Is there some kind of criteria on how/when this CAPTCHA crap shows up when clicking on topics?  I can complete the captcha thing in the early part of the day and few hours later it starts bugging me again.  I don't get hassled this hard on financial sites.

Don't think this happens on my phone but it's kinda frustrating on my pc.  The timing of it is odd too...might be fine when I first bring the site up and then I'll open multiple tabs and turns out I get the captcha crap on every new tab even thought I wasn't asked on the initial screen.

Just seems over the top and uneccessary to be bugged over and over on the same site. Is this prompted by users running ad blockers or what?

Who knows, you might be right.

Had an email from the head guy at Vital, said he was checking and wanted to verify I was a human and not a bot.

Weird, I know!

Our site is constantly bombarded by bots, so our firewall tries to block them. You're seeing the captcha because it flagged you as having a browser setup similar to what a bot uses. The captcha is valid for an hour, but that only works if your browser is accepting cookies (that's how it remembers that you passed the captcha). Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the info on that @bmcd70 .

Regarding my browser and appearing to be a bot.  Any suggestions regarding a setting in Chrome that might help?

I'm basically using Chrome with the duck duck go add-on enabled and an ad blocker.  I'll try turning those off to see if it makes any difference... or is it a case that since I've been marked as a bot on this site that changing my settings won't help?  I don't have any issues on any other sites. Also, not running a VPN when this happens.

Truly not a bot...been on this site under same user name and using Chrome for quite a few years.

hmmm...I've not had that one.

At least with that you can click thru it rather than going to another screen and needing to type in a captcha code.

Oh, bmcd70...also

- confirmed that I'm accepting cookies.

- Just now turned off the two add-ons in Chrome,  still getting the captcha screen.

- Just now cleared my browser cache and such...same result.

Does Vital maybe have a ticketing system that I can submit something on this?

Get rid of DuckDuckGo. We had a tech install it unofficially on tons of customers' machines, and they had nothing but issues. Took us years to eventually get rid of it again.

Hmmm, I'm trying to get around your the advertising on your site, which is how you make money. And the app I'm using seems to throw up some weird stuff on your site. Can you help me not make you money

I wish I could give give a clear-cut explanation for how to avoid the captcha, but it's not that simple. We use a third-party service for our firewall. They look for many different signals to differentiate human from bot traffic. My only suggestion is to avoid an unusual setup with your computer (VPN, browser plug-ins designed to mask activity, ad blockers, etc.). I know the captcha can be a hassle, but we're a bit like a retailer that's had to lock up merchandise because of rampant shoplifters. It's a big hassle and expense for us as well. Individual tech support or ticketing isn't an option, as our site receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each month and is free to use.

Thanks. I disabled duck duck go and had no effect on the issue.

Ad blocker has zero to do with this...go do your slackerboy routine elsewhere.

Yeah, thanks for bringing that up...the previous vital person that contacted me , asked if I had a VPN turned on.  I do occasionally use a VPN but not the case here.

Ok, thanks for the overview of the situation...sorry to hear no way to resolve.

I'm still wondering if the system has me flagged or something as I can fire up Chrome after clearing cache and cookies and then disable all apps/plugins and I still get the same thing.

I've been using Duck Duck Go for years on this site as well as all others and have never seen the captcha thing, once, that I can remember.  I probably just jinxed myself...
