Torn calf

While racing yesterday I landed from a jump and immediately felt a pop in my calf. Long story short it is torn, but my Achilles tendon is good. Anyone else out there experienced this and if so what was recovery like? I'm hopeful I can be back to walking in 2 weeks as I need to be mobile for work.

I don't know if my calf was torn or just strained.  But it swelled up a bunch.  I limped around for a week or two, and then the swelling led to a blood clot that nearly killed me and put me in the hospital for 5 days.  By the time I got out of the hospital, I forgot about the original calf injury.

You went to a doc and had the tear confirmed, right? Did they not give you a timeline for recovery/PT?

I did go to the ortho and the tear is confirmed. I'm not sure it was even discussed. If so I honestly forgot.  I was mostly concerned about how long will it take for me just to walk normally so I can return to work.

Mine took a solid 8 weeks to fully heal, I was limping and hobbled around for the first 6 weeks. Not fun when you have to be mobile.

If you're just worried about being able to walk, get one of the really nice walking boots. They basically immobilize your ankle/calf/achilles. I walked on one for a week when I tore my Achilles and it was pretty much pain free

I did mine over the summer.  Took about 2 weeks before I could limp around without crutches.  About a month before I could mostly walk and do some light biking.  About two months to be able to walk almost normal and ride mtb.   About 4 months before I could feel somewhat normal.   I'm at almost five months now and I still can't run or jump normal with it.  But I can ride my dirt bike pain free and MTB mostly pain free.

I actually turned one down today at the dr. Visit. I'm a maintenance mechanic/electrician, so a boot like that doesn't work for me. I need to be in EH rated steel toes.

I was afraid of hearing info like this. Man this sport is not forgiving. And this year has been unkind to me with two separate "freak" accidents.

What did the doctor say?

I tore my calf in 2019 and if I remember correctly it was a week of severe limping, several weeks of limping and then weeks 4-6 I was able to do PT and walk more freely. Took a solid month before I was able to ride the bike lightly (maybe week 5?) and I was hyper aware of not putting that foot down the whole time.

Depends on the tear, I’m sure, but 2 weeks to be active would be pretty surprising.

Good luck bud.

Wearing the boot at the moment will immobilize it and maybe let it heal faster.

I'm curious, when you landed and heard the pop, were you on the balls of your feet with your heels dropped or more on the arches? I jacked up both of my ankles badly casing a jump last year and it took a good solid 3 months to get my ankles right.

I do ride on my balls of my feet. Not as extreme as some, but it's something I have been doing more over the years. If my heel dropped too much I didn't notice it. But honestly its the only thing that make sense to me. Definitely has me thinking about going back to arches or get the pegs that have that drop peg on the back of them.
