Got to see some 410s in the beginning of summer at ransomville speedway. Always great to watch in person.
My friend was showing off his vintage sprint car at Fremont speedway here in Ohio for their Hall of Fame race. The Wife and I sent to the race. While taking with him he says do you remember Les Mintz? Yeah I remember him from this one track I used to go to. A few seconds go by and he grabs Les as he is walking by. Its like holy crap dude its been eons. We chat a bit and he says come to the pits and stop by our trailer and meet my son who races a 410.
Luckily the Wife and I had purchased pit passes so we check out the pits. WOW we spent a good hour bending his ear all about the car. He explained everything about the inner workings of it. He even had a soft ice cream machine in their trailer. SICK !!!
The races were should I say inspiring. I would love to race them but at 65 it might not be possible.
BUT Fremont does have a sprint car school. its a most do hopefully in the fall.

Sprint Cars. Brings back memories. Used to go almost weekly to Ascot back in the day. Dean Thompson, Jimmy Oskie, Brad Noffsinger, Ron Shuman, Bubby Jones. So many names. Those were some fun days for sure. Embarrassing but the last sprint car race I went to was the very first race at Perris in 96.

My friend's son is in his second year in a 410. He got his first podium a few weeks ago.
Started in karts, went to midgets and now in this. Kid has got skills behind the wheel as he is moving up into the fast guys zone.
I brought my wife to a race in Skagit, she was giggling for the entire race every time they hit the track. Those cars are nuuuuttttssss

Considering there's a Kraco car stereo banner and that car looks to be a early/mid 80s Gambler, thats serious way-back machine stuff right there. Days of no down-tubes, short spline steel axles, slider-coupler drivelines and spinner nut front axle.

Ascot was the mecca for dirt racing for generations out west. Extremely excited that Calistoga is coming back. Hopefully if you live in NorCal you'll try to make it. Louie Vermeil Classic at the end of the month. There's been a struggle to reopen the facility.
Too many tracks have disappeared over time.
Very astute observation! He has a few small sponsors, but the majority of it comes from Dad (owns a small business) and Grandpa. I hooked them up with another friend of mine that is buying them some tires and such. As you know, every little bit helps.
They got caught up in a couple big ones earlier this year. Wings, suspension, wheels and frames are not inexpensive to swap out a few weeks in a row!
They are not wealthy people, just humble, hard working folks who have a passion for racing. They could have started him in a 305 sprint, but chose to dive into the deep end.
There is a big All-Star show tonight. Lot's of the Midwest fast guys will be there and it will be a test to make it into the A main. This is the kind of event that he will gain knowledge from and gauge his progression going fast and turning left. Last year, his Dad had him run the bottom and learn the car. This year he is up on the cushion and pushing it.
Awesome to hear. The move straight to 410s is fine if he had midget miles behind him already. IMHO the beauty of the 410 world is you dont hafta wind 'em as tight and get more time before freshen ups. The top ASCS 360s are pushing the limits of modern metallurgy to squeeze what they can outta the humble SBC punched 60 over. Further, the 305 world can be crazy expensive also, I dont care who says otherwise. Hell, what the local-yocal bomber and hobby stock guys are spending is outrageous IMHO.
Best of luck to the young lad, hope he has a good night. I was THRILLED when that 18 year old kid beat Schatz, Swindell and the rest at Knoxville. Its so refreshing to see really young talent taking on, and beating the old farts. If I hafta hear crabby Sammy whine one more time I think I will hurl.

It’s on my bucket list to go to one of these races. I wish we had a series in the Atlanta area. These guys make Nascar look lame.

Bayston out of Meyers car doesn't surprise me, Spencer reminds me of a rider a that did awesome on 85's but had a hard time on big bikes. Apples to oranges but you get the idea.
And the car i hotlapped and wrenched on had a slider coupler ... gawd I'm old.
Ditto that on the 'old'. LOL When I was racing my old Gambler in '04, I originally still had the old driveline in it. The bearing was shot and you had to rock it back and forth a LOT to get it engage, so I called Hendersonville and they sold me a replacement bearing! You can see it in this pic between the torque ball and main tube on the floor. (the lever and linkage isnt put back on the tube yet in that picture) Those old torque balls were HEAVY AF.
Later on I really wanted to have long splines (way easier for offset changes using spacers) so I put in a Winters Pro Eliminator with DMI driveline. (from Smileys) Mega lightweight stuff compared to the ole antiques I had.
Funny you mention the money people spend in the 305's. That's exactly why he chose to put the kid into a 410. He told me, "If we're going to break the bank racing, better to do it in a 410 than waste it all in a 305" lol.
Tonight, they missed the setup in qualifying and were a half second slower than in hot laps. Recipe for a bad seed in the heat.
Changed stagger and gearing but started toward the rear in an 8 lap heat. Made it to the B main and then finished 3rd, transferring to the A.
Started 22nd in the A for a 35 lap Main. Worked up to 14th in a fast crowd, kept it together and learned a lot doing so. I watched him changing some lines in 1 and 2 mid race and he was figuring it out.
It's been balls hot and no rain around here for weeks so the track was like concrete. We siped the rears for the feature and it helped a bit. Running a tire groover in 94 degree ambient temps took me back to the old days around 1986 working on a friend's late model car. Nothing like laying in the dirt and gravel changing spur gears with burning gear lube running down your arms!

Okay I had to LOL for real at your quick change waterfall allusion. Been there my friend. When I got the new Winters I also got the fancy wrench and pan for gear changes. Yeah, I homeboy'd it and used a plain ole AutoZone plastic oil change tub in the old days - the newer aluminum pans got a nice tray for the gears to drain out on.
Dont forget, "Big gear on top"! Dont ask me why I always make sure to say that phrase to myself before putting the cover back on.............. 🤭
Sounds like a really good night for ya'll. Congrats to the young wheel man. Any night that you load up and the car is still rolling on all 4 is a good night to me. :-)
Now you got me really curious what you guys use on dry slick.
What bars you got on the corners? Shocks? Did you tie down the LR ?
Do you you use different blocks on dry slick and change ride height?

Im showing my ignorance as I have no idea what gear a 410 would use out back. Heavy or dry. 360s we wound them really tight most of the time so Im sure its a bit different in 410s.
Wow, what a fun night. Showed up early and walked through the pits. I was surprised we were damn near the only fans milling about the pits. Talked to a lot of the teams/crew. None of them were bothered by our newbie questions and we’re joking around with us right off the bat. I’ve been to lots of different kinds races and events, I don’t remember a more welcoming and down to earth crew. Things got interesting after the pits. We grabbed some food and were sitting at a table eating just chilling out killing time. All of a sudden I felt something slam into my left shoulder, I looked up from my plate to wtf hit me, I thought was a bird or a frisbee maybe, when I looked up my buddy had blood pouring off his face all over his shirt, then a guy comes running over saying I’m sorry I’m sorry it was a malfunction. Turns out one of the production guys drones got away from him, smashed into my buddies face, and then kept going and bounced off my shoulder. His face got propellered up pretty good, besides the cuts on his face dripping blood all over his shirt,. It also took a chunk out of his hand. so of course, the and the track workers show up, luckily the slices were nice and clean and he stopped bleeding after about 10 minutes. The track workers were obviously concerned about legal issues this might bring, luckily for them it didn’t hit a kid, my buddy who ain’t that good looking anyway was very understanding. When it was all said and done, we all got free hoodies, and he got to ride around in the pace car. Thank god it hit our dumb asses and not a young child, or his eyeballs or deeper cuts that would require staples or stitches. They got off very lucky and they know it. We are all race fans and would never sue a track no matter what, but we all know there’s people out there would seize the moment as a golden opportunity for a payday. After that we were treated to a great night of racing, and a cool story about how we all got free sweatshirts. 😂
By the way, those cars are bad ass. I won’t miss another one if I have an opportunity.

Despite the injury it looks like you had a good night. Next time go ask a push truck if you can hop in for a push.
