How about self-made-millionaire-privateer?

I think if you have sponsors paying for everything then you shouldn't be considered a privateer. Chad's doing great though and i hope he stay on the podium for the rest of the year. That win will come soon enough...

From what I understand Chad's sponsers aren't paying for everything - from what I gathered he has put in big $ to make this season happen.. He's refereed lots of times to paying wages etc from his own cheque book. Im stoked he is in 3rd.

That's true. Well it's pretty brave of Chad to start up a team and he's only out there racing because he loves it. So either way the guy deserves huge props and respect. Hope to see him do good outdoors also.

Wait till we hit the east coast and that "Has Been" lights it up like always does.
Chad sucks on the west, but on the East he kills it.
Same story every year.

not bad for an old guy who cant ride anymore..man this place is full of dikheads. One slip from Bubba or RV and its Reeds to win. Bubba HAD to dominate today or his TV show would look like shit and Malcolm would have to flip burgers.

I know - the debate about "true privateers" will outlast bacteria.

Granted Reed does not get a salary from a bike manufacturer.

But how many "privateers" are running factory gearboxes and factory Dunlops???

I guess he's a privateer with "benefits"... Wink

Every Privateer is on a private team, so he is a privateer. Every privateer finances his own effort and hopes that sponsorship money will make up the difference just like Chad is doing. Not every privateer is a millionaire and past champion and this is causing most to think he isn't a true privateer.

Kudos to Chad for doing what he thought was right and putting his money where his mouth is! Nobody should belittle his effort this year. He did everything on his own just as a privateer would if they had his money and influence, no wait thats not correct most privateers would have taken the millions and retired........lol Go get them Chad.

Privateer's dont have FACTORY bike parts and information.
But it sounds like he did have a decent ride non the less. but keep in mind, he was over 12 seconds back of RV and 16 seconds back of Stewart...... thats a loooooonnng way back.

Privateers have factory parts and information if the are fast enough and because Chad has influence. We have never had a privateer as fast as Chad.

The days of true privateers being a part of this sport or numbered. Good thing or not, that's just the way it is.

Good for Chad for putting together a solid team and coming to race this season. Hope he can step it up one more notch, grab some wins and make it a 3 way battle.

To take everything from a scratch and build an podium team/bike and not fall asleep from exhaustion right before main. Not bad, not bad at all.

I believe the King said Reed could do it but it would be difficult. Should that make the king feel stupid?

You need to go back and watch that interview again.

The King was very clearly taking a shot at Reed.

Definitely doing well so far, but I have to say...If I were a "privateer" with a semi truck full of parts/team personnel then I would feel stupid if I weren't in the top 5 or so at least.

but he does have factory parts. he has a factory transmission.

still doesnt make him a factory rider.

i cant believe how difficult and stupid this "privateer or not" discussion is.

satellite teams dont usually get worx stuff. does that make them privateers? fuck no. but it doesnt make them factory riders either.

being a factory rider has a lot more to do with it than just the parts. i dont care to go into some great long rant detailing all the benefits aside from just the parts. but they are there. when you are a privateer, you know how much better it would feel to be on a private team. and when you are on a private team, you know how much better the satellite guys have it. and the satellite guys know how much better the factory guys have it. there are significant differences at every level. the racers know this, how come its so hard to illustrate here?

being a privateer means you are ON YOUR OWN. if you are on a team, even if the team is a non-affiliated private team, you are NOT on your own. and if you happen to own that team, you are still on a team, with resources available to you that the common privateer doesnt have.

privateers are parked out behind the main pits. pitting with there parents. with a friend who is helping them out for the day. hopefully they got a nice box trailer to pit out of. they get some help from a couple sponsors. maybe a shop paid there entry fee. but they are on there own for the most part. theres a special section of the pits for the privateers. most fans dont even notice it. and the twotwo motorsports setup is parked nowhere near that section.

all that said, it takes nothing away from what reed is doing. which imo is much harder than being a privateer. running a successful private mx team at the highest level, and competing and beating much more established and experienced private/satellite/and factory teams is an accomplishment all in itself for a first year team. throw in the fact that while doing that job he is racing and competing for the championship on satellite level equipment (at best). i couldnt respect him more. i give him mad props.....i just wont give him the title of a privateer.

I tend to agree, but what about back in the day , weren't riders on teams like LOP and Team Tamm considered privateers even though they were on teams ?

ATK, yeah they were.

but we're in different times now. the definitions have changed. simply put, there are more types of "rides" out there thats all.

there was a time when it was just factory or privateer. but with the advent of satellite teams and the emergence of very strong private teams like JGR and others....you cant just define everyone as either privateer or factory.
