KX 125 Aluminium frame sandblasting?

Edited Date/Time 9/5/2025 11:09pm

Hello all,

I will be soon the owner of a KX 125. Big issue is, the frame has been painted black. I’d like to bring it back to its original silver color.

Was thinking of having it sandblasted and then spray painted but was wondering if it’s ok to sandblast and aluminium frame or if the sand is going to damage it.

If you can’t sandblast/vaporblast it, are there some kind of acids to remove the painting/powder coating/anodizing on the frame?

Also, what’s the better way to mask small threads/bearing seats?
Thanks in advance.

Aluminum frame?

Has the engine been put into a newer chassis? If not it will be a steal frame and could look cool if you sandblast it back to raw and powder coat it clear coat.

I don't think Kawasaki ever made an aluminum frame 2-stroke.

It’s just the subframe that is aluminum on the oem KX models

Kawasaki never made an aluminum frame 2 stroke, but never sandblast aluminum. That’s way too course of a media.

I really tought the 03-08 KX 125 frame was Aluminium. If it’s steel then i’m good to go i think. Thanks in advance.

The main frame is steel, but the subframe is aluminum.  I stripped my subframe with aircraft paint stripper, it will not harm aluminum. I just used a scotchbrite pad on it afterwards and it still looks great.

if your trying to get the paint off your steel frame then just have it sandblasted. preferably with a finer grit media like 100 grit aluminum oxide. then paint it with what you choose.  if the frame is currently powder coated then you will need to have it chemically stripped or burned off. you cant sandblast powdercoat off. without destroying the metal basically. plugging the holes you can just put random bolts in there or go online and buy a silicone plug kit designed for that.

Congrats on the KX.  It will be a looker when you are done with it.  Good call ditching the black.
