AMA Petition Update

Finally made it back from a couple of days off. As you well know, the petition is up to 2003 signatures. I will have a follow up proposal this week and will share it with everyone here.

Apparently, the word of the petition is spreading. Word has it that Davey Coombs is definitely not for it and has said that there is no way this will happen, and that no one in the pro pits wants the two strokes back. But this is only rumor about the pro pits, since several of the pro mechanics and riders ride two strokes and want to see this succeed. It was also rumored that James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael were going to sign it.

Well, I guess its no surprise that DC wouldn't be for it. We knew this would be a fight. Either way, the mission is still the same. The petition is only going to go up and the economy and the race team budgets will continue to go down. This will win out eventually.

I should have some news and the follow up this week. Here's the link:

I'm a bit confused. As I understand it AMA amateur rules already allow equal capacity two strokes to compete. This petition is for AMA Pro Racing, yet you say "It's not for the pro riders anyway".

So who is it for?

I think he means factory riders or factory backed teams.....not just "pros"

Not for pros? Its a petition for Pro Motocross and SX? Two strokes are already legal in the ams? How is it not for pros.

Well, Its not for factory pros. They will ride what they are told to. It's basically to help the privateer the most and smaller teams that don't have a large budget. Slight mistype. Good catch.

Yeah, the amatuer rules already allow equal displacements regardless of engine, bu tthe pro racing rule book only allows up to 125cc 2-stroke in the 250F class and 250cc 2-stroke in the 450F class.

I figured as much so is it basically a petition for big bore two strokes to be eligible? Because other than ktm the petition doesnt seem to apply to any bike but the ktm 150 and 300xc? Because if I'm reading it correctly its for two strokes up to 150cc in the 250 class and up to 301cc in the 450 class?

Yeah, basically. The 2-strokes simply can't compete with the more powerful 4-strokes. This change is small enough to give the 2-stroke somewhat of a chance, before it is eradicated completely.

Right my only concern is that the rulebook atleast when i read it last states that big bores are illegal so even if this petition works, will you be able to ride a big bore yz or rm or will you have to ride a stock ktm 150/300?

Big bores will be allowed if it goes through, they just may not be able to be stroked or have a stroker crank. I am proposing that they allow big bores without a stroked motor. A YZ144, YZ285, or modified KTM300 should be enough to battle the 4-strokes without a stroker motor. (I had to ask what a stroker motor consisted of).

Wishful thinking! If the guys in charge don't won't it, no matter how many petitions you do or how many signatures you get, its not gonna change anything! But hey, its your time to waste, so keep doing what you feel like you need to do! You have amateur racing CC for CC, where YOU and 99.99 percent of this board will race or ride. Thats not enough for you. KTM and several other manufacturers still make and produce new 2 strokes.



What it boils down to is you won't be satisfied until they are winning and the 4 stroke gone.

Say someone over at the 4 stroke board gets a petition going to KEEP 2 stroke from returning......I'm almost POSITIVE they'd get more than 2003 signatures!

well with ktm making a bolt on 300 kit for the 250sx it should be allowed as its factory offering.. now if we could get them to lower the homologation rules so AJ's bikes coud be legal then they could have the 300 from service and be within the rules... Evil

I don't care about two stroke or four stroke. They are both a blast to ride and both have advantages and disadvantages, but I think it should be that two strokes should be able to be competitive in the pro class, due to the fact they are much cheaper to maintain and could help out the privateers and rookies trying to make to make a name for themselves. The amount of money it takes to race the nationals is ridiculous and something like cheaper maintenance and bikes could help alot of kids out. Honestly i think they would still be at a huge disadvantage but they should have the option available. But maybe instead of a rule change maybe a 125 support class would be more beneficial.

A 125/150 support class would be great , and it could run at the rounds there is no WML race . I signed the petition but honestly I really don't think it would have any impact at the pro level . Just my opinion .
