I got sick of dealing with the dislocations. For 2 years my shoulder was just "bad". It hurt when I did certain things, but never really popped out. Then it go to the point where if I threw a football (or anything really), picked something up off the ground, or just simply moved my arm the "wrong way" it would pop out. The last straw was when I was riding out in the desert I washed out in a corner going like 10 mph. I stupidly stuck my hand out as I went down and upon contact I felt/heard a crack and tear. 2 seconds later I never felt so much pain my life.
An amazing doctor and $70k later and I'm now 100% (fortunate I have a great PPO insurance...).
First thing I'd do is go to a good orthopedic specialist and see what they say. If the damage is minimal they might give you some exercises you can do or even refer you to a physical therapist. Even then, if it dislocates a second time you might as well get surgery. It's just going to keep happening more frequently as you cause further damage. When reading on this subject a couple years ago I remember reading a lot of articles that said the first dislocation usually isn't bad (obviously depends on the circumstances), but any further dislocations just means it's going to keep happening if you continue the same physical activities.
Bottom line, just see a doctor and get a definitive answer. Don't do what I did and wait forever and think about your shoulder every time you do something (like riding).

The 4-6 week thing is something I agree with though... That was my problem. I'd hurt my shoulder then go back to normal activity 3-4 days later. That's what I get for not seeing a doctor when things first started going bad.
Are you really going off on me about this?
He would of figured it out eventually.
Why would this unmotivate him?
Its not like this is gonna keep him from riding or racing and keep trying to progress.
It didn't unmotivate me when I was told.
Hell my doctor was the first one to tell me this after my MRI.
I just asked how soon till I can ride again.
Hell its better for him to find out now then after surgery and 6-8 months be wondering why it still hurts at random or doing certain things so he doesn't waist going back to the doctor for him to tell him "Yeah thats normal after any major shoulder surgery".
Meow.
You of all people DDavis, seriously? Made me chuckle.
But it is a bummer to hear someone getting banged up, good luck in getting fixed up and back on the bike soon!

However, I have two friends who had one dislocation years ago and continued to ride without any further issues.

Now on the other hand, I separated my OTHER shoulder as bad as you can a few years back and it still gets sore/weak when I do certain stuff. My collarbone also sticks out and freaks people out.
Good luck healing up!
Within 2-4 days I was removing the arm from the sling and exercising it by pushing out, pulling in, etc... I also made a point of holding the arm straight out instead of into my body reasoning that those tendons were loose and held forward they would heal tighter.
Since that accident I have broken my right clavicle 2x and my right shoulder blade 1x and the shoulder has never came out of socket again. I also work out pretty aggressively as well (pull ups often cause dislocations on others, not me). The arm feels 100% normal.
I have a good roadracing friend that dislocated his arm and he followed doctors instructions to a T. And once a month I would be over there yanking on his arm putting it back in socket often just because he would reach for a wrench or something.
Western medicine has a lot to learn about proper health. I shattered my L1 vertebrae exactly 32 days ago now. I'm supposed to be in a full body brace for another 8 weeks or so. I don't wear it and I walk around like a normal person already. (yes it hurts at times) Wearing that brace and limiting movement for 10-12 weeks total would have resulted in arthiritis (in my non-professional, but often injured, opinion) and illness in my back forever.
Good luck w/ your injuries.
There is another thread right now about painkillers. The body actually has a tremendous ability to regenerate itself. I have broken over 20 bones in my life. I have had multiple repair surgeries. 4 weeks ago before I broke my back I felt, moved (and practically looked) like I did when I was 19 years old. It is my opinion that most of this disease that people call aging or old injuries is 95% bad health and nutrition.
Do PT dont slack.
Do the exorcises they give at home dont slack on those.
If it does hurt, youll get used to it.
Maybe I did come off a little abrupt about always being a problem, but the shoulders and legs are the two worse thing to do any muscle damage too.
Dont rush into riding, take your time, they always make quarterzone shots if you need them =)
