Anyway, in the deleted scenes section Brad goes into depth what happened at the end of his career and he wanted to get paid $1M to ride or not at all.

For $1M it was going to be worth "the risk" of riding again because after 10 years, he felt a looming injury was coming because he had had many near misses before with "stingers", etc. and just felt something was amiss. He even goes on to say that a bunch of the top guys in 1982-1983 ended up in wheel chairs or hurt bad where since Jim West no one had been seriously hurt at the top of the sport....Malherbe, Magoo, Bailey, Hansen, etc....

He was offered $750K to ride for Cagiva and develop new bike in 1983 and turned it down.

He now enjoys being able to function, everything works and gets to enjoy his championship, his family, etc.

Don't know if this matters on this thread but it was an opportunity to tell you guys an insider story.

many people don't know or realize just how fast lackey could ride a bike. some say he lost a step to hannah, smith, staten and howerton and a few others by going to the WC's every year. bad brad hung out in the off season in norcal and to get ready relaxing and getting fat and then would start to get serious around christmas and would race a few select GSS races mainly to dial in his honda. i swear i saw him cruise around then pounce when he got the pit board to do so more than once and then not even give a shit bout the next moto. in the late 70's....head to head he was faster than anybody even hannah imho but he only went as fast as he wanted too...or needed too. kinda like dungey is today

Good point.

I agree. But he's earned that attitude and demands certain conditions be met.

I think Reed's problem is that he's won his championships, established himself as one of the greatest SX riders of all time, and is quite possibly the wealthiest motocross racer of all time. Therefore at this point in his career he has the luxury of not needing fat factory contracts and can go racing on his terms and in exactly the way that he wants to.

I agree. All good points. He's at a point in his career and life where he isn't in a fucking rush to push things. If his terms are not met, he can pursue other things. He's very wealthy, at least from what I've heard and read. So why accept conditions that are not ideal for what he thinks he needs to succeed and benefit from?

I don't know him. But I've been left with the impression that Reed could walk away from this two-bit sport tomorrow if he had to, and do it with absolutely no regrets. He's at the age now and achieved so much in the sport that he doesn't need to take shit deals.

Todd, thanks for the update. Great insight and teaser, plan on purchasing both DVD's.

Thanks for the insight as well Bobby. I was lucky enough to see Lackey race at Unadilla in '77 and '79 at the Trans AMA. (Still bummed he didn't show up in '78 as I guess he left Honda that fall and didn't have his Kawi deal yet.) He won in '79 and was the fastest guy (though Hannah was out injured, still think he may have given him a run that day). 18 years later my friends and I attend the SX at the LA Col. and who is sitting right behind us.. Bad Brad. Was totally cool, just there as a fan. Bench raced a bit with him about those races and his title and enjoyed the races. Total class guy. Not to knock any of todays riders (or even Hannah), but could you imagine any of the top guys sitting in the stands at an SX shooting the breeze? (maybe Shorty)

Reed's said himself a few times that motocross is not his life, and that he will be quite happy to walk away when it suits him.

I also find it amusing that people believe that his "opportunities" for a ride for 2011 are running out. I think it should be obvious by now that if one of the factories didn't pick him up already, he has other things planned.

I wasn't aware of the back story but I always felt/thought that Brad had put so much energy into getting that World Championship that once he got there....there really wasn't another rung on the ladder worth the cost. He just wore himself to a nub and was spent. He was always one of my heros. I was trying to attach that old poster of Brad doing a crossup with the sunset behind him but I couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone else remember it, have it? If memory serves he was on a Kawi but it could have been a CZ.

When O'mara signed with Team Kawasaki in the fall of 89 after 3 years at Team Suzuki it was for only the 90 season.......He knew he was spent and wanted to do other things [mountain biking].
When he was gonna come back for the 93 125 MX season for Honda of Troy he said in an interview what I posted above.....

I meant when they both went to Kawasaki, not that the green team wasn't good but Barnett and O'Show were at the end of their rope, they knew it, Kawasaki knew it, but it was their best offer at the time.
