Both the Indy and Springfield Mile! Bill Werner bought a bunch of 650 Ninja parts from ebay, put them all together with some good suspension components, $2000 in motor work, put Bryan Smith on it and smoked the $25,000 750cc Harleys at their own game. He has less that $7000 invested in the bike.

Terry, that is impressive! Who built the frame? Fuckin love dirt trakc. Too bad it fell apart in western canada. Used to be a big deal in manitoba back in the day. I rode it and loved it. Wish it was still around.

What's ironic about that is that Bill Werner got famous wrenching for guys like Jay Springsteen and Scott Parker when they rode for Harley. Bill Werner is a legend. Congrats to him and Bryan.

STOCK frame on the bike that Smith rode, but he had a frame built for the other.

Whats even more ironic Dan is that Springer is the development rider for the project!

Cool story, great looking bike. The picture on that page you link to is awesome.

After reading the article, I'm pretty sure the only thing holding me back in motocross is the lack of FLUIDYNE radiators!

The list of companies that rule changes chased away is long. Honda, Ducati, Suzuki. This Kawi effort is not factory supported as far as I know but I'm sure the Harley guys will have something to say about it.

With Werner building competitive race bikes at less than half the cost, he is singlehandedly making the sport way more affordable for the average racers. Isn't that what we are all talking about in MX? The need to make things more affordable? I applaud Mr Werner on his vision and foresight. Too bad they'll probably shut him down.

very cool.



i was groomed for flat track but went moto at 12... after "growing up" i bought a crf450, turned it into a flat tracker and have enjoyed some success in the local pro class.



I think the cost factor is a great point, but there is no way the bike is on the line for less than $11 -12k minimum. $7k is a stretch, i don't care what Bill says... those wheels are worth $2k.

I wasn't tryin to be a smart ass... just that for the average guy to read that and think it is possible is a farce. But yeah, i would agree... half the price of a Harley.

I didn't think it had anything to do with rule changes when Suzuki backed out. I think it had to do with ROI and the economy taking a shit. That was part of Pat's budget to go first I thought.

Not saying that the rules haven't been tweaked to make things tougher for them though.

I'm sure you are right...to a point. It was more than obvious the once Suzuki started doing well in flat track, the AMA just kept making it harder and harder for anyone but Harley. It happened with Honda and it happened with Ducati.
