When I was a hopeful C class racer in AMA District 7 too many years ago, I would line up against the fence to watch the A class do battle. Partly to try to learn something but mostly because they just blew me away with their effortless speed and courage. And I admit that while I was leaning into the possibility that I, too, would be in the A class one day, what I really felt was a little bit of envy. I was jealous of their skills, their equipment, their coolness… the whole nine yards.
I think, as fans, we may be harboring a little bit of that jealousy towards today’s top racers. I don’t mean this in a bad way; largely we admire what these guys (and gals) have been able to accomplish. And when we watch them enjoy the fruits of their success… factory rides, million dollar contracts, fancy homes, gorgeous spouses… we might have that little “Dang, I wish that were me” thought pop up occasionally. I think that is probably a common fan experience. Agree?
how can one be jealous if one is too old to race or not be proficient enough to race these guys? i don't think jealousy has anything to do with it. like someone posted previously regarding the dangerboy - poster didn't like him because the poster thought he was an asshole. i gave the post a thumbs up.....
Jealousy might not be the best word for it, but as an older person (lol), I can admit being envious of not only the great skills on display, but also of the age advantage they have.
I love seeing riders enjoying the fruits of their labor at the highest levels because it proves that this is a sport worth pursuing and risking your life for. It would suck if the Lawrence brothers were poor and living in a trailer park as good as they are.
(I'm a District 7 fossil too- Antietam, Happy Ramblers, White Oak, Aquasco to name a few. Epic times...)
I am the opposite.
I am glad that i got to enjoy all the great things about the sport, without the pressure of having to turn up and perform to someone elses expectations.
Thats why i still race at 61, because i can, and i dont care about anything other than having a good time at the weekend.

Not at all. In my life I have had the opportunity to work with many ultra-successful people. And just like pro MXers they became ultra-successful because they were willing to put in the work, have the vision, the stubbornness, and make sacrifices, most people including me were not willing to do. I marvel at this, not envy it. Human beings are capable of anything, if they are driven and motivated enough.
Hell no…..hard way to make a living….one mistake and your broke….phone stop ringing…
I love moto, but there is not one person anywhere in that industry making me jealous.
