Decoster thinks the 350 is better for outdoors

KTM just need a WINNER on that bike! Short makes for an awesome, consistent B rider for any team but he's never going to set the world on fire - on any bike. And god knows whats going on with Alessi, again, expect his bizarre meltdown would be occurring on any bike too. Its just Roger's bad he's locked into a 2 year deal. If RV or Stewart were riding the 350 we'd all be talking about it now like a completely different bike. Or even Canard/Reed/Dungey.. with the new competition, Short is around about where he should be in the pecking order and Alessi is a fruit cake.

I take that back, if Dungey was on the 350 some of you guys would have a field day and claim he'd be winning straight up on the RMZ450. And.. remember how last years stinking pile of turd was the KXF 450? That thing seems to be doing OK this year.

Doesn't a 250 2t put out roughly the same hp as the 350 and is 25 lbs lighter. Then I would take the 2t any day of that pig. Now if comparing to the 450's the 2t has no chance at the pro level.

I think Villopoto would do good on a 350.

The 350 is going to be great for amateurs like us. Revability but not as powerful as a 450 will suit many riders, especially those not as fit as faster riders. But......

KTM have shot themselves in the foot by promoting it over the 450 when both riders probably could be doing as well if not better with the 450. The amount of time spent on the 350 to make it race ready and competitive could of been spent on the 450.

I just think the marketing of the 350 could of gone down a different path, one which didn't affect the US riders as much. Let the GP riders run it and keep the 450 for a bit longer so KTM can get a good name in factory racing in the US. We all know the rules on what is legal in Europe and what is illegal in the US is worlds apart.

Roger is repeating the factory mantra. A 350 can undoubtedly turn fast times on a clear track, but you put a guy on a 350 on the gate with the knowledge that he's probably not going to get a great start, and all race he's going to be blocked in turns and out-dragged on straights, up hills and in deep dirt by 450s. It's a big disadvantage, and on the pro level, even small disadvantages are tough to overcome. On the local level, it'd be all different, I'm sure.

Not to change the subject but does anyone know if the 500's had better laps times outdoors than the 250's? I really miss that class.

When the best riders were in the 500 class, they did - later on when the best riders were in the 250 class, not so much. But if you'd mixed the classes and run them together, I'm sure most riders would have opted for a 500. Back in the late 70s, we'd occasionally have races when there weren't enough A riders to fill both the 250 and open gates so we'd run together - I was usually riding a 250 until the last couple of years, and it was really tough, especially the roost...

Its a shame that KTM didn't employ Vital MX know it alls to run the team in 2011 instead of that DeCoster guy.

If Short, Alessi and Roczen were riding the 450 last week, they would have gone 1, 2, 3.

As a casual fan I'm a bit confused....

1. Doesn't the AMA have a rule on how light bikes in each class can be regardless if it's a 350cc or 450cc bike ? Aren't the 450's right at that limit? If so doesn't that just throw out the argument of the 350 being lighter out the window for the purposes of pro supercross racing?

2. I don't know, but I'm assuming the rules for bike set up are different in Europe than US. So are the 350 engines in Europe the same as the 350 engines in the US that race outdoors and supercross here in the US?

No you are wrong. Looks like you don`t pay attention of what`s going on here. 350 is 250 pound pig with 26 HP and can not pull any holeshot`s. As for Cairoli - he just got lucky. Alessi cheated his win by hiding in a bushes for a lap and then pulling out in front of everybody ( I hear Tony hacked the timing system). Bikes in Europe are designed by NASA and runs tuning that space shutles doesn`t get, and ama bikes are stock bikes with flashy stickers and americans win , well, because they`re superior at everything. Next question.

I have been saying this for awhile. My reasoning is that in supercross low end power is more important and high speed handling is not important. Outdoors a lighter bike handles a lot better at high speed and the tracks are more wide open where you can keep a the engine wound up and in the horsepower.

In my opinion, the smaller the track the better for a 450......sounds crazy, but 450's don't feel heavy at low speed. Where they feel heavy is on 40 mph rutted choppy straights.

This is just my observation from riding 450's and 250F's.

Villopoto wiped the floor with everyone on a 250 at Budds Creek, Roczen was passing 450s for fun at Colorado in September and I've watched Searle among others, place inside the top 5 in other MXdN races.

The 350 is a good bike, you just need to learn how to ride it to maximise its potential. The transition from 250 - 350 should theoretically be quite a natural step, whereas swapping from a 450 to a 350 will surely take time to adjust due to the riding habits you've become accustomed to onboard a big bike.

What's to stop them from running 400+cc's, say 425 in those 350's, but still claim it's a 350 to the public?

It is all relative and in the right conditions I am sure that the 350 will be great but when it comes to some of the deep, sandy, hilly National tracks like Millville and Red Bud I know which bike I want to be on!

Everyone that works for ktm says that the 350 is better or it gives them an advantage. If shorty has to ride the 350 this year for outdoors i don't think he will come close to as good as he did last year. He will be getting Beat by MA800 if he is on a 450. the can leave the 350 in Europe. Matthes thinks that the 100cc loss for them isn't helping a bit and i would agree.

this guy has a very good point. They keep talking about how its so light it gives them an advantage but with the weight limmits they have the same weight and half the motor i don't care what they say but how is have less better in this situation?

One aspect that you guys can't discount is the fatigue factor. I was talking to a guy at the track last weekend and he was on the 350. He said he had an 09 450sx and that the 350 didn't give him arm pump or wear him out nearly as much.

When it comes time for the nats and 90+ deg. and 80% humidity for 30+2 x 2 it will be a factor no doubt.

If you had an ama national with RV, JS and MA all on factory 450's, yeah JS and RV finish 1- 2...as the 2 fasted MX riders on the planet, MA would ONLY finish 3rd on a 450 zook, so he sucks.. Okdoky...In Stewarts perfect season, only Alessi kept him close and even led some laps, but thats no big deal. Afterall JS is so far above the rest of the world, he completed a perfect season.

Mike went from being arguably the greatest Holeshot artist in the history of the sport, indoors and out, to ZERO holshots on a 350.
But Oh no! its not the bike!, his incredible holeshot ability just "happened" to vanish the same year he switched to a 350. Okdoky.

Now one may say, yeah but Short, a b rider, is beating Mike now. um...Have you seen Mike Alessi's reaction to finishing 2nd to the greatest rider in the world in the nationals? He was miserable!, because Mike is programmed to do one thing, Win

So, when he lines up to race knowing he has no chance to holeshot, or pass a dozen 450's, he is demoralized. Finishiing in the top ten and developing a bike, and being happy with that isn't what Mike Alessi is about.

Now look at Shorts reaction to finishing 5th, 6th etc...the dude is always smiling from ear to ear. I used to like him, but it kinda makes me sick now. It doesn't bother him because he has never won, and isn't a winner. He is just happy to be a professional test/development rider and cash his cheques and retire with lots of money and good health. He will finish his career with ZERO 450 wins.

Alessi was an absolute stud on a 450 outdoors, (or is 3rd in the world no good?) and even tho he is so shitty indoors, he has podiumed on a 450.

But yeah...the problem isn't the bike, No sir, ..its Alessi, he simply lost all his talent, forgot how to holeshot, and ride like an animal outdoors. Okdoky.

As most of you already know, I think Roger is a fantastic team manager, but in my personal opinion, that doesn't give him an automatic "He's the man and is always right" card. With that said, I agree with him on this one.

The 350 is perfect for indoors. Giving up that 100cc outdoors is a big disadvantage.

The 'everyone' you're talking about would be Stewart and Villopoto Im guessing (who wouldn't have both been in that particular race together, but anyway) but lets remember... Villopoto won two races on his 250 at Budds Creek. Against Ricky Carmichael on no less. The point is, that lower displacement bikes have proven numerous times that they can compete against the almighty 450. If you can win on a 250, you can surely win on a 350... as Cairoli has. "Oh but Cairoli's bike wasn't a '350..." Really? Show me some evidence that it wasn't, because otherwise its just speculation, either way.

I find it fascinating that people (and Im not specifically mean you jms) choose to take such a negative stance on this whole 350 thing. To the people who try and shoot it down, why does it matter to you sooo much? It seems some people view it as some sort of insult to their own intelligence. So the bike is down 100cc... do you HONESTLY think, all the issues raised by the haters on here haven't been taken into consideration by KTM? Do you not think KTM had countless meetings to discuss the project from top to bottom, not to mention riders such as Stefan Everts, a 10 time world champion who has spent years mulling this idea over. If Short and Alessi didnt want to ride the mike, if its ruining Alessi's career and making him so miserable, they have a choice to do something about it, so let them instead of assuming you know whats best for them.

If after a few years they concede that it hasn't quite achieved the potential they were hoping for, and revert back to the 450 for professional racing, will you applaud them for their innovative approach, for at least having the balls to attempt something different, or will you sit back and say 'Ah ha, told you so!'? Because if its the latter I would suggest that for a Motocross enthusiast, that would be pretty lame.

There is quite obviously a stigma attached to KTM in America, and I for one am finding it quite interesting to watch the public perception change already. Before you know it KTM will probably be the leading manufacturer in the world, if its not already and most of you will probably even own a 350 in 5-10 years time.

I agree. I can't understand why everyone keeps knocking the bike. KTM is having their best season to date. Short is currently in 6th place, and keeps getting better each week. Alessi seems to be improving as well. The field is thick this year. My only question is if the riders were really given the choice of the 350 or 450.

The KTM is great and a welcome alternative to the Jap domination,I would like to see a top 4 or 5 pilot on one to see its true potential, who knows maybe Cairoli could squeeze a National in during the season, that'd be cool,I think he'd win races in AMA without a doubt

Okdoky.
Been saying this, the same thing as karma since the start.

Doesn't a 250 2t put out roughly the same hp as the 350 and is 25 lbs lighter. Then I would take the 2t any day of that pig. Now if comparing to the 450's the 2t has no chance at the pro level.
Why deosnt ktm feild a 250sx 2 stroke? if 5 pounds is enough of an advantage to give up the hp the 25 pounds surely would right.?
