Jeff Ward is posting on Instagram with a pic showing 105 degrees back in the day and saying he was "happy to suffer in it."

Jeff Ward also raced against like 7 dudes who even actually trained and the other 33 were weekend warriors.

The pace and intensity back then was just not on the level it is now.

Sorry, not sorry.

Dude, was it harder than riding an air-cooled 500 in triple digits at Carlsbad for 45 minutes?

I was at Troy in '97. Yesterday was toasty but far from unbearable.

That was ungodly hot.
And Emig came out in black in the second moto. Wink

I'm the same age as Wardy and I walked uphill in the snow going to and from school....Just because Wardy survived it doesn't make it safe for everyone go back and look at the results of that race and see how many dropped out and DNF

Edit : Lets also not forget that in Wardy's time they also had well over double the time between motos to recover....

I was at the 1991 500cc USGP at Glen Helen.  105F with 77% humidity.  2 each 45 min. + 2 lap motos.   I wasn't at Hangtown a few days ago but I doubt it was any hotter than this race.  No moto's were cut short, no AC to be seem, no ice tubs, just Jeff Ward sitting in a lawn chair in front of a fan with an ice bag around his neck between motos.    These guys were animals!!

I wish riders were allowed to rehydrate with an IV in between motos. It would really help the rider and it would be more safe.

I get that back in the day they raced longer motos and probably equally hot and humid weather, but if you can improve rider safety without having to change the on track part of the race, it seems silly not to.

Who is going to administer the IV for the guys that can't afford to bring a nurse?

Valid question.

I wonder if they could partner with some local nursing schools or volunteer fire departments (that may have actual paramedics) and either pay them a reasonable stipend or donate to their fire district.

Someone smarter than me (almost anyone) can figure out the details but I sure wish that Lichtle would have been given fluids after both motos…..

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, they could hire an IV rehydration company to handle the IV's they are overseen by DR's and run by RN's. Go to any outdoor music festivals in the heat of the summer and you will see one set up. They will administer over 1000 IV's over two days so they could easily handle riders and team members.

Westins a bad dude, but for the people that complain about shortening mud races, and in this case, hot races, they need to get with the times

Safety should be a priority, and is it life changing to remove some time off of a race?

Right. This isnt the hill to die on, crying about shortening the motos 3 laps. We get it. All the badasses on FB and Instagram tough out their 4 lap C class vet motos in brutal heat. The pros are clearly not as tough as you. Lets move on

Nobody is saying they could do better. Is your understanding so simplistic you can't grasp that? Nobody can comment on the sport unless they can do better than professional athletes trained from birth to perform at the highest level in motocross?

My post was inspired by the fact that heat was covered in this race as if it was the first time it was freaking hot while people raced dirt bikes. We all know the truth on that one. Literally 80% of the coverage was the heat, when we all know it's been pretty much this hot since Larry Maiers was covering the races (actually long before). 😄

It got silly with the cooling vests and the broadcast team acting like this was the first race in the heat. It was ridiculous.

Hangtown HeatWow, it was hotter than it's ever been and a high risk of heat stroke. I'm glad they cut motos, and thank you to commentators for pointing out the temperature

Yes, it was hot. But cutting motos? Hasn't it always been hot? How different is it now? IDK

This is BS. Bob Hannah used to race in triple digits in cotton jerseys from a box van and didn't even use AC in hotel rooms to prepare. And GP riders ride in heat for 45 minutes
