1998 Ponca City Grand Nationals complete rider entry list. Kinda cool seeing these names considering how far they've come now.

Jannice McAlister was a good woman. She used to put on the races up at Huetter Idaho and some over at the Spokane track too I think, I never had a problem at one of her races and she was always pleasant to me. I think she died of cancer not too long after this?

And is that THE Tony Alessi announcing?

That would be him.. He used to announce on the weekends to pick up extra money for the kids racing. While he's a bit on the kookie side (understatement alert), Tony has been around this sport for 40 + years and has done everything from announcing to picking up track to raising two world class riders.

Great post, forgot how many New Mexico racers there were back then!

These are always cool to see.

Saw a few local names on here that I used to get so pissed when they beat me cause I was always right there when I first started racing. At the time I never thought about the fact they had atleast 3 years of experienc on me after seeing this.

So many local heroes on that list for me.  That’s the racing I remember.

All people who would’ve been in The Pickle magazine eventually as well haha

It was a great time to be an up and coming rider in NM back then!
We had tons of challenging tracks and a bunch of national level talent to watch and learn from.  It was vibing back then.

Unfortunately for me, I was the kid that worked at the local Honda dealership. Scrubbing bikes, changing tires and dreaming of going to Ponca but couldn’t afford it.  😂

Man, a blast from the past!

That list had all (or most, anyway) of the usual suspects that frequented our track. A bunch were regulars, and even more showed up for big races.

That was a fun look back.
