The story I always heard was that Emig had agreed to sit the race out in solidarity with the other racers. Then went against his word and raced the depleted field behind everyone else’s back. That would certainly be something I would remember about a fellow competitor if true.

As to Hannah hating everyone but Roger; he always liked Marty Tripes and Danny LaPorte, and I'm pretty sure he had a lot of respect for Marty Smith, too.
I was thinking more along the lines of John Savitski, Jeff Hicks, etc.
I thought that he was pretty friendly with the Wanket twins too, but I might not be remembering that correctly.
