Worlds collide: transgender gun control

I saw @ML512’s thread about his frustrations on this forum and am not trying to add to them. I come here for two reasons: 1. I love motocross and 2. I live in a liberal bubble and this is my best connection to how people outside of it are thinking.

There is a (currently) 9 page thread that starts by preemptively calling out the libs for coming after guns in response to the Minneapolis shooting. I haven’t sifted through that thread to see how discussion changed when we learned the shooter was trans.

But now the White House is “looking at ways to ban transgender Americans from owning guns”, which is pretty interesting. Are we going to have liberals arguing against gun control and conservatives fighting for it? Or are we all going to align on something? What grounds could this ban stand on? Mental health? Taking certain medications? The clothes you wear in public? How could they target such a narrow band of the population without affecting anyone else?

Even without getting into those details, if there was a law that said “transgender Americans can’t own guns”, would you support it?

Poll

Would you support a ban on transgender Americans owning guns?

I do not think any bonafide American citizen should be banned from owning a Constitutionally protected firearm(s),  unless they have,  themselves, demonstrated legit reasons to disqualify them from that Right.   And the 'reasons' for disqualification must be clearly spelled out and applied equally to all citizens.

No way I can support blanket bans on any demographic.  Rights prevail over feelings and freedom does not guarantee safety.

They have already banned guns on the wrong people. The people inside schools and all other institutions should be able to protect themselves.

I think they are just trolling the libs to make them come out for gun rights. It'll probably work too.

Not all liberals aren’t against gun rights.  I’m sure some are, but a lot of them are just against assault rifles and the ease of getting them.

Why don't you explain to the class how easy it is to get 'assault' weapons

You’re asking the wrong questions. If this administration really cared about the health and safety of the American people they would be using this incident as a springboard to go after the pharmaceutical and insurance industries which both push and profit from transgenderism, as well as the banks.  And big Food for poisoning our food supply with hormone disrupting ingredients which I am sure is at least partly responsible for gender dysphoria. Then they would have to go after environmental shit like how water treatment facilities filter human waste and then pump it back into the public water supply (which is disgusting on so many levels) but their treatments do nothing to filter out hormones from birth control which pass through and wind up back in the water supply to, you guessed it, disrupt natural hormone production and is therefore probably at least partly responsible for gender dysphoria.

Of corse all this would mean going after the international corporate investment firms like Blackrock, vanguard and State Street. Which of course this administration like all other past administrations aren’t going to do. Why? Because they work for these institutions and don’t give a flying fuck about us.

Not coming down on you kbsci because I appreciate your willingness to share your political views but in reality by posting this poll you’re actually playing into and giving strength to the trump administration. This is clearly a ploy to only further divide the American public on very superficial and insignificant issues that trigger strong emotional responses.

Many of my friends have semi auto tactical style rifles. None of them are LE or military. Don’t think it was very hard for them to acquire. I’m sure it varies by state.

Lot of info to digest in that post. 🤪  Wonder who's going to wind up on the banned wagon when the dust settles on this thread lol.

All the reasons you listed are the downfalls of free market capitalism. When it gets this advanced the best ideas don’t win out. Those with the deepest pockets influence the government so they can keep making money. We’ve reached a point were it is stagnating innovation and overlooking the well being of the population.

I'm going to try to take a broad brushstroke here but I think its one of the big questions.

Many people are talking about people with certain mental health issues not being able to buy guns. Some Americans would put trans people into that category. Others would not. How do we move forward?

The "T" in lgbtq is a very hot topic and is going to be for a long time.

the position of pro gun along with cutting funding for healthcare and more specifically mental health is becoming untenable.

But cheesehead is right. We’ve poisoned our food and water supply in the name of capitalism.

Well put👍 . It’s no longer a free market. It’s owned. And every political, social, environmental and economic issue we face today is directly tied to this fact. All of our issues worldwide are symptoms of this same disease.

It’s really just one big pyramid scheme where those at the top benefit off of our labor and our creativity and our gambles. Why should they be entitled to our labor!?

Transgenderism and gun rights are nominal surface issues inconsequential to real change. They serve only to distract and divide.

You couldn't have a legal trans gun ban, but you could have a legal mental disorder gun ban. Problem is that would include alcoholism, phobias, anxiety, etc. etc.

I think there are some societies that have blended capitalism and government much better than we have. Japan for one.   They are extremely innovative, they live long lives, and have a healthy lifestyle (for the most part).  The relationship between society, economy and government is very important.

Wait, so this the "downfall of free market capitalism, " AND "no longer a free market?"

Anyone who uses the word 'assault' when defining any type of firearm instantly exposes their ignorance and should be excused from discussions about the various attributes of rifles.

Half a second he says!   Oh my.

I think trans folks do have mental health issues and so its complicated..Not sure how to make a mental health evaluation part of a background check..I bet a could identify 75% of folks who shouldn’t have guns just by looks only..

The next dem president might declare Christianity a mental illness using the exact same mechanism.

This is yet another example of why trump sucks. He hasn't held a principled view on anything in his entire life and these kinds of instant gratification ideas do more harm than good to actual conservative principles.

If he wanted to push for trans to be viewed as mental illness so people no longer had to self censor to keep their jobs, or so help could be offered to treat the underlying mental illness instead of pretending to validate it, that'd be great, but nah let's just chip away at the second amendment and side with the notion that gun laws have any ability to prevent terrorism. Big brain orange man owning the libs again........

how do you stop those that have been disqulaified from buying guns,  most of the rest of the world do this with a licence system, but i doubt that would go over well in the USA

Females that want to be dudes are just taking testosterone. Must of them are probably on 4 other antidepressants or anti anxiety meds too but it's just testosterone for the transition.

He's probably got no shot of getting this past SCOTUS, but what it will do is create loads of sound bites from people defending the 2nd amendment who just before the Minneapolis shooting were calling for gun control.

I don't like the idea because it won't stop there. Anyone who was on ADHD drugs as a kid might be affected by rules like that.
