Tariffs are a massive tax increase on us. If you support that, cool that’s fine. Unpopular opinion I’d say but cool. What would you like your extra taxes you’ll be paying to be used on?

Keep your ignorant head in the sand.

You are both equally ignorant and validate each others existence. By continuing to defend your chosen masters you are both bootlickers to the corporate elite which steal your labor and rape you of your humanity.

The irony is that both of your masters are one and the same.

The United States and European Union Reach Massive Trade Deal

MAKING GLOBAL HISTORY: Yesterday, President Donald J. Trump announced a trade deal with the European Union (EU), fundamentally rebalancing the economic relationship between the world’s two largest economies.

The deal marks a generational modernization of the transatlantic alliance and will provide Americans with unprecedented levels of market access to the European Union.
The deal bolsters America’s economy and manufacturing capabilities. The EU will purchase $750 billion in U.S. energy and make new investments of $600 billion in the United States, all by 2028.
Through decisive leadership and an unyielding commitment to American workers, President Trump has delivered yet another agreement that positions the United States as the world’s preeminent destination for investment, innovation, and advanced manufacturing.

This is pretty good news, though they aren't paying 1.35T. They are moving away from Russian energy ($750billion), which they were already doing but good for us to get this business. On the Tariff side, it is US consumers who foot the bill there.

They claim to invest $600B into the US under a non-binding political commitment. So this part is by no means set in stone, it is probably an appeasement at best. And will very likely not hold water. I hope we hold them to this.

That said, the EU is really not in the best position right now, so I'd hope we get the better end of the stick here.

The $750B in energy from us is great to see. We will see a big increase in import taxes as well - which will help offset some of our other projected costs for sure.

The US Consumer doesn't win in this deal, however. The number is less than originally threatened by The Donfather (15%) which is good, but we will see cost of goods go up. It may hurt the EU as US companies look to source things elsewhere to not get dinged by this.

It's a bold move Cotton, albeit a less bold move. Lets see how it plays out.

EDIT - 10 points to The Donfather in the Donny vs Vladdy tiff. And we benefit. Credit where credit is due.

What will happen if the debt is not addressed?”

Do you actually believe that the Trump budget cuts the national debt?  It doesn’t even reduce the annual deficit, let alone begin to reduce the debt.  It decreases revenue and increases spending. Think about that.

The blanket tariffs applied are nothing more than a tax on the consumers of the goods. If we are going to increase taxes, it would be far better to return to the progressive tax policies of the 50s and 60s than to rely on a regressive tax scheme that trade tariffs create.

Tariffs have their place, but it isn’t being the primary taxation source for a nation, especially a nation like ours. Tariffs should be applied when goods from another country are artificially supported by government subsidies that make for an uneven competition between producers. Think of the squabbles between Boeing and Airbus over the years. The other main reason for tariffs would be to reduce the ‘dumping’ of products at cost or below into a country because of overproduction or reduced domestic demand. This is common with some commodities like lumber, grain, and produce goods.

Just to be clear, nothing about the new budget helps reduce either the deficit or the debt. If you are supporting it because you believe that to be true, I think that you need to go beyond a sensational headline and do more actual reading. Maybe something other than Newsmax…..!

I don’t know all the big beaut bill does, but that entire reply sounds like a complete NYT slanted report.

So what do you think he should do differently? What has your side (Dems or Reps) offered as an alternative? What is it exactly that Trump put in the bill that raises debt? Also, wasn’t there some tax cuts for like OT and tips and such?

Either way, what did NYT or (Dems) say he should’ve done differently?

Also, I’m pretty sure the purpose of the tariffs was not to tax consumers (left media slant) but to encourage manufacturing in the US.

Again, Aplman, what would be a better alternative to achieve that?

No way. Remember yesterday you quoted me asking if if knew what I was saying was already in the Bible? Or something along those lines.  All that stuff is gone. I’m just bummed. I thought we were having a good conversation.

Both of those can be true at the same time. It might encourage US manufacturing but it is a tax on consumers.

No worries. They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. And I’ll continue to do what I do…which is…

Hold up, you are getting your information from random instagram accounts like this and you think that the New York Times has credibility issues?  Really?

IMG 7704.jpeg?VersionId=QDpV9LPAzMpFBM

What I think should be done differently is that if you are going to continue to spend at higher levels, like the president’s budget calls for, then you don’t enact tax cuts that increase the deficit and debt even more.

You asked a question about what to do with the debt and directly inferred that Trump was the one who will reduce it, but you can’t/won’t articulate how that could/would happen.

Do you know when the deficits have actually went down over the last 45 years?  It’s really only occurred under 2 administrations……

I think that we need to return to a taxation policy that mimics what we had during the 50s and early 60s. I think that income earned from labor shouldn’t be taxed at a higher rate than income based on capital gains. I think that there shouldn’t be caps on tax for social security for high earners and that those taxes might should also apply to income derived from any source, not just wages.

I realize that the memes and instagram sources that you like might try to make you believe that the president is trying to reduce the debt. But the truth is, his plans don’t even reduce the deficit, let alone do anything to remotely address the national debt.

What are your sources that indicates the President’s reasoning. Any specifics on what the increases are for? What are the tax cuts for working Americans?

South Korea to invest $350B in US under new Trump trade agreement, tariff rate lowered to 15%
Deal also includes $100B purchase of American energy products

President Trump announced Wednesday that the U.S. and South Korea have reached a comprehensive trade agreement, in which the East Asian country will invest $350 billion in American projects selected by Trump.

South Korea, which has agreed to be "completely open" to trade with the U.S., will now face a reduced tariff of 15% on imported goods — down from the planned 25%, which would have gone into effect on Aug. 1, Trump said.

It's not a trade agreement, its an agreement for a framework for a trade agreement.

Bottom line:  nobody can forecast with any degree of certainty whether these trade & tariff plans will improve US manufacturing or lower debt. It’s uncharted territory and largely verbal agreements that can be rescinded at any time.

The lack of consistency & predictability creates an unstable environment for business decision makers.  The EU and SK announcements, if enacted, will take 1-2 years before the “real” long term impacts are known.  Until then, US consumers will foot the short term tariff bill while exporters search for new markets due to the overnight increase in the cost of their products.

No one should be jumping for joy or clutching their pearls.

Well, yeah, there’s that.  Restrictive trade policies were a spark to the collapse in 1929.  But they bear little resemblance to what’s been negotiated recently. Plus global markets are more reliant on the US than 100 years ago.

It’s not as great as you’d think actually. We are promising to export so much energy that it will cause prices here to skyrocket. Basic supply and demand. If we keep our end of the deal of course. This guy is an oil and energy expert who did not vote for Joe Biden. Other experts are saying the same thing. Less than 10 minutes of your time.

There you are you crazy $&@!#%. You’re pretty informed. Serious question - where do you normally get your news. If there was one news source you look at most, what would it be?
