While I agree Ken R was the most impressive rider at the MXDN. How does he get a free pass to come here and ride at 16? Can a German sign a Legal and binding contract at 16?

Yes, I'm interested about the age rule for SX. Is it different from MX?

Good ! I had not heard. 18 to be a pro was the worst thing to come though the rules as unleaded gas.

I think the AMA was worried about loosing riders to the GPs.

Whatever happened to the bullet point of "home schooling" becoming "home practicing"? Did the revised Florida law change that detriment?

Yeah, I think the Florida thing was repealed or whatever the legalese is on it. DC commented on it on his last podcast.

Yeah I was being facetious.
I remember when it first came about that the age rule was going to go to 18, one of the reasons it was going to be better for the sport was that it would encourage kids to stay in public school instead of home schooling( which was turning into moto practice with a little education thrown in).

This was, IMO, the most important reason for the future of these affected amateurs that the 18 rule was better.

Sure, a younger age limit makes the sport faster, more explosive and more competitive but at the same time, it spits out a lot more unprepared for the real world kids who dont make it in the big leagues.

It was a combination of things, like parental interference, minors entering into contracts, blah, blah...but the big one was the Florida Legislature allowing minor release forms.
and before anyone says "but we don't race in Florida"
DMG has it's HQ in Florida, Daytona is in Florida and if Florida had not contained it, it would have spread.

Thank PeepsSr for taking care of it, he busted his ass lobbying the Florida Legislature, personally, and much of it pro bono

Dave, do you think the home schooling concern will ultimately be a wash regardless of 16 or 18?

The educational issue will always be a concern

Swizcore. I think you're a really smart guy. Do you think the majority of college basketball and football players (22+) are much better off than home school kids?

I know a lot of kids that went on to play baseball in the farm system... Athletes are only educated to the point they want to be.

Honestly, I'd bet the home schooled kids would have an edge, save for some mild social awkwardness. Smile

He already holds an FIM license. He didn't need the rule change.

There are a lot of stupid kids out there that are fast. The ones that have stupid parents are the ones at risk. Very few make any money in this sport. Speed is only one factor. One injury and your done. Education of your children is the first priority,to prepare them for life. Jlaw is a prime example, very fast but when he fills out his job application at wal-mart,some one will have to spell his name for him. Most parents that have the money to support their kid racing at the am level to compete with the top riders would be better off to invest the money, and let it ride for their kids retirement. And just let them be local fast guys, because that's all they will be anyway. Except idiots compared to normal people.

What does it matter? The kids chasing the dream through the amatuer ranks are already working like pros and getting hurt like pros. If they have the speed, why not let them race pro? They could find out if they have it or not, then back out earlier if they dont. Keeping them in the am. ranks just takes away two years of income.

I'm not saying its smart, my point is they are already riding full time anyhow. Why have them travel across the country doing the amat. sprint lap deal?

A German can sign a legal contract from 18y on. So contracts with Ken have to be signed by his parents

Does it really make a difference? Its not like a stick or ball sport where a 16 year old can get a college education out of his talent and when he/she realizes that they are not going to make a living out of the sport(99.98% of them) at least they will have an education to fall back on. Motocross will continue to spit out 19-21 yr old kids who are washed up within the industry where their talent and future was focused with minimal life and educational skills to fall back on regardless of the age being 18 or 16.

I agree andd I also think the 18 yr old rule won't change that fact. Even if they kept the rule at 18 amateur racers will still home school. The only difference imo would be allot of kids would end up going to the GPs at 15.

Why does a kid have to be washed up at 19? He may not make it as a motocrosser, but he has his entire life ahead of him. I was a joke in high school and went to college on my own nickle two years after high school. College was a lot easier than swinging a shovel.

So we're wanting NCAA motocross?

Let them race at 16, some people make it seem like once your 18 you can't go back to school.

Race, chase your dream for three or four years if you don't make it get a GED and then take some classes at the local community collage, make straight A's and then transfer to a real collage.

You could still have a good degree by the time your 24 or 25. Probably going to do better and learn more because you are older and more mature. You'll still have he next 40 years to work a real job instead of the next 43 like the rest of us.

Whether it was 16 or 18, they would still be dropping out of middle school to be home schooled anyway.

A community collage is a good idea.
Or even a real collage

Your assumption is that if it weren't for moto they would be rocket scientists?

When my kids were little, I would get nauseated listening to parents about their gifted kid. Now that they are teenagers we seem to have lowered our expectations. Maybe junior won't be elvis/einstein/ricky
