numbers in EACH class by the actual finishing position for the SMX series in each class.

The way it is now with Earned numbers and favorite numbers riders are pushed down the list and assigned a number higher than their actual earned finishing position for the 'World Championship'.

Combiining the 250s and 450s for National numbers makes zero sense as most of those riders never raced each other.

Give a different colored plate to the #1's in SX and MX

Flame on...

ando wrote:

But what about relative positioned earned in SX and MX for each class?  Should a rider have a different number for each series?

The SMX 'World Championship' combines the SX and MX points into one series.

Our beef is combining the 250 and 450s in the same points structure when those classes are clearly 2 separate divisions.

And the 'chosen' earned numbers pushing actual season earned numbers further down the list from their previous season 'earned number'.

And when someone says I am retiring they give up their 'chosen earned number'.Ala Tomac and the Frenchman.

So it woildnt be a big deal if he had picked number 22 instead of number 10.. and 2027 should be the first year Deegan would be able to pick the number 38

IMO neither gets to pick a career number until earned in the premier class.
However, just not counting regional SX points would be more acceptable.
