What’s the worst thing you’ve gotten in your eye?

Metal shards.

And small chips of wood that get caught up in your eyelid, scratching your cornea.

Can't remember any liquid hell.

My worst was a piece of a parting tool stuck in the white of my eye. They used some kind of electro-magnet to get it out. Eye taped open until they removed it.

Worst liquid? MEKP from when a capillary line busted on a chopper gun.

Brake Cleaner while wearing contacts. That was absolutely god awful feeling. The contact trapped the brake cleaner underneath it, so I had to pull that off my eyeball and flushed the hell out of my eye. I should have went to the doctor, but meh. lol 

I was lighting a steam boiler, looking down the sight tube and and put my flame near the pilot, BOOM! The whole underside of the boiler was filled with gas. I had to have a surgeon pick the rust and metal shit from my eyeballs. Took 2 days to get all out. The anesthetic drops were a lifesaver.

I woke up at a party, still hazy as fuck. Went to take a piss and Mr. Johnson got stuck in the metal zipper. Hurt like hell so I went through their med cabinet and found some cream I thought would work. It turned out to be Ben Gay. Sobered me right up.

In junior high, if you were not putting in effort on the field of play, someone might sneak into your locker, and put a little ben-gay in your jock strap.

Funny as hell to watch, not so funny to be the recipient. 

A bristle from the wire wheel on my grinder. Stuck in there like a spear. I always wear safety glasses after that one. 

I had LASIK that didn’t go well in one of my eyes. Had to go back in a day or two later for them to re-lift the flap… that was not fun.

Terrible vision for 6 months maybe. CoQ10 seemed to help clear it up, took it for most the year. 

I'm sitting in the hospital as I write this.  I'm here so they can fix what they fucked up during my recent cataract surgery....Hopefully.  I'm a big cry baby but losing my eyesight scares the shit outta me fellas.  Take care of what you got.

A large shaving…a pig-tail…came flying off of a machined part while machining…a fellow machinist scooped it out with his pinky-fingernail. It landed in my eye/between the eyeball and aye-lid…and “sizzled” a little bit according to the doc I went and saw…IMMEDIATELY! 🤣

Damn Chance, sounds like that was a close one! Glad you’re on the mend. Worse for me was a metal shard that got stuck in the white part of my eye. I had gotten shards removed from my eyes before, but this one apparently had been in there a while but was deep enough it didn’t get irritated right away.  They couldn’t scrape it out like the other time. 

So, had to go to an optometrist, and the dude took a quick look and said, oh yeah, it’s metal alright, it’s made a rust ring around itself. Said we’ll have to drill that out. So put my head in the clamp thing after numbing drops, and I shit you not pulled what looked like a fountain pen out of his shirt pocket, took a bit of some sort out of a plastic wrapper and snapped it onto the pen which was a high speed drill, and came at my eye with it. He said “Hold still”. That was wild watching a spinning bit come directly into my eye, and then feel the vibration and tugging! It was all over in a split second, and he said “Got it.”

Started wearing safety glasses after that, whether the shop required it or not. 

I got gasoline in my eye just recently; I was working on a carb and turned it sideways. Some leftover fuel from the float bowl started pouring out of the overflow tubes, so I grabbed at them to stick them in my mixing cup to contain the spill. When I grabbed the tubes, I must have flung one of them in the perfect direction and it spat a drop or two right into my eye. That stung for a little bit, but it went away pretty fast. 

Welding arc burns. 

Fells like sand in your eyes.

Safety glasses are going to trend on Amazon today, haha.

Fu@K buddy, you are having some terrible luck these last few years. I've had all sorts of chemicals get in my eyes over the years. Never used to wear glasses until my eyesight started to go and then only so I could see. Looking back, I now see how it could have turned out horribly. The most recent incident, I was next to the guy spraying down the inside of the (new to us Fadal) CNC. Brand new coolant mixed at 10%, a drop went over my glasses and right in my eye. Off to go wash it, could not get my eye clean. I don't know how many times I flushed/washed my eye but as of the next morning I still had blurred vision. Probably one of the only times I was worried about permanent damage as I just didn't know if it was an oil film on or in the tissue causing the blurred vision. After about 24 hours my vision started to clear up in that eye. New rule, anyone cleaning up the CNC at the end of the day must wear the goggles and not just glasses.

Are your crew required to wear safety glasses when pouring chemicals into the pools? Or do you let them slide with sun glasses?

I've had  brake cleaner , lacquer thinner. The cleaning solution for my solvent ink printer got in my eye one time and it was the worst chemical as far as pain goes. 

Metal flake from when I used to paint.  While not painful. The flake is almost impossible to get out and  has taken years to totally clean out. Every so often I would see little flashes of light as the flake reflected the sun just right. 

The most uncomfortable thing was one time while out riding my MTB. I never used to wear sunglasses while riding , but I had gotten some after the local bike shop had urged me to. Well on that very first ride wearing my spiffy new MTB glasses with clear yellow lens I was on singletrack that was not ridden very often and was a bit overgrown. Some of the overgrowth was dead and dry and broke easy.  Well as I'm cruising along loving the feel of protection and the fast flowing trail. I brush against some brush with my head and keep going but my eye felt like there was something in it so I stopped and waited for my buddy that was with me and he pulled up just in time to see me pulling a stick out of my eye. I had a small branch that broke off and was pushed under my eyelid by the way it hit the sunglasses. Somehow my eye was fine. It felt like I had sand in it for a week or so. And that was the first and last time I ever wore those sunglasses riding an MTB. And for years after I wouldn't wear any eye protection on a bike because of that.  

 A friend of mine used to get those wires from wire wheels in his eyes so often it seemed like he was trying to do it. Even with glasses or a shield, somehow he just kept getting them in his eye.

2. Contact cleaner, sprayed back off of something directly in my eye with contacts in…like the earlier post, had to get the contact out first…good times
3. Glass shard. Doing a remodel and was sweeping up some tempered glass. The broom flung a little in my eye. I flushed it out, thought I got it all and the irritation was just a lingering effect. The next morning I woke up with my eye still feeling like something was in it. Used a flashlight and finally saw the shard floating on my eyeball (not embedded thankfully). Managed to use a wet q-tip to lift it out. No more sweeping (or a lot of other things) without safety glasses.

And here I thought it was only the last few years, you're a walking hazard to yourself 🤣

Many years ago had a 12v battery explode in my face when putting a discharge meter to it immediately after it had been charged, acid to the eyes isn't nice but got away with it. Learnt a lesson there.

I used to wear glasses up until being around 23 (short sighted) got them lasered, but before that had a rock smash me in the face down the start straight at a race in Northern Ireland at the ex GP track Desertmartin, the glasses I had on beneath my goggles were made of actual glass. So my left eye had many splinters of glass in it. 

Due to it being a weekend there were no eye specialists working at the hospital in Belfast so had to get an early ferry back home to England. Had to keep my eye closed and still as much as possible as some shards were catching the eye lid. From track to the hospital back home was about an 8hr journey. Some shards got left in as they said it would be too problematic to remove them and luckily enough haven't caused any lasting damage.

Desertmartin was a mega track though.
