I did a interview with JT$ and I told a friend I think he was the most popular work horse privateer of all time. My buddy argued that no way JT's more popular than Barry Carsten. But my friends from Jersey so he has no credibility at all.

JT's interview is live at LP MX if you guys want to check it out.

A sit down with JT$
I agree, JT. I remember buying JT and his dad steak dinners during the 2000 series so he'd do early morning TV shoots for me. Trust me, they were true privateers (he and his dad). I have a lot of respect for that kid. Met him back when he and Demuth rode for Team Excel in the 90's...

Travis Pastrana. He bought a bike on his way to Texas one year and raced the Pro Challenge at Swan MX Park in Tyler ,Tx. That qualifies as a privateer, and he pretty popular too.Whistling

Define 'privateer'. Just sayin',,,,
We were arguing about true workhorse privateers.NOT Ivan Tadesco type privateers. We were talking guys that have never had a factory ride ever..

Excuse the typo..

Yeah Carsten had a 2 digit number forever without any factory support! He has to hold the title for being a real privateer. Jojo did qualify for nationals in 3 different decades but he did have some Honda support at one time even though it was minimal.

There is a lot of them that were popular and had good rides with a lot of following but it also depends on the area.

Exactly, if they want to have a good debate I think the riders we talk about should never of had any factory support throughout their career. It's hard though cause you never know really what kind of support riders are getting.

I meant to say NOT Ivan Tedesco type privateers..Oooops..lol I said it , or meant to say that because we all know the IT's of the world are about as far from privateer as it gets.

Evans actually had some long autograph lines in the pits and that is no joke.

I haven't seen any name on here yet that could line 'em up like him.

Proof

Barry Carsten. 2 digit number for like 15 years? In the rags from time to time? Has he ever been seriously hurt? That last one I put down is a testament to how good he was naturally. He just worked on physical conditioning and going to the edge, but not over it.

If anything, he was smart to be that competitive for that long. Just don't see it happening again, as far as the longevity for someone doing it on his own dime!!!

Lots of good names here.

But don't forget that in the 70's Tony DiStefano on his CZ at age 17 or 18 'vanned it' out of a Dodge and almost won the championship.

This was pre-Suzuki obviously...
