Bumper racks for hauling the bike?

Who uses one? Got some links?

Able to use one on a compact car like an Accord or Camry? Need to add air shocks to adjust for the added weight in back?

Just getting a little tired of hauling out the trailer ( with full size wheels ).

A good friend used to use one on the back of his SUV... kind of rickety, but the bike stayed on... I'd keep the trailer! I want to say it attached to the tow hitch.

All that weight behind the rear of my CR-V lightens the steering quite a bit, but still gets the job done. Not sure an Accord or Camry would have the ground clearance to make it work.



My hitch rack is for sale, if you're interested. I want to get one of these ridiculously overpriced single-rail trailers:

My buddy bought one that holds two bikes for his pacifica and had to make a riser because it sat too low to the ground but the weight of it with two bikes was too much weight for the tow hitch to carry. So before you need to see how much your hitch will hold. You are probably better off keeping the trailer.

Make sure you can replace the hydraulic jack if/when it goes out... mine did after a while.

I'm not planning on getting rid of the trailer as my street bike is most likely too much for any bumper rack ... but I'd like to try one for a 250 smoker.

Are there any DMV rules on this or is it just a matter of what weight the hitch maker or rack maker says their unit can handle?

I was assuming one would want some sort of adjustable air shock or something in back to adjust the ride?

No DMV rules that I'm aware of. Check your vehicle's recommended tongue weight. Mine is under the hitch maker's recommended weight, but way over the vehicle's recommendation.

i use the riser and a double rail on my ford windstar......it is to much with 2 full size bikes but i carry my 450 and a 110 and it is fine!

I have a motojack rack, pretty much identical to the one in the photo above. Bought it on craigslist for about $100 and Iove it.

Use it on my Ford F150 with a camper shell, all gear, tools, etc. locked up and dry. Have even hauled my BRP (XR600) on it, no problem. I use a couple of tie downs for extra security and to keep the front wheel cocked at an angle. For long trips I use a cargo trailer, but for day trips or overnight, the rack is great. You can even use it as a work stand.

I did some grinding on mine because the bike is way far away from the car giving to much leverage on the hitch. I also took the part that that I deleted and rebuild it so the bike now leans on the rack construction and put the tie downs to the roof of the car reducing some weight and pressure on the hitch and reduce any wobbling. This is the setup we often use in Europe and I have this on my Wolkswagen Fox in Sweden with NO PROBLEMS. I have been carrying bikes like this for a decade and my belief is to use the rails of the roof as stabilizer and reduce stress on the frame and hitch of the car. My tie downs are crap though and I will buy better ones that reduce any risk from dropping or creating any slack.

I have the same exact one. It works really good. My only complaint is dropping the inside tie down and trying to hold the bike and fetch it.

I am really surprised the cops have not started ticketing people with motorcycle racks and bicycle racks on the back of their vehicle.
Clearly the plate is not viewable and the lighting system is not visible on the vehicle.
Im am sure it is comming though.

Good point. I had a couple of my mtb bikes loaded onto a trunk rack and put a piece of cardboard between them so they wouldn't rub on each other ... and then realized you couldn't see the brake lights anymore.

Anyone been warned or ticketed on this? Shite, if you have to add another lic plate and brake/turn lights to the bumper rack it kinda defeats the purpose of it all being a simple roll on / roll off.

I brought this all up because last weekend I saw a Camry with a 250F loaded onto the back with a bumper rack of some sort. The guy said he's never had any problems.

I think a lot of people have more money in their bike than their hauler. $800 pickup, $6000 bike is not out of the ordinary around here. It's called getting your priorities straight!!!

Maybe it's your anxiety talking? Me and some friends have used racks for about 10 years. Imagine the amount of hours on the highway without any problems. If you have some feeling of logic it's really no problem.

What I know though is that some other people have experience bikes tipping on their trailers though, luckily no one landed on the ground while driving.

So your point?
