Yz250f broken clutch plate

Edited Date/Time 6/27/2026 12:35pm

Cut apart my filter today and this amount of shavings seems excessive but I don’t know.
Bike is a 2024 yz250f with 22 hrs new clutch plates at 16hrs. Shavings don’t seem magnetic they won’t stick to my magnet.

Looks like a clutch plate broke apart will I need to strip this thing down to the bottom end?

Ive broken plates long time ago at Southwick, heavy clutch abuse, from overheating the plates…how the metals look? Signs of heat/ warpage?

Steels look brand new still, fibers do also. I had an oem plate crack at 16hrs so put these Hinson plates in. They lasted 4 hours

Strange failures…maybe inspect the basket, pressure plate & inner hub for burr”s and or/ surface area imperfections….something is not right

I’m gonna try to flush it out see if I can get anymore big pieces. I’ll see what the pressure plate and hub look like. I’ve always been a clutch abuser but I’ve never broken plates till this bike.

I'd be splitting that bottom end.  If you do it now you might be able to salvage the crank and bearings but taking it apart is the only way to fully clean it out.   While it's apart, I would put a new oil pump in.  They actually are not that expensive and they are prone to debris ingestion when something breaks.

Im just wondering why that first fiber keeps breaking, im assuming heat but ive never had this issue on any other dirt bike, I had a 2023 also without any clutch issues. what else could i do to make the clutch hold up better. I dont think ill run hinson plates again.

+1 on splitting the cases.

Good idea on closer examination of the basket to see if and where plates are getting caught.

How many fiber plates have you broken on this bike?

One plate was cracked at 16hrs so I replaced them with Hinson fibers. This one scattered at 21hrs, so after 5 hrs or 5 rides. Both plates were the inner most fiber.  Basket looks fine visually other then couple wear marks where this plate was sitting and kind of dinged it up. I am wondering if there is something not quite right with this basket and pressure plate. Is there a spot on this motor where pieces can get trapped in the cases I’ve got it stepped down and flushed it and gotten most of the aluminum out as far as I can tell.

Are all the fibers the same? Or is there a special inner / outer in the stack?

The 2024 diagram shows 8-Fiber and 7-steel.. but then it shows one extra steel on the outside that is not labeled or listed in the plate count !  Note that the 2025 diagram does not show this one extra plate.

I seen that when looking at the microfiche last night and it made no sense to me there is no extra steel in the clutch.

When the motor is split what would be best to flush the bearings out. Diesel? Or is there something better?
