RM 250 Throttle Help

I need your input. I bought a 2005 RM 250, and on the first ride the throttle stuck wide open going up a jump face. That sucked. The carb slide is fine, and it seems like the cable is the problem. I have a new one, but I just want to make sure there isn't something else on this death machine that might be the problem.

Does the cable get in a bind when you turn? Have you lubed the cable? What makes you think it's the cable? Need more info to give advice.... Welcome, NOOB!...

The throttle housing and carb slide are clean and bind-free. The ends of the old cable are not attached to the plastic cable housing, and it allows the end of the cable to come out of the top of the carb when the cable is pulled slightly, which caused the engine to go WFO.

Hope this makes sense. BTW, what is the solenoid on the carb for?

Are there little brass bushing's on the plastic housing? I don't understand what you're sayin'.. If you grab the cable and pull on it, Will lift up out of the carb? If so, That's your problem. New cable and housing and you're ready to ride.... Now STFU NEWBIE!!!!

Make sure the throttle cable is not pinched between the tank and the frame. I believe that I had that happen to me once on an o4 rm250 if my memory serves me correctly.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but just make sure that it's routed right and keep it lubed.

Simple test:

...if the throttle snaps back, then it is not a cable problem.

...if you feel a binding of any kind, it could be routed incorrectly.

...it should twist open easy, and snap back quickly...there is no in-between.

The solenoid is for the power jet circuit. There is also a TPS towards the top of the carb.

Not to be overly obvious but have you checked the throttle tube?
A kid that raced with my son had one stick wide open and it was from debris that got under the tube during a mud race.

Did you open up the carb to make sure the spring wasnt stuck???Did you open up the throttle to make sure that there was no pieces locking the throttle...If you checked both of those and you still cant find the problem then yes you should go on and install that new cable...To prevent if from happening again you want to occasionally lube both you cable and the throtle.

oh, and another thing... I'm not sure how your throttle cable goes in, but if it's a mechanical slide (sorry, I'm too used to working on inline fours at school) and the throttle cable enters the carb at the top, when you lube it, lube the holy living hell out of it until nothing but the lube comes out the bottom of the cable, when you lube your cables it washes out some of the crap that gets worn on the inside of the rubber hose surounding the cable, make sure all of that gets out before you put it back on. It will leak down into the carb, and if that crap is in there, you don't want that being drawn into your combustion chamber and getting burned with your mixture.

Too much grip glue will do the same thing...It's not a real obvious thing come to think. It happens all the time, and rarely gets checked. People over think sometimes...hmm ?

Are you sure its the cable and maybe you are sucking air? I had an air leak once and my '97 went WFO and almost couldnt turn it off - screaming like a Cox airplane engine on crack. Scared the hell outta me, thought the thing was gonna explode.

Whirlpool-type throttle? Make sure the little metal spacer is still inside the pulley (take the top off of the throttle housing to check). I had a CR500 and the guy who had the bike before me left it out when replacing the cable. It's enough to allow the pulley - and the throttle cable - to shift around, bind in the housing and give you the ride of a lifetime.

Wow...the throttle cable on my RM has a few seasons on it. This thread makes me think I need to maintain it a little bit.
Stuck throttles only lead to bad, bad things...

spray some kind of contact cleaner onto your engine along the gaskets, and if your RPM temporarily rises, you got a leak.

Don't forget left side main seal if everything else checks out. Sometimes you will get black spooge pooling underneath the flywheel .... so you may be able to to see signs of it leaking wihtout having to start the engine.

Any dirt getting past the filter? You sure the needle is straight? Positive that there are no nicks on the slide or in the body of the carb where the slide operates? Cable installed and routed properly? NO dirt in throttle tube or on handle bar? Are you sure the throttle assembly was installed WITHOUT being bottomed against the handlebar... as in there is slight side to side play?

i have a problem with my 04 rm250 itll cut off while riding it and sometimes the throttle gets suck not wide open but to keep it going

I had 6 2004-2006 RM 2 strokes. Never had a problem and never replaced a cable or tube. Check for stupid stuff like dirt or glue or the tube being jammed too far on to the handlebars. I always leave a little space so it doesn't stick after a crash.
