If you are not following the Open, Bryson was assessed a 2 stroke penalty after the round for improving his swing path on the 5th hole. He went from -7, 1 behind the leader, to -5 for the championship after round 2. There are different videos on Youtube but there is one that looks like he did commit the foul. You cant see the ball but you see him stomp down on a big tuft of grass just before he steps up to take his swing. That grass was in his swing path. I say he deserves the penalty but I can't really say it was intentional. Might have been. Only he really knows. As far as the rule goes, they don't care if it was intentional or not. Was does not seem fair though is that had he signed his card before the officials told him about the penalty, he would have been disqualified. In this case, he was able to change his score on 5 and then sign the card.

I always was under the impression that good caddies inform their players to do things like this, but make it look "unintentional".

Yeah, weird deal.
It didn't look like he was taking too much care preserving the area, but as you said, intention has nothing to do with it.
I don't know what the official protocol is for when officials can or should intervene in such a case. Looks like they did him an enormous favor.
I think they generally try to catch the golfer as he is walking off 18. If you saw the heated argument with officials, it was after the round was over. Other golfers were getting pissed because Bryson was holding everyone up from going home while he was arguing with them. They needed pairings and starting times which could not be set until Bryson signed his card.
I would think the opposite. But I have never been a caddie. It doesn't matter if it was intentional or not anyway.

Would anyone really expect players who are competing for 7 figure paydays to stretch the rules to their absolute limit? How could that happen?
😉
Sounds like they could have told him while it was happening, and maybe resolved it during play.
I'll take your word for it. Your much more knowledge than I

It was not discovered until later. Somebody saw it on video.
Probably the worst 18th green bad news story was right after round 3 of a major I think, John Rahm was informed that he had covid and would not be allowed to play the final round.
That had to suck for Rahm.
They have an official with every group. You'd think he'd be watching.
It's golf, cheating is part of the game...
You just can’t help yourself.
I think Rory summed it up well lol
He went South in the final round anyway. The Kiwi played some good golf. Glad he won.
I was showing an example of cheating in sport you would find acceptable.
