It seems a little apples to oranges to me when talking about paying an established team for a spot or owning your own team with outside sponsors like HoT. Kilbarger is actually making spots for riders who probably otherwise wouldn't be on the gate.

Can't blame the team managers in these challenging financial times for hiring someone who can bring a chunk of change to the table. It's been this way in most motorsport car racing formula's & championships for many years, inc F1.

Has there been any riders either past or present who got themselves a ride on the AMA circuit by what they could put into the team?
thats the way it works in cart/indy cars

I'm sure it was subsidised some. I think it was all about Monster getting into australia and sponsoring the super x series. They couldnt exactly do that while Reed was riding a rockstar suzuki.

A friend of mine used to race in blackfoot honda and he payed X money to be on the team he raised the money with sponsors of his country to pay to be in the team i think it was like 100K a year! he used to race the AMA like 4 or 5 years ago!

I know someone very well who is riding for Rockwell this weekend on a 450... Trust me, he isn't paying to be on that team. That's not to say that they pay there riders there either...
