Forum vs In Person

We have a lot of threads that devolve. I was just in another thread and being the dummy I am, I hijacked it into something it wasn't. On the forum, it's proper etiquette to stay on topic. And then we get into devolving debates because the same point gets hammered on. In real life person to person, unless you are actively having a meeting about a particular topic, the conversation rarely goes in a straight line. Someone makes a comment which triggers a different direction to another participant and the conversation instantly takes a hard right turn. Somedays, the conversation goes full circle and back to a topic, but probably hit 20 topics before that happens. So do the threads devolve because we are forced to maintain the topic? Why do we do that to ourselves? Do you find it more entertaining on the forum trying to maintain a topic or in person where the topics run wild? I get that would not work on the forum for most things, but why do we never do a random thread that just evolves with no specific topic? It doesn't even have to tie into what's being discussed.

Threads typically have a way of going off in different directions. Sometimes multiple different conversations are going on between posters.

It's become the norm these days.

Your conversation about a common riding area wasn't a big deal.

Getting an early start and trying to get my shop work done by noon lately.

I am the absolute worst on here for those 90 degree thread turns.  It's exactly like you said...I treat this place like I would if we were bullshitting in the garage, drinking beer.  Never know where the convo is gonna go but it's usually interesting and fun.  I do have someone that down votes all my comments so I guess I pissed in someone's cornflakes.  Ya can't please everyone.

What kind of beer? Maybe they down vote you because they're Neer Beer drinkers 🤣

I just farted a dog off a couch.

And I wasn't even sitting on it.

One person can fuck up a whole neighborhood/message board/chat when others entertain that persons negativity.

It is surprisingly easier to do this then keep a friendly, interactive culture that invites people to be themselves.

It is why we should all cherish when we are in an environment devoid, for the most part, of negativity.

Recognize it for its rarity and protect it for as long as possible.

I like it when a thread goes south and Chance comes to the rescue with some chick pics 🤣

I'm getting a, planet Tyrus, segment on the link.

Which is all good because his conversations with people are great.

True.

There's a local board where our cabin is located, and some crotchety old fart (jeremy) that wanders around the neighborhood, like some hoa karen, is a regular agitator.

Then gets online, invading a current thread, griping about things in the neighborhood that don't meet his standards.

The admin created a sticky called simply, "jeremy". And places everything he posts in his own little thread. Much like the dumbgeon. Pissed the old fart off, and now decent conversations can be had without him invading, yelling at clouds.

So many times I've wanted to do that here, flooding threads with pictures of vintage race cars, bikes, etc...

But Chance has mastered that move.

It’s the natural progression of any conversation.  Someone says something that reminds you of something and back and forth and round and round. Just the way it goes on line and in person.

There's a guy (R Bird) on the local North County board that lives near Palomar airport and all he does is complain about the air traffic. He moved there knowing there's an airport.

Some people cannot find joy in their own life so they need to make other people miserable so they feel more level with everyone. The beauty of a fast moving conversation is you can pivot away for that as soon as they start with their drivel making them irrelevant.

The bears are there to let folks know that the topic/thread has died.  It is an ex thread...deceased...no longer alive.

Had the usual gang around this weekend.

Both in the cabin, and down the road at the usual campsite.

I sat back and listened to conversations, and how they were constantly morphing, about the time the third, or fourth, person added their two cents.

Especially if it was something that had everyone laughing.

Pretty much every time, on any subject.
