According to a couple of key industry insiders and Vital members I have to wonder what is KTM thinking hiring RD?

You all know we have one of the GxproOAT that post really important incites that us non-x-pros could never fathom...then we have the greatest man-friend, x-pro wrench, turned National-moto-Enquirer have declared that RD is mediocre at his job.

With this kind of incite, I have to wonder why on earth KTM would hire the guy.

Is KTM making a huge mistake?

lmao, who said they thought he was mediocre at his job? Suzuki's desire for a one year contract is clearly a money issue. They don't want to get caught with their pants down is Suzuki Japan pulls the plug on US Suzuki's budget.

What do you prefer, a record that speaks for itself or people skills?

This is just redonkulous.

it's just a question based on the valuable in sites ( Wink ) of key Vital members.

If it is a mistake for KTM it won't be near as bad as the one Suzuki made not doing what it took to keep him.

I've heard stories of riders being told by Roger that they had the ride on his team, only to get a call a couple hours later to say that they didn't. From what Reed said on Matthes' show, Roger's strengths are in machining parts for the bike and other various bike setup things, not in what we think of as being a "team manager".

If you listen to Reed on Matthes podcast from Monday night, he pretty much said the same thing.

I don't necessarily think so. Success is still success, and Roger's been successful for a long time. Good leaders will know their own strengths and shortcomings and will gather people around them that can complement their own skills.

If you take the view that his more recent success at Suzuki was mainly due to the quality of the riders rather than whatever Roger brings, then all takes is for KTM to hire a couple of top 5 riders and that problem will be solved.

If you take the view that Roger mainly brings unmatched technical and set up knowledge, then maybe that's what KTM were looking for. After all, they've suffered for a long time in the US on the perception that their bikes weren't as good for MX/SX as the Japanese bikes, and next year they'll be campaigning a relatively new machine.

Any way you cut it, I think it's stil a good move.

The criticism people are citing here is flying at 5,000 feet stuff. Much of what makes a team manager valuable to a company flies at 50,000 feet.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether RD is great at the happy-horseshit back-slapping stuff. That's never been his style, right back to running Honda and bringing rivals together to create an edge on the team. So, look at the record, and how it's worked when he has been able to retain focused talent (which he's been as good as anyone at) and create a no-nonsense environment for them to perform.

It's just a different style. I think only KTM gets to decide whether it's a mistake in the sense of whether that style is consistent with the way they want to pursue their goals.

Well said, Mike. Seems RD was insightful enough to bring in that other RD, who has done pretty well so far. And RC, and CR, and MA, and MC, etc. Maybe it's all just been good luck? If so, I'd like to follow him around the casino a time or two. I think most ppl missed your original point though, txm...//TJ

Yup. All, those championships as a racer, championships as a team manager and MXoN victories are a fluke. The guy's a bum.

DAMMIT!!

Adj. 1. insightful - exhibiting insight or clear and deep perception; "an insightful parent"; "the chapter is insightful and suggestive of new perspectives"-R.C.Angell
perceptive - having the ability to perceive or understand; keen in discernment; "a perceptive eye"; "a perceptive observation"

9/8/2010 9:57am Edited Date/Time 9/8/2010 9:58am
former riders:
Dungey: wins 2 titles in his first big bike year+in and outdoor titles in the 250 class, coming from B class.
Mike Alessi: biggest threat to JS7 outdoors when on Suzuki.
Reed: one year on Suzuki, first outdoor title.
Stroupe: first time he was a title contender was on Suzuki.
Byrne: after injuries, still a top 3 guy outdoor while on Suzuki.
RC: NFM.

Must be a bad manager.

If MA800 is a contender next year, you will all be on his balls. Must be, because when a person does good, there's never anything about it on here.

They say Joe Torre is a great manager. Take a look at his record before coming to the Yanks and how has he done since he left? .

Very good point: It's the combination of EVERYONE in the "front-office" and the quality of the players.

What a concept.
