Replacing Races For New Triple Clamps?

Edited Date/Time 4/24/2025 10:05am

Hey guys, Just ordered some new clamps and the instructions want me to install new races. Seems like a pain especially considering the bike is brand new. Is replacing the races standard procedure when intalling aftermarket clamps?

I have not replaced races with new triple clamps? What brand triple clamps?

Ride Engineering, they use an all balls bearing on the clamp. they recommended switching the races.

Interesting. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in. I have seen what you are talking about, but never experienced needing to do new races.

Ride clamps use All Ballz bearings to save on costs, and they're a different size than stock. You must change the races to use them, or upgrade them to an OEM bearing.

This is why we only use high quality OEM bearings on our products!

If you're this far in, bike all ripped apart and clamps removed, swapping the races in minor in the grand scheme of things.

Well, yes.

But a company putting on Non std bearings, to save costs, Without the commensurate 'races' , that they leave to their customers to acquire,  is , to me, not confidence inspiring in said company.

With regards to the 'races' referred to : are they , what I'll call, the 'female' part of a  Tapered bearing, or, is the Entire Bearing supplied with the clamps, of such a different OD or Depth (I assume) that it has to have an additional insert / 'race' fitted to enable use of the different bearing?

Whatever it is, it really seems dodgy to me, to Not use the std Sized bearings.

If your new bearing race/cup and the one in your chassis is the same spec, you’ve got good grease maintenance habits and there is no sign of wear or damage to the already installed race then it makes 0 sense to change it.

As mentioned by Luxon, the all-balls bearings are a different spec to stock so in this case you have to change the race/cup or the bearing on the clamp. In your position I’d change the bearing on the clamp as it keeps everything the same spec as stock.

They did supply the races, it may be a supply issue due to it being a triumph not sure.  I was just a little concerned as I’ve never had to swap races out before so it wasn’t something I wanted to do. However, I was able to get the old ones removed. Just will suck again if I have to switch back to the oem ones to sell the thing.

Best thing to do would’ve been to either buy a new oem bearing and remove the shit all balls. Or press the bearing off oem stem, press bearing off aftermarket stem, and install oem bearing onto aftermarket stem.

Yes that's normal I have ride engineering 22 mm offset triple clamps for my 23 KX 450 and I replaced the races and it gives instructions to do so basically you just punch it out with a long punch and Hammer then use your old bearing turned upside down two Hammer the new race and evenly tap it to the bottoms out you'll hear the pitch of the hammer blow change once it's bottomed but yes that's normal I had to do the same thing with mine no big deal and pretty easy to do

Races are super easy to manage with the right tools. Just do it.

As far as the All Balls vs OEM bearings, I've ran the OEM top and left the All Balls lower on a couple sets of RE clamps. Top bearing/race always goes bad for me first anyway, regardless of brand. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I just ended up pressing the all balls bearing off and replaced it with the OEM one Buddy of mine owns a machine shop so we were able to press them out no problem. Used a combination of the old race/pvc pipe to tap the new bearing on. However I do wish they would have advertised this rather than me ordering them thinking they were just going to bolt up.
