While I was driving to the supply house, I was having my fairly new apprentice write down a list before we got there. He gave me the list and he did a good job…. Only one mistake….. he wrote down 2” cuplinks. I died laughing and told him it sounded like a a Hostess Goodie. Same apprentice….. while we were driving to the job once The Janis Joplin song, Bobby McGee came on. After the song was over he told me…… “ I like that Kentucky Coal Mine song” I died laughing and for months after I would say to him in a thick southern accent “ I like that Kentucky Coal Mine Song” then I’d start singing it to him and really highlight  the Kentucky Coal Mine part! He thought it was hilarious when I’d start singing! Lots of fun 🤣

Back then covering the presidential race meant it was highly likely you were working for a major news organization as a senior correspondent, they weren't hiring rando dropouts for that role.

There were a few senior reporters but most were beat reporters working for AP or other news cooperatives as most local news sources did not have a Washington bureau. Bottom of the food chain. It doesn't matter though. The fact that the mainstream press was left of center was not deniable and the survey I cited shows it.  Are you saying they were not biased? Because your data does not disprove the claim. Many reporters from the era eventually admitted as much. Whether or not that situation still exists at the network or local newspaper level I couldn't tell you. I stopped watching network news in the 90's and nobody reads newspapers. Mainstream press, academia and Hollywood all veer sharply left. It's something that the left really needs to stop denying. They sound ridiculous.

Your right the press corp in Washington is leaning left just a bit off center. That being said it doesn’t mean that you can’t get good information. Or that because a news media leans left or right it’s bad info. For me if I look at something I really want to know about or care about , I try and get all side, then I make my mind up. If you only want to believe things that reinforce your belief system, it’s not helping you. Like social media the algorithm give you thing you believe not what’s factual. We all have bias.  As far as the higher the education you have the more left leaning you become, I  curious what you think is the reason behind that?  On the news a good site to look at is ground news  it show multiple articles from left, right and center news, it’s then easy to see who is applying there bias onto it.

The chicken or the egg question. Were they indoctrinated in college or after they got on the beat? I'm going with college. And for any of you that have had kids go off to college and seen the transformation..............

" As far as the higher the education you have the more left leaning you become, I  curious what you think is the reason behind that?"

I'll take a crack at it.

First of all,  you don't gain wisdom from college. You gain knowledge. Second, there isn't a classification of humans that are more delusional about their own wisdom than college students. College age young people probably less so because most of them are already out in the workplace gaining experience and yes wisdom. Third, at the age most people enter college, they are at the height of their belief that their parents are full of shit. They know little or nothing of the real world and their left leaning professors take full advantage over it. It's also that age where a good number of them become anti religious and because the right, unfortunately, wears God on their sleeve so much of the time, they become a major deterrent. I would like to see breakdown of the data that separates the different degrees. For example, someone majoring in literature might be more inclined to to turn left than say someone gaining a business degree. Certainly after college, those who go into business may very well show a much different picture than the above data show. Every few generations or so we have to endure a bunch of college kids who think Marxism is brilliant. Or that authoritarian socialism is the way to go.

One last thing. College educated people voting more Democrat is a very recent thing.  So please don't try to say that they vote more democratic because they are smarter.

AI

  • Past Republican Advantage: For decades through the late 20th century, college-educated voters actually tended to vote more Republican than voters without a college degree, largely driven by higher income levels and business interests. [1]
  • Cultural Views vs. Party Ballots: Even when college graduates regularly voted for Republican candidates in past decades, they still self-identified as more socially and culturally liberal on specific issues (such as tolerance and civil rights) compared to non-graduates. [1]

The Modern Educational Divide
  • The Partisan Flip: Over the last few decades—accelerating sharply in the 1990s and 2000s—the relationship between education and party alignment flipped. College graduates now heavily lean Democratic, while non-college voters form the core of the Republican coalition. [1, 2, 3]
  • Widening Ideological Gap: Research from the Pew Research Center shows that the share of college graduates and postgraduates holding consistently liberal positions has grown significantly since the 1990s, widening the "diploma divide" in American politics. [1, 2, 3]

Well that’s what the data show on All right. Shows all the press and how they lean.  If it’s right or wrong it would not make any difference to you either way, you will go along with whatever horseshit your dear leader tells you!

Do You consider becoming a hardcore Trump supporter, or Republican  also being indoctrinated?

The extreme ends of both parties both have their own crainess.  I would say that I see it from people  in both parties.

The fact he doesn't know that this was a republican only primary is quite telling.  Either he is a dipshit or he thinks his followers are dipshits.  Neither is good.

I don't have any personal experience with college. But from listening to people who have been kicked out or cancelled, the environment does not tolerate dissent on certain subjects. That is the essence of indoctrination. Not all colleges are like that but what do I know. The closest I've ever been to one is dropping my daughter off.  Choosing a political party is quite a different thing. Unless you are still young and just take up whatever your parents are. I would call that indoctrination too. TM is a little long in the tooth to be indoctrinated. I think he's heard a viewpoint or two.

Had a friend recently going to WNMU, studying to be a Game Warden. Professor had the audacity to tell him, “You’ll never pass my Biology class, because you’re Christian”.

110% true.

Jess Reasor, kid I rode bulls with. He ended up quitting college and became a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Great scores across the board. Only class he couldn’t pass………….

Because a crazy left wing loon, who looked Rosie O’Donell and smelled like cat piss, hates Christians. What do you think my chances of graduating would be? 🤣🤣🤣

Veteran’s groups that I’m in say it’s that way across the nation. That’s coming from guys who are actively trying to use their G.I. Bill.

I haven't been to collage either, other than going to Harvard while I was in the 6th grade  to be a part of some testing .  The person I interacted with looked and sounded like Dr. Ruth and I was  wondering if it was her for the first few hours.  She could have been mistaken for her , but unless she used a made up name it wasn't her. I was only there for a day or 2.

All my friends  that went to any college have been out long enough that they have kids getting ready to look at college. So their experience might have been different than what its like now.  They all vary in political beliefs and never said anything about it back that I remember when we were that age. But at that time non of us were really paying attention to that stuff anyway.

The way Trump speaks and has always called news he dislikes "fake news" ,  and how supporters blindly follow him. believing claims made while the documents that get released say otherwise. Its like hes indoctronating his followers.  Not all of them, but there are some that I would say meet the definition .   I'm not arguing that there isn't something similar going on on the Left.

I had a very different childhood from most people I'm sure. My parents always told to question authority for as long as I can remember. Not take anybody at their word alone. Require something to back up what is being said.  My mom had a talk show while the fairness doctrine applied to them, so I always heard a lot from both sides of the political spectrum. So to me, it's just strange to be loyal to any single political party.  The values I was taught growing up do not aline totally with ether.  I always saw my Mom talking to people she did not necessary agree with on things. She would be respectful and often come away with a slightly different view on things. As a result, I've kinda become addicted to learning and a big part of learning is being open to being wrong. If You are never able to admit You are wrong on something, than You have stopped learning. I'm open to being wrong on anything , but I need similar proof to sway my mind that I took into to form my original opinion.

I realize I am the way I am as a result of many things. And that other people will be the way they are as a result of their path to where they are. All the things that had a big impact on me, may not have any on somebody else. But to call somebody the enemy , just because they have different ideas of accomplishing the same goal , is divisive and just not being a good person.  People have strong feelings about political things because they care about the country and others. They just may have different ideas of what they think might be best. That to me is not an enemy. And is one of the big things that turns me off from the current Republican leaders.  During an election , maybe. But after, You are everybodies president and should act that way. But I get it, there are  people who  love Trump because he's the asshole they would like to be able to be.

The chicken or the egg question. Were they indoctrinated in college or after they got on the beat? I'm going with college. And for any of you that have had kids go off to college and seen the transformation..............

The extreme ends of both parties both have their own crainess.  I would say that I see it from people  in both parties.

So your saying an environment that doesn’t tolerate dissent is then indoctrination? Right?

You are = you’re

Your lack of spelling, punctuation, and grammar is rough. Especially while you espouse how much smarter you are than everybody.

indoctrination
/inˌdäktrəˈnāSHən/
Indoctrination is the act of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs, ideas, or rules without questioning them. It relies on repetition and discourages critical thinking or opposing views. [1, 2]

Key Features of Indoctrination
  • No Questions Allowed: Learners cannot ask questions, doubt, or test the ideas being taught.
  • One-Sided View: Only one side of a story or belief system is shared, while other choices are hidden or called wrong.

So, yeah. That's what I'm saying.

There are maga Republicans and non-maga Republicans, maybe that's what he's talking about.

Doesn't really explain the extreme bias in the 1992 survey. I'm also going to say that newsroom people would be closer to the some college category that the post graduate. News reporters are notoriously poorly paid when compared to college grads with some type of degree.

Is the fact that most people generally pick a single candidate to vote for necessarily proof of bias?  It’s not like you can pick two candidates to vote for in the same election.

I don’t think (but I can’t find the whole paper) the survey looked at the complete list of candidates that those surveyed voted for down ticket. That would definitely be a little bit better if you were looking to prove inherent bias, but even then it would be for a single election, not a pattern of bias.

It would actually be a very interesting read if anyone can find the whole paper from 1996!

I didn't look for the whole paper and hung my hat on the available data but you're right, the whole ticket would have told a better story. The 89% to 7% is pretty extreme though. The press I was exposed to really seemed to change from the 88 election to the 92 election. At the time I was reading the LA times, watching CNN and the Sunday morning shows. It's hard to remember clearly but CNN was nothing like they are now but it seemed like it was starting to show during the run up to 92.

Not saying that personal perception has nothing to do with it and that may be more true with network news back then but not newspapers. Different papers in the same town have always displayed their preferences. We had the LA Times and the Examiner. Night and day. The examiner went out of business in 89 and the Times had the floor.
