Not technically moto, but what I know about the 11-time Baja champion all starts with him waving at the camera on a Terrafirma video, 100-mph one-handed through the pucker-brush desert, so...
How cool is it that his boy Preston is leading Dakar by 20 minutes in the Rally 2 class in only his fourth ever rally race?
It's very cool!
We call him "P-Dog" and he's having a great run at his first Dakar Rally. During Stage 3 he rode his motorcycle 457 miles! And that's just one of the 13 Stages at Dakar Rally.
Soooo stoked for the Campbell family and friends. But, honestly, no matter what the result, if Preston finishes his 1st Dakar and comes home healthy…?
That’s called SUCCESS! 💪🏼🇺🇸
When Andrew Short came home from his 1st Dakar race and gave some of us a debrief on all that a rider goes thru during the weeks of the Dakar rally. ..? Damn. This isn’t just a rally…it’s a literal “Ultimate Moto Challenge”.
At the AIMExpo, today, while hanging out with the Showa guys, I was studying the HRC CRF Rally that they have on display(part of the US HRC Rally program…a true “works bike”)…it’s a survival machine. It’s built to go far, go fast and smash thru whatever the earth throws at it. It got me thinking…man, nothing about riding that bike -as fast as the team racers do- with all that fuel and all that instrumentation…nothing about it looks easy.
Like I said, this is Preston’s 1st Dakar and on a bike that, compared to the HRC works bike…his is VERY “production based” (HRC Rally 2 bike) and quite a bit less compliant when it comes to handling like a typical dirt bike…at those speeds…at those distances…in that terrain…so, as I was looking at the “works bike”…it gave me a bit of a reckoning & a reality check.
Theses guys are such bad asses.
So, here’s to all of’em from Kove to KTM to our friends on HRC…may they all have a safe race.

Preston couldn’t be a nicer kid and also unreal on a bike! Obviously runs in the veins! Pumped to see him killing it out there!
NO doubt
Watching the highlights every night, great to see the next generation coming through.
Following Road racer James Hillier, unfortunately broke a bone in his arm.
Xeno I believe they use KM instead of Miles, but impressive all the same
I had the pleasure of doing a Baja ride with Johnny and Preston Campbell and Ricky Brabec back in 2017, all 3 were very cool to this non-offroad riding moto guy. Amazing skill on a dirt bike.
I've gotten to hang out and ride with Preston while we was doing some work for Honda while he was in Ohio. He was still pretty young and had not rode in a ton of eastern Mud but he still won the local fundraiser race we had here in my hometown.

Great guy, Very nice, and Very talented. I love seeing him doing well.
Preston making it look like it’s sooooo easy…
Just moments ago as everyone turns in for the night…
he's doing better than I would have thought! Keeps climbing the ladder! But not too surprised, haha
he's been doing really good. Rooting for him, especially now that bru from SA, Docherty is out.
P Dawgs friggin on it, 9th OA and leading the Pro 2 class!!
Yes, I convert the kms to miles because 95% of VitalMx is American.
Stage 6 was 571 miles total.
2001: 8th overall/1st privateer, with stock muffler.
A 16-minute lead in his class, and still 9th overall. Another great day.
Appreciate the feedback from the San Clemente-Oceanside type locals. Was the time when I'm sure I woulda known the kid, but it's been almost 20 years since I've spend any quality time down south of Ensenada.
Goddamit all.
Knew his pops just a little, and way rooting for the boy.

Epic thanks for sharing that photo.
I'm a big JC fan, I have that Terriferma 3 video mentioned earlier on VHS still too. Super cool to see his son racing now as well!
After stage 12 …from Johnny this morning…
Preston 8th overall and 3rd Rally 2 today. Ricky takes control with 105km special left to go tomorrow.
