Yes, the bar needs to be cut if you want the grips to be an equal distance from the centerline of the bike.

Whether or not you can tell I guess depends on how sensitive you are to cockpit geometry.  Most folks probably wouldn't notice IMO.

I never cut the bars with the Pro Taper Twister and couldn't tell if there was a difference.  I don't even think removing the bar was part of the instructions....could be wrong.

Use a pipe cutter

Cut 1/2" off the bar end on the throttle side or move the whole handlebar 1/4" to the clutch side. (Off center in the triple clamp.)

EDIT: I just realized the off-center hack would make your left side a little flexier than the right side. Maybe @Luxon MX  Billy can chime in and let us know if 1/4" matters in that case.

Buy a lock-on grip for the left side, and move it 1/2" to the left!

I would follow the instructions, cut the right amount off the throttle side, and move on!

It's surprising how much cutting bars even just 10 mm can feel. I've never tried running bars offset to one side, but I bet it would be noticeable to many people, and not in a good way. Not so much from a flex difference, but just a positioning difference.

Most can feel when a bar is bent as everything just feels off. This would be similar or worse.

my god the amount of absolute hack job people in this thread is baffling. Follow the instructions and cut the bar, if you can ride a dirt bike you can cut 1/2" off a handle bar. If you cant, you should sell the bike.

It will break the moment you lean it on something.

Just cut the bar with a pipe cutter. It will take 15 seconds.

I'm guessing the bearing adds the 1/2" back, so it's not going to change anything length wise.

I must be missing something.

You're right; I didn't even consider the bar bend.

You would be amazed how many top pros running that throttle tube for YEARS and didn’t know you were supposed to cut the bar, because they didn’t read the instructions lol Teams too!!

Yep, have seen it myself first hand.  That's exactly why I said above some may notice, and others not - depends on how 'in touch' you are with cockpit geometry.  Some riders just aren't - even very advanced riders.

You are correct. The bearing outer ring face sits flush with the bar end. The bearing is 12mm wide + a few mm of the tube end (or 1/2” for you yanks).

If you wanted to actually narrow the bars by 1/2” then you would need to cut the throttle tube side by a full inch. GNCC guys do this on account of the trees.

^ *3/4 inch though, right? And 1/4 on the clutch side, otherwise we're back to the same old off-center problem.
