Motocross racing health insurance coverage?

Hey guys - have a health insurance question.  My wife and I are considering a health insurance policy that is quite good, but it specifically excludes motorcycle racing from coverage....of course lol.  There are quite a few other "Extreme Activities" included on the list.  Does anyone know if there is such a thing as supplemental health coverage you can get for a one off race or event here and there?  I don't race often, but if I do, just wondering if there was health coverage available for a one-off event?

Thanks!

How do they define a "race"? Is it only for professionals, or any timed/scored event?

An "organized competition" is what my agent told me. If you pay to enter and if your name is on a sign up sheet you wont be covered and believe me the Insurance company will find out if you file a claim.

They don't prohibit motocross riding, but do specifically say "motorcycle racing" is excluded from coverage.  They also say, motocross riding is ok, unless you are engaging in it as a professional, or in a contest for purse or prize money valued over $100.  I do race the A class when I race, so the contest money would exclude racing under that definition as well, since there is purse money - so it's very clear it's not covered Smile

Yea that's tricky, lots of policies have similar verbiage in them in regards to racing for money and how they try to call people "professionals", It's also near impossible to get anything in writing from those slippery fucks so getting that clarified before an incident is also tough.

Or just use the I fell off my bicycle or ladder line...only works if you don't have to take a ride though.

Whatever insurance you have you should also get Aflac supplemental, my work pays for it but its like $15 a month or something cheap.

I crashed my brains out a couple weeks ago and jacked my neck up really bad and went for an x-ray to be safe and Aflac paid me $150 for the visit and x-ray.

A couple years back I broke my scapula and after x-rays, CT scans and visits I ended up with a few hundred bucks.

The 'ride' is the only part that would eff me in the end. I was looking at the insurance links provided, but I need someone to explain it to me like I'm 6 years old. 🤔

If you have to take a ambulance ride to the hospital than the jig is up. 🤫

The track I primarily ride has their own ambulances and EMT/Paramedic, luckily, and it's covered by them, but the second that ER door swings open, you have some explaining to do.

I guess it's better than nothing, but the top policy has a limit of $20,000 for an annual premium of $700 ($58/month).  If somebody is excluded from dirt bike injuries on their main medical insurance, I would think you could blow past $20,000 in medical costs pretty quickly, especially if you are transported by helicopter.

I agree - $20k is nothing so doesn’t seem like very good coverage.   I’d be much more comfortable with $250k or $500k lol.  As we know, this isn’t for the tip over, this is for the highly unlikely bad case scenario!

Friend in high school got hit by a car while riding his bmx bike and had to be med flighted. Ended up costing $45,000 and that was 10 years ago. $20,000 is terrible coverage.

Yeah, I guess there are two ways to look at it.  If moto is excluded from your insurance policy, then this is an OK option to at least provide you some basic coverage.

But as somebody who is covered under my health insurance plan, I am more interested in some sort of extreme coverage like you mention.  If I had a bad injury and needed to have a caretaker for a few months, or lost mobility, I would want hundreds of thousands to try to help the ongoing costs.  I have no idea if this kind of coverage exists or is a reasonable cost.

To clarify, this is for motorcycle racing only.  I’m covered for motocross riding, it’s just that if I wanted to do an actual race, they say I’m not covered for that.  Health insurance in America is such a joke right now with skyrocketing costs and reducing and more strict coverage limits and stipulations excluding many things.  Thanks Obamacare for having very negative unintended consequences that started after that was implemented lol
