The VA gave me hearing aides. I’ve got Tinnitus from, “Guns, Planes, Bombs” and probably some loud exhaust. High Frequency loss from the same. Low Frequency from some hereditary anomaly called Deer Syndrome.

Being able to hear again is amazing. My buddy, “they must work because you don’t talk as loud”. Probably because I can hear myself. They also cancel out the ringing in my ears.

Answering my phone on them is still strange.

The first day I got my hearing aids, I got in my truck and when I started it, I heard noises I had never heard before.

On iPhone if you go to Setting>Accessibility>Hearing Devices you can sync your phone with your hearing aid and change some settings to help with calls and hearing aids. Android may have something similar.

Didn’t apple just release some air pods that double as hearing aids?

Did you actually get rated for hearing loss? I've always heard that's damn near impossible to get, even for guys who worked on flight decks, or were infantry.

10% hearing loss and 10% tinnitus.

Back in 2008 was when I started noticing T symptoms and hearing degradation. Was 50 so you can do the math, anyway in those 17 years the T has become very severe and hearing loss too due to all the things I should have worn ear protection from. Got my first pair of hearing aids around 2012. Like others have said, the daily noises we take for granted were non existent until I got the aides. Hearing  leaves crunch in the fall and listening to birds became real again. Game changer. Still though if I could rid one it would be my Tinnitus. Rough ride...

I’ll tell you who was responsible for nearly making me deaf on two occasions, KISS. Mother f’ers had their P.A. system turned up to eleven both times I saw them. Holy crap, couldn’t even enjoy the show it was so loud. I was suddenly engulfed in a sonic nightmare of muffled metal that was very similar to the scene from Black Hawk Down where one of the Marines fires his weapon right next to his buddie’s head. F you, KISS sound board guy.

I need to look into some of those sonic ear plugs that protect your hearing but allow you to still hear the music.

To put a deafening book-end to that upbringing,  ole Uncle Ted pummeled my head relentlessly for hours in 2005.  Literally 8' from his PA.   What wa I thinking?  LOL

Hardest part to believe is at 50%, everything after is only worth half. They do everything they can to keep you from getting to 100%.

At 54 years old I am the only one in my family who does not need hearing aids. Dad(now passed), mom, older sisters and brother. I even have a niece that is 7 years younger then me that has them.

Before my dad died I got so used to yelling at him that I would talk loud to anyone that was older then 75 years old. It was just a natural thing to assume anyone that age was deaf. I finally had a guy in his 80's tell me "I can hear you fine you do not have to yell". I didn't even realize I was talking loud till he told me 😐

That’s probably not accurate I woukd think you’d hv more than 10% loss to get hearing aids.  I had a dr apt Tuesday extremely head sick ,  a ton of big injuries & pain.  Also my rt ear inside it’s constant 24/7 high pinching pain inside.  Dr said it’s nerve damage . And there is no procedure to fix.  Usually a lot of sauna helps my ear.  Not this time. It’s soo hard to ever get sleep.

I’m talking about the VA disability rating system.

I feel extremely lucky to only have the loss that I do. I was a grunge rocker in the '90s and my band played loud! There's definitely some minor ringing in my ears and I only hear up to about 15KHz, but I don't really notice unless I'm paying attention.

I definitely notice sometimes that I can't hear what people are saying if I'm not looking at them. I'm going to call that 1/2 hearing loss and 1/2 attention span, though!

On a related side note, I shaved my ears and trimmed my nose hair this morning. The hair on my head is in a constant decline, only to be sprouting in unwanted locations! 🤣

😁

I wish someone could transplant my ear hair to the bald spot on my head.

Back on topic. Professional mentioned he has nerve damage in his ears and it is permanent. My sister in law has this also. She all of a sudden lost most of her hearing in one ear last year. I guess it got determined that she has nerve damage from having one too many ear infections and that there is nothing they can do about it.

Not really relevant to the topic but she's a nice gal with lots of personality but she makes bad decisions like with her money , men etc. She is a single mother in her early 40's who served in the Marines. She gets 100% disability pay and suffers from PTSD. She's a tough little gal, built like a brick, was a gymnast in highschool and competed in fitness competitions when she was in her 30's. But, she served as a welder in the Marines and one day when she and a couple of her fellow Marines were cutting up something, a pool of gas formed and then exploded, turning her workmate, in the words of my Marine step son, into "pink vapor". The guy who was in charge freaked out and couldn't handle it so my sis in law took charge and called it in. Anyways, I guess she's been having flashbacks and has reached out for help.

I have a very good friend who has hearing aids but refuses tio wear them, it's frustrating having a conversation with him, unless your'e  right in front of him.In a group setting forget it.  He sometimes out on the trail nods like he understood what was said and ends up going the wrong way. Great guy though. Just wish he would wear the hearing aids.

I got blasted by Ted at the "Cat Scratch Fever" show in Dallas.

8th row center. The roadies kept turning down his amp, and he'd just crank it back up.

Ears were ringing for a few days. Not sure if that was the sole cause, because I have been around loud shit all my life, but it was certainly a contributor.

i'm 41 and have always had hearing problems.  one of my biggest issues is wax build-up.  my ear Dr claims he's never had a patient with as much wax as me.  i have to go 2-3 times per year to have them cleaned, sometimes it plugs off completely and i'm deaf for a couple days until i can get in.  it fucking sucks. i clean my ears once or twice a week and still get crazy blockage.  my dad has had hearing aids for about 7 years now and i have no doubt i'll be going down that same road sooner than later.  open restaurants and venues are a nightmare, i can't hear shit just nod and play along with whatever someone is saying.

I have a similar problem, although I have only had a bad wax impaction once.

Do you use ear drops? They really help to dissolve the excess if you use them regularly.

i use baby oil or virgin oil every now and then. i plug my ears off with a cotton-ball to keep it in there and to be honest i don't know if it helps or not but DR tells me to keep doing it.  last year the blockage was so solid he had to break it apart with a tool before he could extract it. he gave it to me and it was like dark orange gravel.

Back in '16 or '17 i went to watch PB at Lorretas and the heat and humidity melted the wax in both ears to the point i was completely deaf for 5 days. it was the worst experience i've had. the sound of the bikes was litterally a droned out buzz. i must have had a major blockage but had just enough of a hole to still hear. the Tennessee climate shit all over that though.
