Did a stroll down memory lane when our family went to Top Golf in El Segundo last weekend. We were hitting balls where I was once hitting jumps. To you South Bay people out there , we used to ride from Marine to El Segundo blvd , east of Sepulveda. Manhattan beach was a cool place to grow up for this older dude.
Before and after. The big oval shapes were cement oil storage reservoirs that were somewhere around 40 or 50 feet high and several blocks long. They broke the ends off when they were no longer in use to keep them from filling with water
before my time. Our tracks were between and around them. This is where Manhattan Village currently is. Pic is from the early ‘70’s.

Hard to believe this is 52 years ago on my 74TM125 in the early days of learning how to Cross Up, which was considered a big deal back then! 😂
Like most of you when I walked out the door no telling where I might end up or when I might be back. But one big difference I remember is the smoking. We could smoke at school, on the bus, at lunch break. The teachers smoked with us and my family doctor smoked during visits. We were getting high as hell on the bus rides 😅 but no hot teachers. And that’s before I ever hit middle school. Everybody smoked.
Another fond memory is having a vehicle that usually wouldn’t hold $10 worth of gas. And access I miss the places we had access to then. General admission concerts and the carnage that ensued. I remember Dee Snider of TS stopping the show and having the house lights turned on and calling out my buddy for hitting him in the head with a Jim beam bottle. I snuck my first groupie home before I even had a drivers license.
I am so damn grateful I come up before the interwebs and social media.

Hell yeah. Spun many laps around that crappy track , and loved every minute of it. I met my wife there back in 1981 and we are still together . Whenever I want a new bike , I remind her where we met 🤣
There was also that little gem called, Jackrabbit.. Right next to the 405 fwy and, across from the Goodyear blimp.
Been there . We also rode at 190th and Prarie and the pit where Hawthorne started to go up into PV. Heard about good tracks up in Rolling Hills, but never rode em. As late as’88 we rode a track in Malibu. Those days are long gone.
Probably about 20 years ago I was dropping off my parents at LAX. On the way home I thought I'd buy mom and dad a couple of tickets to go up in the blimp. So I stopped there but they told me they don't do that. But, they did let me go sit in it. So technically I was flying in the blimp as it is always kept off the ground. 🤣

A track in Malibu? Damn, you Cali guys had them everywhere. I was so envious back in the day.
For you guys, who aren’t familiar with the area,Chance grew up on the left side of that hill in
the background and Sumdude started his run at the right side of the hill that you can’t see.Speaking of which, anyone remember Marineland ? I remember seeing the marine animal shows when I was a kid, and getting busted for partying there once it closed down as a teen The hill is what we refer to as PV (Palos Verdes ) even though it’s a few different cities up there.
off topic - You're hammering that 82 - many people gave that bike low marks, but I really liked mine.
We had it so good growing up in the west San Fernando Valley/Simi/Moorpark/Thousand Oaks/Agoura/Malibu area. Literally tracks everywhere. Santa Clarita/Newhall/Valencia was a close second.
Then the mid- to late 90's and all that housing expansion and boom, it was over.
SeaWorld was the field trip destination back my day.
Can't remember if I ever went to Marineland.
Mt Helix was our late night party/ sexcapades area. As well as the Presidio parking lot, and woods, overlooking the mouth of mission valley.
I definitely remember Marineland. It's been gone a long time.
Palos Verdes = Knots Landing. 🤣
When I worked in Torrance we would take lunch "excursions" and hike down to the SS Dominator wreck in PV (what was left of it). Knock back a few beers and return to work to flirt with the secretaries.
This is about all that was left in the 90's.

There was another little track right by my old house in Harbor City.
It was between the baseball fields and, Navy housing right off Palos Verdes Dr N. Cops never bothered me because I’d coast down the hill to it and, pushed the bike back home. Was never screaming up the street like a lot of others did.
It’s all overgrown now but, it was definitely fun. Outlined the best I can remember
I played B-ball in 7th and 8th grade. Our practice was before school so one of the coaches would give a few of us a ride to school. This was an 8mi trip in the bed of his Datsun, before sunrise, during the winter at ~8500’ in the CO rockies. Cold, very cold.
Had to laugh at the “we fab’d our BMX bikes…” comment. Mine started as a Schwinn Stingray, orange if I recall correctly. I probably rode that bike everyday for years on end.
A cousin and I had a couple mile ride on a dirt mtn road to a point where we could hide our bikes in some sage brush. From there it was over two miles of fishing/hiking down a creek to where it reached a river and the real trout were. Spend the day fishing, then hike/bike home. My mom would give me a sandwich for the day and I just drank directly out of the creek. Pretty sure I never heard of water purification. We’d make it back by dark.
Different times for sure.
